The secret of Federer's racquet finally revealed!

Seems this never ending debate might finally come to an end. According to some unidentified source at Wilson, All of Roger Federer'r racquets are made from a modified PS 6.0 mold. Roger wanted a larger racquet head from his original 85 sq.in. while trying to maintain ALL the original features of the racquet. Why not use the PS 6.0 95 you may ask? He did not want to and did not like it.

In an effort to satisfy him plus successfully market the PS Tour 90, Wilson modified a PS 6.0 85 mold to include the tapered flanges on the throat, a 90 sq.in. head, and the slight modifications to the PWS shape in order to "make it look" like a Tour 90 to the "untrained eye". Yes, they went through all this trouble just for him. Why has this racquet not been released? Apparently Roger didn't want to for some reason and worked it into his contract.

Also, he's using 80% Graph. 20% Kevlar like the original PS, nothing changed. The weight and balance are the same proportionality as he was using with his PS 85, customized to the new head size.

All his racquets (including the "supposed" nCode that he uses) is actually this racquet, obviously with different paintjobs. He seems to like this racquet very much given that it is the same as his old PS but with a larger head so don't expect him to change. If you're careful take a look a closeup pictures between the old Tour 90 he was "using" and the new nCode he is "using", obviously the same mold looking like the Tour 90 on the head, but like the PS 6.0 on the bottom of the throat and handle.

Hopefully this will clarify some doubts and end this nagging debate about Federer's racquet.

Doesn't really explain the changes in string pattern which have been observed. Seems odd that if he liked a given frame so much he'd then experiment with string patterns. Not sure we'll ever get to the bottom of this one.

The downfall to all these paintjob stories is that Sampras paid Nate 100 grand a year to put an ounce and a half of obviously visible lead on a stock racquet. Tennis companies operate on tight margins, and if product development asked management for "custom molds" or "paint jobs", they woul ROFLOL.
It is the BRAND that consumers know, not the frame. When they're in Target, they buy the Sampras RAK attack and that's what the endorsements are for. We frequenters of these boards(and fellow enthusiasts) are 5% of their sales.

Wilson has a player services department that customizes every racquet, then paints them, for high ranking pros and juniors.

As for Sampras, it was a special situation because the St. Vince's frames played in a very special way, and when Wilson switched manufacturing they could not duplicate something in the environment there. Wilson scoured all stock for racquets made in St. V's. Then customized for Pete with his personal tech.

As a materials engineer I can tell you that sometimes you cannot predict a variable is important until it is gone, and then you often cannot duplicate it again.

I thought about trying to start up a new factory in St. V's, but it is environmentally and cost prohibitive.

If Wilson market this racket, buyers of ncode would buy this anyway. Why not just market genuine stick that roger is using? instead of fooling Federer's fans.

Actually, there's probably some truth to that since the PS 6.0 feels more like a Jack Kramer Autograph wood racquet than any other graphite racquet out on the market. No wonder Sampras wants to start his kid out with a wood racquet, undoubtedly with the aim to transitioning him to his PS 6.0 St. Vincents after he develops all his strokes.

It's not Federer, it's Wilson. Wilson figures that no one would buy it since very few people would be able to actually use it, and they're right. Only the racquet geeks on this board would buy them and that's not nearly enough for them to bother with.

I am a bit confused about all this talk about Fed's racquet. I just looked very closely at Fed's racquet in cnnsi.com tennis web site. He has 16 main and 19 cross strings. I keep hearing his set up w/regards to string pattern was different. Is this so? Also, his racquet throat looks a little longer than my racquets...maybe his handle/grip is a bit smaller. Since he has a one-handed backhand, why would he need a 2 handed size grip?

The spacing of the strings in the middle of the stringbed of his custom racquet are further apart allowing him to genenrate more spin.
