The tournament where it would have been the most impressive for a player to beat all the Big 3?

Nalbandian gets a lot of praise for his Paris 07 run, and rightfully so because he became the only guy ever to beat Fedalovic in one tournament, and even though it’s crazy impressive, there were many tournaments later on where the Big 3 combined played on a much higher level, making it near impossible for a mere mortal to go through all of them.

what would be the tournament to answer the question? RG 2011 IMO.

peak Djokovic on the longest winning streak of his career, Fed displaying one of the highest levels on clay in his career to put down that version of Djokovic and Nadal waiting in the final.. well, it sure wasn’t his best RG in terms of level of play but it’s still a prime Nadal on clay who went on to win the tournament.

what’s your take?

As I started reading I immediately thought RG 2011. No one other than the big 3 should have even showed up. That was the No F’ing Chance tourney.

Djoker in one of his peaks.
Fed at a level where he managed to upset Djoker.
And the Clay GOAT awaiting in the final.

No one on the planet was winning that thing other than Rafa or Djoker and Fed was clearly good enough to wreck one of thier dreams.

Cant think of another tourney where there was just No Chance in helll

an argument for Isner could be made as he was 2 sets to one up against Nadal in R1, then if he got the job done he could’ve servebotted his way to the final and there take advantage of Breakpointerer, stealing one minibreak in each set tie-break.

only kidding, I agree completely, well-written sir.

Good thread premise. This one is tricky. It would have to be one of the French Opens considering how much harder Nadal will make this achievement. I say 2011 would take it. One negative you can point out is that Nadal was nowhere near his clay peak that tournament and perhaps Djokovic didn’t deliver his best performance in the semis (though it was really just Fed GOATing on the day), but that has to be a tricky one.

Some other good ones I can think of are AO 2012 and USO 2011 which both featured a well-playing Big 3 (though there are arguments that Federer and Nadal in those respective tournaments disappointed at the end). Since their primes don’t overlap very much, it’s hard to find a tournament in which all three were playing close to their best.

But surely RG 2011 comes closest.

I started watching around 2011 so can’t think of much earlier. Also missed many grand slams while at college. Of the ones I watched, I think you got it right. Nadal in form on clay, ultron Djokovic looking unbeatable, Fed rises up to the challenge to beat Djokovic and almost takes the first set off Nadal in the finals. All were very strong.

I really don't know what Djokovic could have done better in this match. Alright, he didn't have 0 unforced errors in this match, but let's discuss realistic things. He was at his absolute peak in 2011 and Federer had to bring an amazing performance to stop his 43 match winning streak.

Djokovic could have backed up the break in the 4th and he started the 2nd set off slow. Still it was a high level clay match from him and he still lost.

He didn't really do much wrong while serving for the fourth set. Didn't even miss a single first serve. (got 6/6 first serves in that game). Federer broke back with some very good shots, was kinda surprising after it looked like he lost his form in the previous game.

Djokovic could have won the first set, that one was really even and someone had to take it. Well, Federer ended up being a bit more clutch. It was impressive how Federer managed to stay clutch and win the match despite converting only 4/25 break points.
