Tomic is the future McEnroe

I have high hopes for Tomic and really wish he becomes a McEnroe of new generation. Not that his progress inspires so much confidence, but his game is what modern tennis needs in my opinion.

Tomic sets an example how to keep tennis playful (for lack of a better word) and how to use the technology -- advanced racquet and strings, -- in a most creative and inspiring ways. His technique is a polar opposite from Nadal's brute force approach. And it amazes me when in frantic rhythm of modern game, someone still has time to stay in touch with the ball. And build the whole game around touch (like McEnroe), while being able to slap the ball hard (unlike McEnroe) with soft hands.

Besides, the way Tomic moves -- in a "lazy" relaxed manner (energy efficient yet quick), makes me believe that tennis can still be a healthy sport. And attractive too, as there is a seeming simplicity and freedom in how he approaches and hits the ball. Maybe tennis technique is not that complicated after all? And raw McEnroe-grade talent is not the only way to naturally develop perfect kinetic chain and soft hands?

I really hope Tomic succeeds despite his troublesome and/or weak character, because his game sets an excellent example for a new generation.

Yes, I really love the way he plays when he is 'on'

(I suspect he might be a bit of a turkey in private, but meh, such an unusual game!)

on a side note, it's interesting to note so many naysayers in the Australian media after his loss to Del Potro, all conveniently forgettting he had done what none of the rest could do and played his way into the final in the first place!

(you could always turn it into a thread about his Radicals? presumably a pj of his old favourites rather than those new ones..)

I thought Yonex is his favorite?
A bit worried how the switch will affect his game.

Anyway, back to general pro player discussion...
Tomic could be a trouble, but McEnroe was a trouble too. Always good to see someone real, not a robot or all business.

mac was not the most powerful player but he was very fast and a great athlete. he also had a no nonsense game and attacked relentlessly. he would do an occasional touch shot but certainly not fool around on court like tomic.

and he had a very good serve, tomic needs to improve that to be a top player.

Undoubtedly, he has a long way to go. But even today at his level he sets a precedent, that tennis can be
1. slow
2. fun
3. easy
...even at the top level.

And this is all that viewers/recreational players need to see for the sport to get a second wind.
