Speaking of tennis commentators on TV, you know what's really annoying?
All these Talk Tennis members b*tching incessantly about pretty much every single person who commentates on pro tennis matches. If we listened to even the more moderate of these whiners, the better tennis commentators should be publicly flogged, while the worst ones are committing such unpardonably egregious acts that they should be rounded up and permanently silenced in a gas chamber. What's that? He made reference to a semi-obscure hall of fame player from decades ago? Take that hammer to his kneecap!
Many of these people are clever enough to post here 70 times a day and include cutesy little video clips in many of their posts and pseudo-bold personal statements as their signature each time they leave a comment. However, not so many of them are bright enough to appreciate just what a bloody difficult job it is to describe, in an intelligent and interesting fashion, exactly what is happening in a fast-moving sport, yet fill the very frequent pauses in action with interesting, astute, and relevant anecdotes, and to do this for the entirety of matches that last at least one and sometimes up to four or more hours, no less.
Yes, some of these commentators are better than others, but there definitely is a pattern here, namely, trashing every single American who opens his or her mouth during a tennis match. I find that ironic, because the only two commentators I've noticed who stood out as being particular bad were Boris Becker with his bizarre soundbites that make John Madden sound cerebral and original, and that Brit with the speech impediment who has never in his entire broadcast career managed to spit out a full sentence or complete a single thought. Even then, neither of these two gentlemen deserve more than, say, a 20 minute session of waterboarding for their transgressions.
