Tracey & Mary commentating: Men's Tennis

There have been innumerable threads on Mary Carillo but the Tennis Channel now has her for Miami; she has absolutely nothing substantive to say. She actually brought up Virginia Wade the other day (won a Wimbledon in 1977). She gossips and chuckles. And then I find myself listening to commentation of a men's match by Tracy Austin and Mary Carillo combined! I really don't need to hear about their accomplishments back in the dark ages. Austin's voice is really annoying; she sounds like a little girl. And of course they go on and on about the American, whoever that may be, and what he needs to do to win the match. It's just so biased and without any objectivity.

Oh to have the terse announcing by Robbie Koenig and Jason Goddall at all times.

Yeah... but what are you gonna do? Mute the sound? You'd think the Tennis Channel would survey viewer satisfaction on their broadcasters. Maybe those two are working for free?

On top of her other "lovely" traits, Carillo talks over points in practice more than anybody I can think of. When ya got a tournament this size and matches on 12 hours a day and more, slim pickings are inevitable.

Speaking of tennis commentators on TV, you know what's really annoying?

All these Talk Tennis members b*tching incessantly about pretty much every single person who commentates on pro tennis matches. If we listened to even the more moderate of these whiners, the better tennis commentators should be publicly flogged, while the worst ones are committing such unpardonably egregious acts that they should be rounded up and permanently silenced in a gas chamber. What's that? He made reference to a semi-obscure hall of fame player from decades ago? Take that hammer to his kneecap!

Many of these people are clever enough to post here 70 times a day and include cutesy little video clips in many of their posts and pseudo-bold personal statements as their signature each time they leave a comment. However, not so many of them are bright enough to appreciate just what a bloody difficult job it is to describe, in an intelligent and interesting fashion, exactly what is happening in a fast-moving sport, yet fill the very frequent pauses in action with interesting, astute, and relevant anecdotes, and to do this for the entirety of matches that last at least one and sometimes up to four or more hours, no less.

Yes, some of these commentators are better than others, but there definitely is a pattern here, namely, trashing every single American who opens his or her mouth during a tennis match. I find that ironic, because the only two commentators I've noticed who stood out as being particular bad were Boris Becker with his bizarre soundbites that make John Madden sound cerebral and original, and that Brit with the speech impediment who has never in his entire broadcast career managed to spit out a full sentence or complete a single thought. Even then, neither of these two gentlemen deserve more than, say, a 20 minute session of waterboarding for their transgressions.

There is some truth to what you say, but seriously, have you heard Mary Carillo?

She is BAAAAAAD.

The McEnroe brothers, Cahill, Gilbert, Navratilova starting to grow on me... all good.

Carillo is a "C" minus... some days rates a D. Austin is "F". But yeah, the job is a difficult one that requires talent... soooo?

CurrenFan : while the commentators are perhaps better than everyone in this forum, it is no rocket science to commentate a tennis match.

You need someone who is an astute observer , funny and eloquent in their speech. I am pretty sure there are hundreds out there who can do a better job.

I think Paul Annacone is pretty good. I do realize that many comments are off the cuff, and of course they are live. One of his comments did kind of bug me though; he was asked how Murray's court movement scored against the other top 3.
He said: towards the top, so let's say he comes in second, then that means his movement is better than Federer, Djocovich, and or Nadal? I'm not so sure about that.

I think Tennis Channel has clearly invested in some of these big names and have given them instructions on livening things up...I used to like Mary a lot and have great respect for Paul, but those two and MJ were getting a little loopy last night...Mary did say the Isner and Raonic match was not good viewing so if you want a hard-edged opinion designed to tick some people off while pleasing others, she gave it to you....with the top american player involved

I was without TC for a number of years after having it from the very beginning and when it came back they had done a lot of things that I felt they needed...a lot more tennis news and discussion shows, not just trips to resorts and practice sessions so I'm not going to complain too much...even took off the ticker for a while the other day, that should continue, just a few times an hour...Haber is really annoying, a bit nasty

I'll say this for Austin, she's not afraid to really bash a player. She doesn't play it careful like the announcers looking for coaching gigs. Carillo is useless.

Just to clarify, I'm delighted that I have the Tennis Channel. They seem to have taken over some of the matches that used to be on ESPN.
