Tried Skin Feel grip, like this better

I got a little too big a handle size for my last two racquet purchases, so I got Babolat Skin Feel replacement grips. They turned out to be exactly the size I wanted, but they are just to solid feeling for me. Without the softer overgrips that I like best (Gamma Supreme), the tackiness of the Skin Feel wasn't as effective. I tried wrapping a Supreme over the Skin Feel, and although it's a relatively thin overgrip, it returned the overall size to the stock grip size.

So I got creative and tried two different grip setups on the two racquets. On one I used a Dunlop Hydramax overgrip (1 mm thickness) as a base layer and topped it with a Supreme overgrip. On the other one I used two layers of Gamma Gauze Tape (much better than Tourna) for a base and topped it with a Gamma RZR Tac overgrip. On the gauze tape I started with one piece twice the length of an overgrip. Wrap the handle once with a 1/2 overlap.

The grip with the Hydramax base was more solid and the racquet felt more raw and a little more harsh than with Skin Feel. The grip with gauze tape makes the racquet feel very comfortable. The Supreme and RZR Tac overgrips both offer much better grip. Because they are softer, your fingers can sink in a little. RZR Tac is a little thicker than Supreme.

Last night, I switched the Hydramax racquet over to the gauze tape setup. Where it was an extremely sensitive racquet before, it mellowed nicely with the gauze tape. So if you need a thin grip, but you want to use your favorite overgrip, try this out.

If you use 2 overgrip on bare handle, I noticed 2 problems:

1. racket butt becomes too thin, a replacement grip usually will make the butt feel much thicker/bigger.

2. the racket becomes more head-light. You need to add lead-tape on handle.

I agree on both counts.

Since my Dunlop racquets have very little taper at the butt anyway it really doesn't bother me. I did notice the difference though. It's easy to beef that up with some tape. I've used 1/2" wide medical tape from the pharmacy.

I added 3g of lead tape to the pallet to account for the missing weight on the Skin Feel grip. I guess I should have mentioned that too.

Okay the butt of these two racquets was a bit narrow, so I put a layer of 1/2" wide medical tape under the overgrips. They're fine now.
