SHANGHAI, China (AP) - Second-seeded Rafael Nadal withdrew from the Tennis Masters Cup on Monday less than two hours before his opening match, the latest high-profile player to exit the season-ending tournament.
Nadal pulled out with an injured left foot. The 19-year-old Spaniard had been due to play Gaston Gaudio of Argentina in a round-robin match in the Gold Group.
Less than an hour later, Andre Agassi lost to Russian Nikolay Davydenko, then pulled out after re-aggravating an injury to his left ankle. Fernando Gonzalez of Chile will replace Agassi.
American Andy Roddick and Marat Russian Safin withdrew before the tournament because of injuries and Australia's Lleyton Hewitt decided to stay in Sydney with his wife, Rebecca Cartwright, who is expecting the couple's first child within two weeks.
What a pain in the ass! Disappointing that most of the world's best are sub-par due to injury. What surprised me was the Agassi ankle- anyone hear about this already?
Surely this is an indication that something needs to be done about the gruelling tour...these guys are no slouches when it comes to fitness...bah! I was really looking forward to seeing AA and Rafa give Fed a run for his money...
So who's Fed's biggest competition from the Gold Group?
