US Open 2017 - East Side Lodging, Public Courts

I attended the US Open several times starting in the late 90's, but it's going on 10 years now since I've gone. In the past whether for work or personal reasons I always stayed in Manhattan and took the train out and back, but this time around I'll only be there for a couple days early in the first week, and am interested in possibly staying somewhere in Queens or even further east, say Port Washington.

I'll be flying in to LaGuardia, and meeting a friend who's separately flying in and with whom I'll share lodging, be it hotel, Airbnb, whatever. My primary considerations are price and hopefully some public courts (walking distance to lodging would be really nice) where we could get out and hit in the mornings before heading over for the matches.

Also, once upon a time AmEx ran a bag check on the Open grounds for cardholders where you could park luggage for the day. Handy if you were coming right in from the airport, or maybe flying out after. That was pre 9/11, and I don't think any on-grounds-bag-check like that is available at this point, but if anyone knows differently I'd really like to hear about it. My last day there I'd ideally like to shoot right from watching day matches over to the airport, so have to figure out a way to deal with my bag. Any ideas?

Thanks for any assistance - look forward to your comments.

Not sure about nearby lodging and public courts but in the past few years there has been a bag check trailer outside the grounds by the south entrance (closer to the giant globe fountain). Cost is $5 per day. Enjoy the Open and make sure to bring sunscreen and a good hat.

Thx for the tip about the bag check. Hopefully that'll be an option this year as well - will look into it.

EDIT: Here's more info including bag check...

Regarding public courts there are some just outside the Open/BJK Tennis Center, across the boardwalk in from the train just as you get near the entrance. You can see them in the satellite pic on this page...

In years past it seemed to me that they might have been reserved for extra practice courts during the Open, possibly also for qualifying matches. Does anyone know if they're available for public play during the actual tournament, and, if so, how difficult it might be to get a court there early in the morning?

They are used for the juniors for qualifying matches during the first week, so they are not available

probably need to cross ref courts with the hotel/airBnb location: https://tennisround.com/tennis-courts/search
I'm doing the same thing for my vacation(s) :)

bag check.. last year there was a 3rd party vendor outside the grounds that were renting big/small lockers for like $5-10. i had to check my metal (double walled growler type water bottle) there. i don't recall an area for luggage, but then again, i wasn't looking for it.

Appreciate the responses and info. Have a place to stay set up, just a couple questions if anyone can weigh in...

How much is a cab ride these days to get from LaGuardia over to The Tennis Center?
EDIT: Many fare finders online now - looks like $20 or so, depending on traffic

Is it really necessary to get a permit to play tennis on a court in an outer borough (specifically Queens) public park?

Generally speaking, yes. Unless you go to the ones that are not manned. Those you can just walk on and stay as longs you like. Otherwise. it's $15/permit.
