UTEP men's tennis. A fantasy team

Ok so I will run my fantasy team in this thread. I am the coach and my assistant coach is a woman which is a big deal. I started the program 3 years ago and finally last year won a national championship going into the tournament as the #10 seed.

This was my line-up last year:

1. Bernard Sverrir, Junior, Rekjavik,Iceland, 5'9
2. Vijay Thirimanne, Junior, Colombo,Sri Lanka, 6'2
3. Jalal Jahan, Freshman, Shiraz,Iran, 5'9
4. Lester George, Senior, Port of Spain,Trinidad&Tobago, 6'4 (lefty)
5. Kennedy Omondi, Freshman, Nairobi,Kenya, 6'4
6. Rosman Mohammed Kasim, Junior, Brunei, 5'9

7. Miguel Las Palmas,Sophomore, Panama City,Panama, 6'2 (lefty)
8. Emerson Charles, Senior, Barbados, 6'0

Doubles:
1. George/Charles
2. Thirimanne/Kasim
3. Las Palmas/Jahan

This season

Lost George and Charles to graduation and Las Palmas transferred to USF.

New additions:
Vignesh Veerabadran, Chennai,India, 5'7
Soloman Rondon, Maracaibo,Venezuela, 6'1
Rae Lan, San Diego,CA, 5'11

None of those 3 newcomers are better than George but they are all better than the other two who left.

anticipated line-up (with ranking after fall results)

1. #8 Bernard Sverrir
2. #7 Vijay Thirimanne
3. #20 Jalal Jahan
4. #35 Rosman Mohammed Kasim
5. #72 Kennedy Omondi
6. battle between the 3 newcomers.

I expect to have a revolving door among the top 3. Any of them could play 1-3 each day.

Playing styles:

Sverrir: Very very talented ball striker. takes it very early and has pro quality strokes. Think of a Davydenko style. Mentally a bit fragile and will randomly lose sets. His matches have a lot of weird scores like 6-1 0-6 6-3 an the like based on his streaky style of play and small reliance on serve.

Thirimanne: Strong flat hitter who plays very smart. Chooses the spots when to go for shots very well. Has the best serve on the team and can come into net as well.

Jahan: Relentless energy ballstriker. Moves around the court like a flash. Very aggressive player who likes to take the ball early. More consistent than Sverrir but has less angle potential on his shots.

Kasim: Similar to Jahan except hits with more topspin and does not have the same finishing ability as Jahan does. Physically very strong and can break his opponent down with.

Omondi: Very strange player. Tall and gangly. Uses a lot of slice and has a one handed backhand. Hits a good amount of aces. Think of Marin Cilic style except the backhand.

Rondon: Very powerful hitter who likes to crush the forehand from the back of the court. Massive serve as well.

Veerabadran: Very crafty and wiley player. Hits almost everything slice. Impossible to get a rhythm against and has goofy scorelines in his matches just like Sverrir,

Lan: Solid all around player.

would be very interesting to get an answer from the first poster of this topic
if it just in his own fantasy and memories or if it is sth like a "real game"
also it is only fantasy

Do these players exist? Do they have something to do with UTEP?

These players are fictitious. The names are real though based on other sports or people from these countries. And I chose UTEP because they do not currently have a men's tennis team. It's a start up.

How can you have a fantasy team with fictitious players? And why would the rest of us want to read such nonsense?

Excuse me please. Because I do not want to use the name and likeness of real players. All other teams will have fictitious players as well. There is no college tennis video game so this will act as a sort of college tennis video game. Others can create their own team if they wish and join in on this. I will also create digital representations of each of these players through graphic design.

Your fantasy players are coming from areas where tennis is not popular. It would be amazing if any good players came from Brunei, T&T, Sri Lanka, Iceland, Kenya or Iran.

I am going to restart this for this year. Please state your team in this thread and we can have representations of matches. I am staying with my UTEP team

As college fantasies go this one is pretty poor, I would love to hear feddy's fantasies. Oh right. Maybe not so much.

In an itf 16s a few yrs ago, kennedy played dubs with vuk udaskovic, 6'0", skopje, macedonia. They kept in touch through snapchat. Well guys, Utep is recruiting vuk! His board scores are weak, but his tweener is strong, which is a big deal to coach.

I am considering a trip to el paso for spring break. Take in some matches, maybe some tex-mex. Or mex-mex? Anyone want to hit after watching the team in a dual match?

EDIT:
Oh no! Breaking news!
More than half of the utep fantasy tennis team has been indicted in a FAKE INTERNET GIRLFRIEND RING. the FBI has not disclosed names yet. Was this on farmersonly.com, you think? Or phantom tennis groupies.org? More importantly, how will this affect our spring break plans?

it is just his fantasies..^^

nice idea..but with nothing to play for and now "rules" ...maybe should present us a "system" or player cards....for a tennis fantasy game?

Let me take a stab it this.

Stay up late and get up early for oz oipen coverage,
hallucinate a little bit from either lack of sleep or a pair of full-strength aussie beers,
make stuff up,
then share it your fellow University of Texas at El Paso Miner fans.

Oh snap. Rosman Kasim just cheated on a paper. Honor Code violation resulted in academic probation. His parents are pulling him out. Transferring him to the LSE. Great school. Not a good tennis team.

Rae Lan just broke up with his fake girlfriend. This just happened over text on Wednesday during geology class (rocks for jocks). She is the one who made him spell his name RAE. He is going back to the more irish-sounding Rea, but also toying with the cooler, Spanish-influenced Rey. He is serving absolutely huge all of a sudden. Expect great things from Rea. I mean Rey.

This is the train wreck stage of your program. You won a natty at a dumphole school 3 yrs after starting the program with a bunch of overaged international mercenaries. Now the NCAA comes in and finds out that some west TX oilman booster has been paying your players. Wait is this an fiction based on fact relying heavily on Baylors national championship team. Are you Matt Knoll?

Now the worst news, Rey Lan has an endorsement from Ray Ban and loses his amateur status. But don't worry coach knoll...errrr...coach gamekok...your school has great lawyers and you will never win again with your 26 year old Germans getting paid under the table but you will skate on the major charges and UTEP will "overlook" the rest provided you keep on winning.

Well I will admit that some of these players did come to UTEP under fairly suspicious circumstances. However you are wrong in your accusation of a 26 year old German. There are no Germans on the team and these players are of college age.

And this team does win. They win a lot. I would like to see some competition though.

Let's match this team up vs a current real life college team and speculate who would win. How about Virginia.

We are still waiting to see if Borna Coric gets cleared by the NCAA.
