Volkl Cyclone 18 vs Solinco Hyper-G 18

Hello folks,

So this one is for all the Hyper-G and Cyclone enthusiasts/users. I am thinking about moving from Pro-Hurricane to either Volk Cyclone, or the Solinco Hyper-G. I like PH but it is time to move on. I've played a lot with the Cyclone 18 guage and love it (52-51 lbs).

My question is this: how would you compare the two i-e Cyclone and Hyper-G. Do they play similar? What are some similarities and differences? I will be sticking to 18 guage as I like the feel of a thinner guage. The sticks will be APD2013 and PD2012, two of my favorites.

Thanks in advance for all your comments.

If you are Spin oriented player that hits with power, I think you will love Hyper-G. you can generate some monster spin with this one and control is pretty decent. Only thing I didn't like about it was the feel. it felt bit like plastic.

The person I play against love cyclone. He switched from RPM to the Cyclones. I don't notice the difference in his strokes. My opinion is that texture strings play about the same. The biggest differences in polys are slickness and stiffness. That is what you want to look for in deciding between cyclone and hyper g.

I really feel like shaped polys like hyper-G and tourbite gives you much more spin than round polys like Alu power and even RPM blast. this is even more true if you hybrid

Thanks. One thing I know is that I get more spin with RPM Blast (which is not exactly round, its octagonal) than Tourbite (square). I played with Tourbite last year in my league matches. Liked it a lot but in all honesty, my groundstrokes worked best with Cyclone and RPM Blast. I know from experience that most pure round polys just dont work that well with my strokes even though I'd rank my strokes fairly spinny (not overly spinny) so I guess they are out. Since Tourbite and Hyper-G both are square and I know Tourbite works well for me, trying Hyper-G seems like a logical move. Thanks for your suggestion and recommendations though. I will try the Hyper-G next.

I love RPM Blast. Started playing with it when it first came out. My only qualm is that it dies too quick on me but when it's fresh, ooh la la :) - I also love Cyclone which works equally well for me so your opinion is spot on about RPM and Cyclone playing alike. Just that I have heard a lot abt Hyper-G from friends and wanted to get feedback.

it is very odd with RPM blast. I used to use it too but didn't feel like it gave me more spin than Tourbite soft. IF you full bed RPM blast, it will generate insane amount of spin but If you hybrid it with Multi, then spin potential drops down drastically. and hybrid job with tourbite soft generates more spin than RPM blast hybrid..... That is how I took it when I played with them both in hybrid job. I can't explain why but Hybrid job for these polys changes things.

I don't hybrid. Always have used full bed polys at lower tensions. A full bed fresh RPM gives me the maximum spin among any other polys I have played with till date as well as any hybrid setup. Full bed cyclone is a very close second. Never had arm/elbow issues and I played varsity in both university and high school. Never felt the need to hybrid as I get the feel from 18 gauge (thinner) and spin from the full bed poly itself.

for me, I need that additional power that multi hybrid can give me...... I used to use All RPM blast full bed, and I had insane spin on my serves(very effective 2nd serve and doubles too) but didn't have that power I wanted on my serves for singles play. so I used Hybrid and stuck with it since.... and if I hybrid with Nat Gut then I can produce even more power.

Yep, different folk different strokes. A ton of my friends play with hybrids and swear by it. Definitely popular combo especially with nat gut mains/poly crosses.

Have you ever tried Pro Supex Blue Gear?

What tension would be good for the blue gear? Alao what is it comparable to? tour bite, cyclone?

Supposedly its a gear shaped version of Big Ace. It's stiffer than Cyclone with better spin imo. Haven't played with it in a while, but it was stiffer than Big Hitter Blue which is my normal string. I'd string it similar to your Big Ace tension or a few lbs lower.

Big Ace has to be one of the softest strings out there... sure it is the same material but textured?

I believe that's how it was marketed. Here's a blub from a description on another website:

"Pro Supex Blue Gear
, the newest innovation from Pro Supex has a hexagonal shape for extreme spin. This still has the same great characteristics as Big Ace, but it enables you to put more spin. The added rough surface and the shape of this string will bite more into the ball. Power is still superb even with the added spin enhancement. This is perfect for the player who likes to play with heavy topspin. Blue Gear is made in Germany."

I haven't played with it in a while, I remember it feeling slightly stiffer than Big Ace, as I was a former Big Ace user until I switched to Big Hitter Blue. I found Big Ace to be stiffer than Big Hitter Blue or Cyclone.

Very late to the thread, but I would like to know what color you used for cyclone.

There is no comparison. Hyper G is a stiff board like string. Cyclone is softer with better feel and tension maintenance. After all the positive reviews about hyper g i thought let’s give it a go. After 20 minutes my arm was in bits. Not as much spin or feel as cyclone and definitely nowhere near the same comfort level. Pardon the pun but don’t believe the hype.

I have used cyclone for a few years before and prefer that over Hyper G. It’s personal but the green string felt very stiff and dead compared to cyclone. Others may say the exact opposite. My pick is Cyclone.
