Watching Old Matches Matches

Do grand slam/networks sell old matches? If I wanted to watch grand slam matches from the 1990s or early 2000s, where would I find them legally?

I've never heard such a thing but that would be a good idea for sure. The Australian Open used to have a channel called "Vault" where you could see classic matches from the 80s to nowadays, that was great. It's available no more, that's too bad. Otherwise I don't think the Grand Slam Tournaments sell any images, simply because they don't own the rights.

In France, we have the INA (basically the memory of the French television) where you can find some old (and newer ?) stuff. You can watch snippets or buy the full video for some Euros. Not sure it's available for foreign countries though.

And you have YouTube ;)

Good luck!

wimbledon used to sell matches on something called videotapes! I'm guessing there's a streaming service now. USO used to 30 minute highlight reels that were a very nice synopsis.

I vaguely remember hearing about this site some time ago and just tried it out. Seems that you can buy buy the full video, regardless if you are in France or not. I just bought the FO 85 final for € 2.99. Pretty awesome.

Be careful if you are in the US. Most Euro DVDs use a different system from the US.

"The video that you see on a standard-definition television screen follows standards established in the 1950s when color television was first introduced. The leading formats in use today are NTSC (National Television System Committee) and PAL (Phase Alternating Line). Generally speaking, NTSC is the standard used in the Americas and Japan, whereas PAL is used in Europe, Australia, the Middle East, and Asia.

This information is relevant only for older standard-definition formats. Many issues related to those formats are no longer of concern when using the newer, high-definition (HD) video formats."

Holy moly, they have Arazi vs Rios from 1997. Been looking for that one for a while. Unlikely it's the whole match as it's only around 1h 49 minutes, unless they edited out changeovers and breaks, but it's much better than anything at all. Supposedly Arazi played God like tennis in the first two sets.

Live broadcast of the men's eighth-finals of the French Open Tennis at the Roland Garros stadium. Match between the Chilean Marcelo RIOS Moroccan Hicham ARAZI. The latter wins the first two sets, RIOS wins the third round ... two games throughout the fourth set but the rain interrupts the game.

Glad if it works in other countries too .

I found some very nice footage from the 80s. Sometimes it’s not the full match because the TV broadcast didn’t cover the full match either. Apart from that, great quality at a ridiculous low price. Hope you can find what you’re looking for :)

Yeah, thanks a lot. I went on a little binge and ordered 15 or so matches. Brilliant prices as you say.

I'm in New Zealand and I just chose the download option instead. They have quite a few gems here, still browsing....
Thanks for the tip off. It says 2.99 per month, but its per match? Unfortunately seems only a few are full match& some are cut up into parts? Is commentary french?

Yeah, commentary is French. I just sort the matches from descending time duration. Most of the longer matches are full length, if you're not sure you can check the description.

Yeah, it's per match. Excellent quality as well.

With so many matches it does beg the question why so many are 15 or 30 minute segments? Guess it's a question of being grateful for anything....

Plan to purchase Borg Lendl 81. I will give my review tommorrow.

I bought it, it's the full match and the quality is great for 1981. If you want, I can upload as a mega link.

INA is all about public television from the 50s to today but it's not a tennis channel, that's maybe why... that said, if there are snippets, it means that full matches are available. There is a "pro" subscription but I don't know if it opens the doors to extra and full content but I could ask, I guess.

Sometimes they update their content so maybe it's worth checking from time to time.

Roland-Garros has always belonged to the public TV, that's why you won't find anything on other grand slams but you can find some footage from the Paris Open, formerly Bercy. Still better than nothing though for us, die hard fans :)

I think the premium is a monthly payment to *access* all videos. I have asked if they envisage putting the full matches on at some point. Will let you know what they say, if they understand google translate french!

Let me know if I can help, I'm French ;)

Hi, this is the reply I got: "
Malheureusement, nous ne pouvons répondre que partiellement à votre demande car l?arbitrage effectué sur ces programmes est documentaire et juridique.
Mais à priori nous ne devrions pas revenir sur la proposition actuelle. "

which I think basically says they don't want to talk about it because of legal reasons. I don't think they understood what I was asking. When you have time I would be grateful if you could ask them whether they plan for the 'clips' to become full matches, & whatever else you think to ask.

Indeed their answer isn’t very clear, I mean I don’t understand what they wanted to say exactly. I’ll ask by the end of the week and I’ll get back to you. Which matches are you talking about precisely?

I received the exact same reply from the BBC when I wrote to them in 1976 (?) asking for the possibility of getting a copy of the 1967 Wimbledon Pro matches......which indicated , mutely, that they still had them in their vault archives.

The only way you can get an old BBC tape is to have been a participant on the programme (so I guess e.g. a ball boy), and the pay £50 for the privilege of whatever they give you. They must be keeping them for when our alien overlords return.

Hi BBW,

Got this reply today:

« Les prestations sportives sont encadrées par des mandats avec les fédérations.
Aujourd’hui seul un partenariat avec la FFT nous permet de proposer des matchs de Roland Garros.

https://www.ina.fr/emissions/roland-garros

Nous vous invitons ensuite à cocher la case "premium" pour obtenir les contenus telechargeables / gravables qui seront identifiables par " en savoir +" en dessous des videos concernées. »

To make it short, they have a deal with the French Tennis Federation, that is why we can have access to the RG stuff, from 1967 to nowadays, which is pretty good after all. I understand that they can only propose what the French federation allows them to.

You can click on the « premium » option to have access to all the downloadable content.

I’m afraid we won’t have more than what’s already available, full matches or just extracts. As it covers 50 years of RG, that ain’t too bad and I’m sure many of us can find some gems. And the quality is superb.

All I can say is to visit their website from time to time as they update their database with fresh stuff regularly.

Good luck :)

Thank you Nico! Can you please clarify these two statements 'I’m afraid we won’t have more than what’s already available, full matches or just extracts' & 'All I can say is to visit their website from time to time as they update their database with fresh stuff regularly.'

Do you mean that if an extract of a match is already there, it won't be updated/expanded, but they may add new matches?

Thanks

You’re welcome :)

I have no idea... but I’ve been visiting this website on and off looking for some uploads featuring Mats Wilander but I saw nothing really new at least this year. I think they’re adding things (for example I had never the 1967 videos so far...) but this is not a tennis related website so I guess we should keep our fingers crossed.

As for the extract vs expanded matches, I think that all that you can get by now is already up... so far. Don’t forget to click on the premium option to see what you can ultimately get.

And I had that Leconte-Chesnokov match on VHS but I lost it long ago, too bad. Great 5 setters as far as I can remember.

Good luck.
