How about being of an age to watch them and recognize them as worthy winners? I struggle to understand how it can be fashionable to talk rubbish about legitimate champions.

How about taking a joke, having a beer and not being condescending? They are great champions indeed, but not in the caliber TMF sees them. If Hewitt and Safin are really ALL THAT with 2 slams then I struggle to see how these same posters minimize Nadal, Djokovic and Sampras to make Federer look better.

They aren't God's, but they are better than Gaudio, Johansson, and a whole slew of other players that should be mentioned.

Demolishing an All Time Great in a slam final isn't grounds for the mentioned to be "weak"; simply those who do so are haters who underrate these players and push up weak players like Ferrer.

Calm down Hewitt-girl, I don't think he's weak and Hewitt is still one of my favorite players. Gods+Gif= get what I'm saying. Safin was my fav player before Nadal and after Roddick. They're both overrated on this BOARD, nothing more nothing less.

I don't believe I have ever seen this degree of aggrandizing of Hewitt and Safin that you speak of, I'm sorry. What I do know is I hate the way players with fewer/no Slams and sub/Masters tournaments are talked about here. It is no laughing matter.

I don't think either are overrated, they are underrated by the vast majority of people here (comparing them to players who wouldn't win anything and saying if they transported such players into a different time they'd win more or as much).

Hewitt and Safin won 2 slams. That's how good they were. That's a huge compliment. Both guys are awesome. But that's the extent of their greatness. Right on Murray level for me.

As I iterated in another thread, Kodes won three yet I wouldn't put him over either Safin or Hewitt. Slam count may be the most important metric, but context is important, too.

That said, there are enough people overrating them and enough people underrating them that I think their historical significance among the tennis populus balances out.

Indeed, Kodes won his slams in some depleted fields and was not a YE #1 like Hewitt was.
