Patience is your best tool. Lots of walks are very good for a young dog with tons of energy. Develop some routines so Murphy can settle into some kind of schedule. Get a portable kennel - a good-sized one he can grow into - and use it while you are away. I have found with my labs that the kennel becomes their "space", and is an area of security and comfort. Plus it keeps them from chewing on everything in the house, or going to the bathroom inside and those sorts of things.
Your dog is very smart - your job is to figure out how to communicate most effectively what you want him to do. Attend obedience school with him - maybe two sessions. He'll learn basic commands like sit, stay, heel, come etc and will be able to please you with his obedience.
And love him.
