What are your favorite rock guitar solos of all time?

Gary Moore..."Still Got The Blues For You"!

I had a lot of dead time tonight at work so I pulled up two other strong tunes from the late Mr. Moore that had awesome solo segments. Why did he have to pull a "Bonham" with the binge drinking that killed him??? The guy was still playing some mean guitar!

Not to get too philosophical about it, but I don't think instrumental guitar tracks by the g3 guys really qualify as rock guitar solos. It's a niche genre. I used to love it but have lately started to kind of dislike it. The only one of those guys I still well and truly respect as a musician and not just guitarist is Steve vai. ....and I still don't really like the stuff. I just know he's legit. Dude played with zappa

How is it noone mentioned "Cliffs of Dover" by Eric Johnson?
You just did.

I believe I have a copy of all of EJ's studio material. Absolutely sick player.....and probably one of the best "professors" of the craft as well. His instructional videos demonstrated some of his craftsmanship.

I think most of Venus Isle is just ridiculous!!! "when the sun meets the sky" brings modern electric guitar to a new level. Alien Love Child (live) also highly recommended.

I have never had the pleasure of seeing EJ live, only on Austin City Limits several years ago.....if you aren't familiar with EJ's stuff you need to be.

If you all like cajun mixed with blues Tab Benoit is solid, I have seen him live here at Chan's.....seen Coco Montoya there too.

Saw Jonny Lang here locally when he was 16 I believe...gifted young player at the time.

Agree great thread!!

Probably because, like Satriani's Crushing Day & Satch Boogie I mentioned earlier, the whole song is a solo.

But yes, a very smooth, clean soloist. And, unlike Satriani, he can actually sing...

The real "prince" of the axe was teenage Derek Trucks, who I saw live several times in the early 90's. Check him out on a solo from a July 4 jam festival in '93 doing "Layla". He also covers Harrison's "Isn't it a Pity" with his most recent Tedeschi Trucks Band lineup.

Machine Head's fastest track Highway Star! Richie Blackmore's classically inspired piece is the best heavy metal riff in history! Not only that, it also contains an organ solo by the late Jon Lord (R.I.P.). it's got everything--I love it, I need it, I see it! It's a killing machine!

I like the interplay between Walsh & Felder on Hotel California. It was a fun little challenge to learn and switch between their tones.

Also the solo to Black Coffee In Bed by Squeeze is awesome. Also cool to learn.

Stone Roses I Am The Resurrection

Brian Setzer is incredible

Are you talking about Windowpane from Opeth by any chance?

Yea! Do you like it too? :) What are some of your favourites?

Yeah Opeth is one of the most unique bands I have ever heard. There are a lot of songs from them I like

Windowpane
Ghost Of Perdition
Blackwater Park
April Ethereal
When
Remember Tomorrow
In my time of Need
Advent
Hours Of Wealth
Weakness

Those are probably my top ten

Alter Bridge : 'Blackbird'
Ry Cooder : (John Hiatt's) 'Lipstick Sunset'
Mark Knopfler : Sultans of Swing'
Eric Johnson : 'Cliffs of Dover'
Hendrix : 'Red House'
Simon Binks : 'Errol'

So many more

Alex Lifeson has some nice tunes/solos, like these, Vital Signs and Red Barchetta.

My favorite of Lifeson's is the "Lerxst in Wonderland" solo from "La Villa Strangiato" (about 3:39 mark): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNilsLf6eW4

It's such a great solo I can even forgive it for Metallica.

Can't believe no-one's mentioned "Don't Fear the Reaper."

Couple other under-appreciated ones:

The solo from Bob Seger's "Mainstreet"

Steve Rothery's solo from Marillion's "Kayleigh" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6p09jqRLp8)

If I was to rank them, I'd put this one--an absolute marvel of simplicity--just behind "Comfortably Numb" (solo begins 5:46):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RraylR8rFfY

which was ripped off as an equally-beautiful solo by Trey Anastasio:

Oh, and shredders take note--there's a 14-year-old girl coming to beat you up:

No, you don't!:-|

The great Jon Lord's classically-inspired Hammond organ solos and Richie Blackmore's classically-inspired Fender Stratocaster guitar riffs!

Smoke,Burnt,Strange kind of woman and a bit in Child in time.Yeah, Blackmore always found time for those predictable yet amazing full scale riffs.

Difference with Page is Blackmore is better technically but Page is more creative

I know it's obvious but I really do like Don Felder and Joe Walsh on Hotel California. I've learned it and it's a very well crafted solo. I prefer it slightly to Crossroads & Sweet Child...

This 2 minute diddy starting at 13:24 really showcases Stolt's chops. Starting with a laid back, funky, jazzy thing the solo builds intensity and excitement in classic Roine style, bending, shaping, virtually sculpting each note of each riff. I love how he improvises complex and powerful melodies without trying to to cram in as many notes as possible.

Chicago Transit Authority's Terry Kath in "25 or 6 to 4"

^ 'tis a shame that he died so young. Legend has it that Jimi Hendrix, who also tragically died at a young age, was a real fan of Terry Kath.

http://copywriter31.hubpages.com/hub/Jimi-Hendrix-or-Terry-Kath-Who-Was-The-Greatest-Guitarist-of-All-Time
.

^ Rather ironic. Kath was something of an anomaly. He did not read music -- he was an untrained musician surrounded by a group of college-trained musicians. I've read that his band-mates were in awe of his natural abilities.
If I had the power to save one deceased rocker from their untimely demise, I think I would have chosen Kath.

Yes, the late Terry Kath was and is one of the most underrated guitarists ever, and while it's hard to pick a 'best' this is one of the best guitar solos I've heard (I saw Led Zeppelin play live twice and Page is tough to beat). Everyone seems to think only hard rock or heavy metal guitarists merit worth--but Kath proved that false. Forget he played in a band that had a horn section--he could really play and this is a great guitar solo. Jimi Hendrix himself was a big fan of Kath.
