Does anyone have a list of what the average gs speed of the current top 10 like Nadal, Djoker and Federer is?

Are you interested in exact averages, or order-of-magnitude numbers? If you're interested in the latter, then 100 mph is considered really fast and you see these rarely, so the average might be near 75-80 mph on the forehands. Hope this helps.

Coming to think of it, I would be really interested in the variance rather than the average, not only on speeds but also on the length of the strokes. These numbers would correlate well with the player's variety.

They all hit the snot out of the ball. Happy?

Come on now, that's an interesting question and one that we don't see here very often with all the Federer/Nadal threads. There's really no need to be snippy. Is this really that much worse than the "Federer is the goat lulz," "Nadal's a goat lulz," and "A goat is really a goat lulz" threads we have?

Everytime time someone hits an 80MPH shot they talk and make a big deal about it , so I would say that it should be below 80's.

I don't know if an average is a meaningful number. I think it varies a lot. Even in a hard hitting rally, I would think the speed typically ranges from about 50-80mph. The hardest return of serve probably get close to 100mph these days. JMHO!

They showed a graphic in the first set of Nalbandian/Cilic, average speed of groundies: Nalbandian 76 mph, Cilic 71 mph.

BTW, here is research of how fast pros hit the ball off the ground (topspin fh's and bh's). This includes players such as sampras, agassi, muster, brugera, courier, rios, phillipousis etc.

Wow a lot of real good stuff here.....one that stands out is Bruguera topspin.

I can vouch for those numbers I saw him in a match at New Haven against another top player(wish I could remember who) and he was taking the ball 5/8 feet behind the baseline and turning the ball egg shaped. The amount of fuzz coming off the ball was astounding and the ball leap of the court when it landed......it was just amazing how much top that dude hit......

absolute hilarious post coming from you, especially considering you swear Rosewall was hitting 80+ mph backhand slices.

today they showed on Cilic X Nalbandian match the average of their ground strokes.I am not sure if it was a misture of FH and BH or one or the other, but I think
Nalbandian=78 MPH
Cilic=72 MPH
I have seen:
Del Potro hit a 118 mph forehand against Fed on USO final
Gulbis hit a 116 or 118 mph against Roddick USO 2008
Gasquet hit quite a few backhands against Murray this year at FO 107,110,106 MPH
I have seen Nadal hit a 110 mph VS Ancic in IW
More people can give you more numbers.

^^no doubt, these guys could really blast the ball, but those aren't averages.

still, all the pros today hit very slow compared to someone like Rosewall who was hitting 80+ mph slice backhands.

Plus Rosewall has the greatest bh ever despite the very minor fact that he didn't have a topspin bh. Topspin BH's are in fact over rated. Just dominate with slice like Rosewall did.

Your data on Rosewall is inaccurate.

I was (we, * cough *) were in a 4G inverted dive with Rosewall when he hit a 170mph drop volley.

Don't ask me where I was. I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you.

Actually the name "limp hitter" has much more in common with Kenny Rosewall than 80mph slice backhands.

Considering Rosewall had one of the best, most versatile backhands in the history of the game, it would only be hilarious to an ignoramus who never saw him play and doesn't know much about the game!

yeah, I could see your point. According to people like you who glorify the older generation into mythical proportions:

Today players are aided by the racquet and string technology which allows them to hit with the pace they do, yet they can't hit *drive* groundstrokes faster than Rosewall's slice.

Here is a video of Rosewall. Surely the slice he hits at 31 seconds and 1:01 are over 80 mph. LMAO!!!!

Yup, this guy was definitely hitting his slice backhand harder than guys like sampras, agassi, brugera, courier, flipper, forehands etc. LMAO

One more time for dim witted Drekulie! Put down the stupid juice and try to pay attention, boy! If Pete Sampras average backhand was 69mph, then there can be no informed argument that Rosewall, who had a bigger backhand that Pete couldn't hit 80mph.

Those slice backhands are surely much faster than these groundies:

Hey, knucklehead! If these are mean speeds, then your little chart supports my contention that Rosewall could hit 80mph drive slice backhands.

"DOH" --Drek

Uhhhh..... Not really. The only thing that was constant with the older smaller headed rackets was the serve speed, the other shots have gained quite a bit of speed over the years.

The fact is you claimed he hit 80 MPH slice backhands. I will gladly put my foot in my mouth if you prove this, but I don't anticipate chewing on my foot any time soon.

And your opinion is based on what? Actually playing with wood racquets? Actually seeing Rosewall play?

LMAO!!!!!

There appears to be a small typo. It appears like the UNITS used are incorrect.

They feel more like mph (meters per hour) than miles per hour. I can live with Kilometers per hour..... I dont see 80 mph in there.

Ken wouldnt be getting anywhere closer to 80 miles per hour--atleast not in a tennis court rally.

rosewall and Laver was pretty darn good with those wood rackets. I don't think i can beat these guys if i played them with my Babolat racket.

Rosewall would hit everything past you with his 80+ mph slice backhand. :)
