It’s a much more crucial tournament for Nadal and Djokovic than it is for Federer.

I don't think it's crucial for any of them. It's not like the #1 ranking is on the line or something consequential like that. :) Probably the most important match would be a Nadal-Djoker final. If Nadal gets beat down again like he did in AO, it's another ding to his mental confidence against Novak. That will loom large... even on clay this year. Fed's 37, no Masters 1000 is going to be crucial for him either way.

This tourney is much more crucial for Fed. Fed isn't all that far away from guys like Kandy and Nishi in the rankings. And he's defending 600 points. I'd like to see Fed reach the final to defend those points. I don't want Fed to drop too much more in the rankings so that he has tougher draws(FO, for example) in the future. I would like to see Fed eventually get back to being ranked 3rd(wishful thinking).

I’m pretty sure Federer will finish in the top 4 this year (unless he gets injured and misses tournaments).

That said, his seeding at the French Open isn’t that important, and he’ll be in the top 4 at Wimbledon anyway (because of their special seeding). His ranking is only really important from the US Open standpoint.

I don't think it's mental as much as physical with Nadal/Mummy.
Djokovic is the only guy that can really get to EVERY shot Rafa hits. Nadal has to play perfectly, (which he can on a good day like Wimby 18).... but if his game is at all off, Djokovic will eat him up.

I agree, but not (only) because of his age, but rather because he most likely cannot overtake the numbers of Rafa and Novak concerning Masters wins anyway. So if another player reaches 20 Slams, he will be on top of Federer’s achievements anyway because of the Masters titles. Maybe Rafa needs a gap of at least 6 Masters titles because of no WTF though.

Novak needs to beat Kyrgios.
Nadal has to beat Djokovic.
Federer doesn't care for Masters (so I've heard).

On another note, Delpo can’t really get a break! He’ll be losing 1,500 ranking points in three weeks’ time.
Sorry for assaulting this thread, but initiating a new one with that subject would be very depressing for me.

Fed is defending his last year's finalist points while RAFA and Djokovic aren't defending anything.

Djokovic will want to keep momentum, Nadal will want to gain momentum after Acapulco, but can always rely on clay. Fed needs to not fall off a cliff, which has been the case since Aussie 2018

I think it’s a crucial moment for Djoko and Nadal because if the former wins, he will tie Nadal’s Masters record and if the latter wins, he will secure (temporarily) his record. Federer has way less presure on his shoulders because he doesn’t have anything to lose, it’s not a big deal if he loses and evey tournament won is a just a bonus for him at this point.

Nadal has no pression here. Djokovic is the hard court GOAT, so he has the pressure to win both Masters 1000 on hard (IW and Miami). Nadal has the pression to win all the Masters 1000 on clay (MC, Madrid and Rome).

It's your imagination. Go visit the doctor, you need help.

P. S: just kidding, he had a bandage/heater to protect the elbow. :)
thanks for the answer !

PS: that doesn't mean i don't need to see a doctor, though

Honestly not much in my opinion.

It's all about the Slam race at this point. Beyond that, even a tournament as big as IW is more about confidence.

I predict that a #NextGen guy wins the tournament--maybe Coric or Zverev.

Nothing is on the line.

Until now both Djokovic and Nadal have been keeping appearances, because the finishing line was too far and too unclear. Now the situation is more or less cleared and the next two years everything for those three players will revolve around playing to prepare for the battles where their chances to win major silverware are the biggest.

For Djokovic that means that he proritizes HC, and then grass, and will be looking for opening on clay. He has the most chances, but also the hardest task.

For Nadal it means that spring HC season and possibly the grass season are an afterthought (he will be looking for chances on grass, should Djokovic and Federer slip, though).

For Federer it is grass, and eventually autumn HC season.

None of these guys will put much priority on M1000s, so expect a lot of new finalists and winners (even more so than the last year). The big three will play for the points, but I expect their preparation to be subpar.

Two QFs and a F/W between the three.

Djokovic: 2/3 of AO triple.
Extend point lead over Nadal by at least another 400 points, putting him at a #1 until the US Open at least.
Another title.
Momentum building even more going into clay.

I think the sunshine double are important for Djokovic and the clay season. Frankly he's the only guy who could beat Nadal on clay and properly put him down. Novak needs to be confident in his form so that he can get to Nadal in clay tournaments easily, with enough left in the tank to actually beat him.

I think it's a bit late to say Novak could save tennis, or clay season, but he could at least put this Nadal nightmare to bed.

Once Nadal's clay feet have been melted, the rest of his threat will melt away with them.

Let's be honest, this tournament alone will account for less than a single percent in the legacy of all three.
