when was the golden era of womens tennis?

IMO it was the late 90s to about mid 00s or so.

there were still graf and hingis around early on and then we had the williams sisters, henin, clijsters, davenport, capriati, a past prime but still good seles (till early 00s). also some more good players like mauresmo and the armada of soviet players (sharapova...).

after that tennis went downhill of course with very weak no. 1 players (safina, jankovic, ivanovic, woz...) but for that time I think womens tennis was really good. also womens tennis was financially booming back then and WTA players were huge media stars.

I´d say the whole 90´s, from Graf to early Serena getting through Seles,Hingis and, of course, other all time greats such as Sanchez,Fernandez,Sabatini,Davenport,Capriati,Venus,Clijsters,Martinez,Pierce,Maurismo,Kournikova and Novotna mainly

Early 80´s had tremendous potential too: Evert,Navratilova,Austin,Mandlikova and a great cast of veterans such as Goolagong,King and Wade and secondary players, some of which had won a major title like Hanika,Barker,Jausovec,Shriver,Jordan,Jaeger,Marsikova,Stevens,Bunge,Fromholtz,Turnbull,Stove,Reid and Virginia Ruzici.

Those are by far the two most competitive eras in th modern era as far as female tennis concerns.Of course, the 60´s with Court,Bueno,Jones and King had a big head but a very small body, and the same could be said about the 50´s, with Connolly,Marble,Dupont,Betz,Fry,Hart and Gibson but that was about it.

Oh dear, I don't think Kournikova belongs in that list. Even Majoli accomplished more than her.

Also, adding to your argument about the 90's and the fact that it had a stronger "body" than either today or in the 60's, I would add players like Anke Huber or Kimiko Date, who could beat just about any player when they were playing at their best.

Yes, they were.Majoli was a great player, too.Anna had top 5 potential, only that she had her mind otherwise, as you probably know.
