where do people play near Los Angeles?

Sorry I have since migrated to the land of dirt aka the Inland Empire/IE. The last time I was at CV was my last HS season in 98. lol.

-Jon

Ah, okay. I was just wondering because I met a man named Jon(John?) on Sunday at CV. Pretty generic name, but you never know..

I think I'm going to come but I just checked out the map and I'm actually kind of terrified. Next time, could we figure out where everybody is coming from and find a central location?

alright, nobody has said anything yet. Like i said, i can't actually reserve more than 1 court unless ya'll precommitt to paying the 5 bucks guest fee. since noone told me they're willing to pay i haven't reserved more than one court. so once again, theres a small, but slim, chance that not everyone will have a court, i can only guarantee one court, aka, at best i can guarantee that we have room for 2x2 doubles.

once more, the chances of all the rest of the courts being taken are almost impossible, but its possible. what's more possible is that we have enough people for seems like 3 courts. if we have 2 singles pairs and a 2 on 1 australian trio (since we have 7 right now).

it'll be more difficult to guarantee that there are 3 open courts ( i think probably more than likely there will be) but them all being right next to each other is certainly impossible since the courts are arranged in a 3 sets of 2 back to back arrangement.

here's one suggestion, pool $15 bucks and i can reserve the second court, and then at least we can guarantee everyone has a court. we can hope to find that extra one so we can have some singles as well.

heres the thing, ya'll have to get back to me saying yay or nay VERY SOON. I was hoping someone wouldda mentioned it yet but noone has. same thing im saying the first time i talked about playing here: pay up 15, or come at ur own (very low) risk.

also: i think the policy for teh GP meet was everyone bring 1 can of 3 balls? that's what im bringing anyhow.

hi guys, bad news, i just checked with the officials, they said i can't have that many people all togethor. aka, if i bring a guest, they HAVE to be on the same court as me.

we have 2 options then, risk it and hope noone cares, or probably the better option is http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=grant+park+pasadena,+ca&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=A
which is grant park. they have 2 courts there so we can at least have doubles pretty much for sure. course, it's a park so there are no reservations there.

i'm really not sure what to say to ya'll. the guy i talked to yesterday said that i could have two courts if we all paid the money, and the guy i talked to 1 week ago said the same thing. the guy for today however said no, and unfortunately hes the guy that'll be around today.

if ya'll have any alternate suggestions let me know. i know this is all sorta last minute, but i swear the guy i talked to yesterday said it was alright, as long as i was around.

This is not looking good. I'll be online and stringing rackets for a while so I'll be able to check this thread until I leave.

But any other suggestions?

the courts on cordova is the grant park i was talking about. i agree with AC about caltech. chances are, nothing bad will really happen. at worst, we get kicked off. if an angry dude shows up, i'll basicaly have to pretend i dont know the guys on the other court so that no disciplinary action is taken against me. :) . but yah im up for AC's plans, they sound perfectly reasonable. how far is CV? id be up to going there next time if its not too far.

Maybe we should meet up at Cal Tech, and move en masse someplace else (if we have to). Seems like some people might not see this thread in time.

Let's all meetup at caltech until everyone that's supposed to
be there is there and then we'll move if we have to.
If some caltech dude comes by to harrass us about the
courts, I know of some good math problems to give them to
keep them busy.

I'm back from another pleasant day of hitting with TW posters. When I left, Mellofellow and Alpine Cadet were in a battle against Momentum and friend. A lot of serves were broken today btw.

AlpineCadet, you've really improved a lot since I first saw you play.

Mellow is a pretty crafty doubles player. Everybody didn't get a chance to play each other, lets do this again soon someplace where we're not always one cranky person away from getting booted. :)

I had so much fun today, but wasn't satisfied because I didn't get a chance to hit against 35ft6. :( You forgot to mention our TTW variation of the King of Hill game, which accomodated 6 players on one court! Good fun though. Thanks everyone!!

Oh yeah... there were some good match ups... really good solid hitters.

Was a pleasure to meet the new folks. And thanks 35, being age and size challenged, crafty has its advantages. Plus I'm probably old school, aim for the shoe laces.

Ditto, had fun hitting and meeting new TW posters.

AC & Melowfellow had a good doubles match against
MomentumGT & his friend, with the latter pulling out a tough
7-6 win. I found myself watching the many exciting points they
were having instead of focusing on the set of doubles I was
playing in.

BTW, that was not a backhanded compliment. From what I saw, you were playing really solid doubles, just good fundamentals, and it's something I rarely see on public courts even if we played on college courts today. Definitely come out and play some doubles again against my weaksauce serving.

Not to brag, but AC and I were dominating the doubles version king of the hill. A bunch of grown men playing the kind of games that low budget tennis camps make kids play when there are 12 kids on one court. Just sad really. Our feeds were giving opponents fits.

Yeah, my bad. I may have gone too far on a few of my feeds. I would hit a shot near the middle of the court to setup a short CC forehand. Sorry guys. At least I didn't give them the LFF ball feeds, those would have earned me some stink-eyes from everyone.

I actually didn't notice the bad feeds. I'm not one to complain about feeds,
though. Lately, I've been hitting the worst feeds ever when hitting with
35ft6. Short topspin balls that I didn't hit hard enough, but hard enough
to just barely go over the net and barely go past the service line.

I was kidding about the feeds. Haha. I wasn't seriously suggesting there was cheating going on or anything.

The first half hour was kind of funny. Playing doubles king of the hill, nobody could get any rhythm or warm up. There were some seriously goofy points going down.

It was great finally meeting you guys and hitting a few with you all. I knew coming in that there were going to be some ballers in the group but I didn't expect the majority of the group to be able to hit big and solid. :) Definitely refreshing to have a change in hitting partners and a must do again.

Hey Mellowfellow & AC my back hurts from hitting all those serves! LOL. That was a close set and calls for a 2nd. I'm going to try some off court conditioning to get ready for the next meet.

^ I was actually scared playing doubles against you and your friend. I knew you guys could hit big and 2) haven't been playing a lot. So I thought I was going to get hit in the face at some point. And 3) I rarely play doubles so being at the net is sketchy for me.

Really?... I was trying to stick my volleys hard but you were still picking them up off the floor and returning them forcing us the UF error many times. LOL. Good play. We have to play again sometime to make the score at least respectable. LOL.

^ I don't know. It was just one of those sets where the score was lop sided but for no real apparent reason. Seemed like the play was sloppy all around but maybe we were just making less unforced errors or something. Maybe it seemed like that because I never really felt in control. Again, doubles really exposes lack of serious play. Feel like I can play around my weaknesses in singles much better. Doubles you're forced to really aim your returns... to volley and reflex volley... and I'll literally go months without serving so that sucks too.

We should all definitely play again.

Hey, next time king of the hill ought to play a 9 point tie breaker. Not sure if you youngsters ever played it but it was common in the old no-ad days.

I agree w/ 35ft6. The score may have been lopsided, but
I didn't really feel like we totally dominated. There were
definitely lots of UE's and we got lucky a few times
with reflex volleys. We probably were able to cover a bit
more of the court also. 35ft6 also plays very good defense
and is generally pretty consistent.

Best quote from the last meetup:

Alpinecadet gets out of his car and the first thing out of this
mouth is:

"Hey, 35ft6, how much do you bench press?"

btw, how much do you bench?

Are you still enjoying my random question to 35ft6? I only asked him because I saw that protein mix/container in his bag and was just curious since he's a huge guy. If I had known any better, I would have lead off with, "Hey, I'm about to put my foot in my mouth for asking this question, but..." I didn't mean anything by it, was just wondering out loud, lol.

BTW, that wasn't the first thing I said to you guys, lol. Thanks for reminding me about that, though!

Okay, but I didn't think it was funny at all. I was serious when I asked it, but didn't mean to startle you with it. Not sure why it's even being talked about.

Seriously, I didn't think it was that weird. Especially since you saw the protein powder in my bag. People always overestimate how strong I am.
