When played, National Anthems in football matches are played before the matches, opposite to tennis, where they are played after the matches.
Can somebody tell why is this?

I think the simple answer is they serve different purposes based on the context. With team sports played in a certain country no team represents a certain country because members are from all over the world. The anthem then becomes simply a display of patriotism and respect towards the country from the fans and the organising body, both of whom are natives of the country, and can be played at any time.

In individual sports athletes of two different countries (most of the time) face off against each other and the national anthem now serves as a celebratory tune for the athlete's victory and ability to bring glory to his/her home country. And since it's celebratory we have to wait till after the outcome is decided.

Slingerlaand has a nice anthem - no (official) words and the only one to include a drum solo.

I also would tip my cap to Canada: America's hat.

First of all national anthems should not have words.
Next, why not have just one anthem for the word?
What might that be?
They should all rather have an international version in English, so everybody can understand what they are talking about.
