Which of the 3 of Sam Querrey, John Isner, or Donald Young, do you think will end up having the best career? I think it will be Querrey.

I picked Isner simply because his serve will keep him in the top 100 and keep him competitive in most matches. Also because of his nerves of steel and his ever improving ground game.

Unfortunately for Isner, his major weapon is also his hinderance. He has to find a way to strengthen his back and bend his knees to get lower when returning low shots. Also, big guys' knees tend to give out only a few years into their careers. I think Young has more staying power and will be more consistant while Isner will most likely be a flash in the pan the next couple of years and then fizzle away.

Hard to say. They could all make reasonable pro careers. Querrey already has a rounded game, and it's giving him results; a QF in a TMS is pretty good, and he can still improve. Isner's serve is a monster, and his groundstrokes look like they still have a LOT of room to improve - not just in the fact that they're not that great, but in that he really has the potential to make them better and make them into real weapons. DY has a complete package, but not yet enough power off the ground to make inroads on the top players consistently.

Really, it'll be a question of which one can improve their weaknesses the most. Querrey's progressed the furthest right now, already in the top 50, but it's still to be seen whether he'll end up a Spadea or Fish (brief stint in the top 20 if he's lucky, much time spent above 50 but below 20) or whether he can make the transition to being a top 10 player like Blake did. Isner can make the top 50 with what he's got right now; DY's game right now looks to be top 100 material but not yet better than that. They both, however, have plenty of room for improvement and are indeed improving, so can't write them off yet.

In summary, I don't know :) and if I had to guess... right now I'd guess Querrey.

That's a good question. I think Isner could go further because of his game, great serve, good start on forehand, if he can improve movement, and perhaps motivation. I think with his current attitude, he may be around a while, but competitiveness before something else in life becomes overly distracting? One doesn't know. I just watched Querrey for the first time the other day, I wasn't very impressed, but everyone can have their off days. Young may be around longest because he seems to have drive and just something about him where he feels he has something to prove. Therefore I guess I would say Querrey, balanced in the middle.

On today's performance it has to be Young. Isner has no return game and relies heavily on his serve. At least Young can engage in long rallies and construct points. Isner is far too dependent on serve and once the rally begins his chances decrease against a good basliner. I can see a better future for Young if he contines to develop. However, Isner is better than Young at this stage of their career simply beacuse he has two outstanding weapons; serve and forehand.

I am surprised Querrey does not have more votes. I know he performed the worst of the 3 at this U.S Open, but I still think he is the best when he is on of these 3.

Isner took a set off the #1 player in the world and for awhile scared the crap out of him.

Federer would probably triple bagel Young if they played.

I don't see how you think Young will be better, especially on a surface like the USO.

I agree wholeheartedly. Took a set off The Man on a huge stage and played very well. Isner had berries of solid granite today. Nice serve, good nerves, decent groundies...that's a combo for success in today's game.

Querry.

Isner is great on hardcourt, but i think he'll suffer on clay.

young is great and all, but IMO i think Querry has something mentally that Young seems to be lacking.

On the day of September 5th, 2008 the votes were as follows:

37 votes for Young
24 for Isner
16 for Querrey

Just want to confirm that before some any new votes come in.

Much has changed since this poll was launched last August. Querry has had very good results since then, and the others haven't done much. I think results would be different if a fresh poll were posted today.

I guess it is just funny to see how much things can change in one year, especialy with these youngsters. I was one of the ones who voted for Querrey initialy though and found him being underrated compared to the other two in the first place, one reason I created this poll just to get an idea where people stood. Granted I am not sure I thought the gap would be as huge as it is now, but Querrey hasnt done any better then I thought he could, the other two just worse then I expected, especialy Isner.

I find Isner and Young to be curious contrasts. The first is one dimensional, the other is multi dimensional, yet they have fared equally poorly on tour.

One does alot of things well, but nothing great, and lacks significantly in overall firepower and the mental side of the game. Of course the other is only a great serve.
