I remember those times as well. :)

It's funny though, now with HD and YouTube in retrospect I wonder how I could ever have tolerated watching games on some old TV set where you sometimes hardly could see the ball. :)

I feel kind of nostalgic when I watch these clips. That era with Borg, Connors, McEnroe, Vilas, Gerulaitis, Tanner,.....the variety of strokes and players, the uniqueness of characters, how beautiful wood tennis was....here just some pieces:

I was a big Borg fan growing up, but watching that I really have to give it up for Tanner! Vicious serve, with that quick motion, and with a racket that would be considered a toy today! And for a big guy (who maybe was carrying a few extra pounds) he was pretty quick and covered the court damn well.

Those players sure knew how to volley, and come in and finish points back then!

Great stuff - nice post!

Here is Lance Tingay description of the Tanner saving three mp and getting stuck to it
" and when the guy from Tenessee put aside his three dead sentences, the mighty arm of Borg started shivering like it had never before"
Just glorious days

I can imagine the young generations rolling their eyes and thinking "not again this endless dwelling on the past, please no, we heard it already 20 times".

Every generation will have its "golden era", the time where "everything was better". It just shifts in time for each generation.

What match is this that Tingay is referring to?

1979 Wimbledon final?
