Legend
Who was the best among these three players of the 70s:
Tanner, Gerulaitis or Panatta?

MAJORS:
Panatta 1 RG
Tanner 0 (Australian was a Master1000 to late 70s...)
Gerulaitis 0 (Australian was a Master1000 to late 70s...)
Placings in the semi and finals best for Vitas (final US OPEN) and Roscoe (final W).

BIG TITLES NO-MAJORS
Panatta wins Stockholm (final beats Connors) and Rome.
Tanner wins Las Vegas, Palm Springs and Philadelphia
Gerulaitis wins Toronto 1982 (final beats Lendl) Masters Dallas and 2 times, Rome

H2H
I have not found much information.
Remember Gerulaitis won almost always against Tanner, but a memory.

Against the major
Gerulaits always lost against Borg. Connors lost ever since 1980.
Panatta was lethal to Borg.
Connors suffered but won almost always suffering.
Tanner tapped sometimes Connors (for example 76 W) and Borg (eg US Open 79).

My list is:
1) Gerulaitis
2) Tanner
3) Panatta

The main reason is that Panatta was more complete than the other two, and from September 1975 to September 1976 was close to Connors and Borg.
Gerulaitis and Tanner have never been so close but have been more consistent.
I choose Gerulaitis because it was more continuous and more hard in Maters GP and WCT. For just then.

That is exactly my seeding order for the 70´s (12 Gerulaitis 13 Tanner 14 Panatta)

They are changeable but Panatta was never consistent.Tanner and Gerulaitis were a bit more consistent.

The three won a DC title although Tanner lost his match.Gerulaitis beat Panatta at San Francisco but Panatta had beaten Vitas at the Italian Open in 1978.Would be great to have a HtH between Panatta and Tanner , Tanner and Gerulaitis, Gerulaitis and Panatta.

Tanner beat Panatta at 1979 WCT Houston; Vitas beat Roscoe at USO that same year. But I don´t know their full results.

I disagree with Gerulaitis not winning a major as the WCT title was clearly a major when Vitas won it.And he also won the WCT Tournament of Champions in 1980 which I clearly consider a " non major big title" by all means.Oh¡¡ and he won 1982 Johannesburg, which was the best hard court event outside the US Open in the 1982 season ( look at the draw¡¡¡)

OTOH Tanner had the toughest AO of the 70´s: Fleming,Teacher,Rosewall,Vilas.I would make an exception for that Australian as his path was so strong.Clearly tougher than Borg´s at 1978 Wimbledon for example, in fact, quite tougher (Nastase and OKker were old farts in 1978)
