Why were the New Yorkers booing Djokovic at the end of the match?

We have just examined the end of match video.

The annoying dunderhead announcer Mary Carillo claims the fans are yelling "Ruuuune!". Nonsense. That is NOT what happens at the end of a match. Those are mostly boos against the victorious Djoker.

You can even see the hurt in Djoker's face when he heard the boos.

Raul, Mary Carillo is a native New Yorker and she herself knows that the fans were affectionately giving the kid supportive props by calling out his last name. It is e.g. the EXACT SAME THING with the NY Yankees when current Yankee Luke Voit does something good - you hear what sounds like boooing but what is in fact an elongated "Luuuuuke!" (was the same thing with 'sweet' Louuuu Piniella).

The booing interpretation is waaaay off the mark.

Been to Shea Stadium (when Yanks played there) and heard Louuuu. This practice probably originated, or was at least first widely popularized, in NY, by Sweet Lou, correct?

Do not recall any baseball players before that... Buffalo Bills fans might have been doing it a bit in 1972 with "Juice" (our favourite murderous O.J.).

In any event, it is not typical to do it at the end of the match. Fans will "Ruuu" during the match but the end of the match is reserved for the winner. Fans typically cheer the victor. Hence the pained expression on Djoker's face as he walks off the court.

Again Rual, it's a misinterpretation by Djoko and others who didn't realize the crowd was simply giving the kid some supportive "nice try" props. It was not booing by any stretch of the imagination - simply a 'way to go kid - too bad about your cramps' affectionate send off. You watch: Djoko will get his 'love' as well and even if he's not the overwhelming crowd favorite (e.g. @Wimbledon vs. Federer) he'll survive - he didn't get to where he is by being a hypersensitive wallflower. He's a Serb; he can handle it. Now: if he were playing a Croatian and they did it...lol. Yes fans cheer the victor but they also (in certain circumstances) give the valiant loser a rousing send off as consolation.

Buffalo Bills/O.J. : maybe they did cheer "Juuuice" but I wouldn't know - I've never been a member of the Bills mafia and I've made it a point to avoid that Empire State mistake-by-the-lake.

If it comes down to a Semi Final against the unlikable Zverev (the alleged DV abuser) the NYC crowd might be 60-40 either way. Depending on how many of them wish to witness CYGS history.

But ultimately irrelevant as Djoker feeds off of the negative energy.

The Djokovic-Zverev popularity contest will come when it comes (if it comes). At that time I can guarantee you one thing: that if one player jumps out to a 2 sets to love lead, the crowd will assuredly pull for the losing player no matter whom it is, i.e. they'll want to get their money's worth by witnessing a competitive match. As for Zverev's DV issues, I can also guarantee that at best 1 out of 10 fans in attendance would even be aware of any DV rumors, etc.

60/40....50/50..... 51/49......95/5.......who really cares and why should this be an issue? Me, I'd like to see tennis history being made. But it really comes down to the chair umpire: "players ready?...play" ...... and from there sitting back to enjoy a hopefully very well-played, competitive match.

Now if they were NY Ranger fans you might hear a rhythmic chant emanating from the upper rafters:
"Beat yer wife Zverev, beat yer wife!" clap-clap "Beat yer wife Zverev, beat yer wife!" clap-clap **

I am not a Nole fan but did not care for the applause after faults during his service games.

I have seen hundreds, if not thousands, of matches from high school, through college, USTA league, and various levels of professional from Futures to Grand Slams. Almost every match has had at least one clueless fan in the crowd that doesn't have any etiquette that cheers service faults and unforced errors. It's irritating, but certainly not something that only happens to Djokovic.

I'm sure we've both seen matches where the crowd was openly hostile to a player, especially in college or the old Davis Cup settings. And I know we've both seen Djokovic matches where the crowd was really going for his opponent, especially when he was playing Fed or Nadal. The crowd last night was not hostile. It was a pretty ordinary match... and quite boring for most of it. Therefore, in my opinion, this whole thing is being overblown. But if Novak needs to have a persecution complex to win the CYGS, that's fine. He's not my favorite player by far, but I really want him to win this US Open.

9 out of 10 fans not even aware of the allegations.
Bad news for Bart's favourite columnist Ben Rothenberg.
You're right. At the same time, you were the one who brought Zverev's DV rumors into a hypothetical djoko-zverev match.

Raul, this is not a hill worth dying on - let's move on.

Come on its not that hard to figure out... They were chanting Ruuuuune as he was leaving the court. It was a show of respect for staying out there and leaving it all out on the court, against all odds...

Yet for some reason ya'll still gonna lose sleep over this
See I feel even as a Djokovic does too much to be loved and feel he shouldn’t care. I as a fan don’t I love when the crowd are against him and he silences them it’s majestic. I feel some of his fans on here care too much about crowds reaction too him.

Not a Zverev basher. Like him. Was not even aware of the allegations until posts here. He is presumed innocent.

But according to this board, there needs to be an immediate ATP inquiry and Zverev reprimand. ATP allowing Zverev to be the face of tennis would be devastating to the popularity of the sport. Posters say ATP needs to get ahead of it just like the NFL does -- even before any criminal findings. But as you say, at this point, people are not aware of it.

That was Djokovic's 61st straight Slam opening round win. Federer has the record at 65.

Questions: who was the only player to beat Djokovic at Slam opening match; and who stopped Roger at 65.
