Will Novak win all 4 slams in 2021? This might the most monumental year in tennis history since Rod Laver's time.

Think we have to wait until Sunday's result to seriously talk about it. 3 seems possible but 4 seems too tall an ask. I really think the USO is probably getting a new champion again. Which will then kick off the "Is the Next Gen taking over?" only for Djokovic to win the AO a few months later again

Book the Sunday win. It is more certain than the sun rising.
Titspas is a midget in his first slam facing the GOAT.
He won't win a set.

I like Steve but I think you are prescient. Not Steve’s time yet. Djoker couldn’t be more motivated than to bag another RG after coming through clay-GOAT.

Don't disagree but if it doesn't work out don't say I didn't warn you..
I know. But if that doesn't happen it will be the biggest upset in tennis history since the game started. Titspas was crying in the SF and that's his limit. First slam final and no one wins against the GOAT.

The first SF and 2nd SF were like different sports. First was a game of amateurs. The second was real top pros.

Let me ask you this. Who will win UsOpen?
Thiem is AWOL.
Titspas and Medvedev have been mugs at slam level.
Zedzilla is 0-11 at slam level.
So how does Novak lose UsOpen exactly?

No one has ever won the French Open after defeating Rafa.

Tsits absolutely bludgeoned Medvedev, don't forget.
No one also best Nadal in RG SF.
This is a time of firsts.
Do you honestly think a mug like Titspas beats Novak when the clay GOAT could not?
Let's be serious here.

I don't consider Tsitsipas and Medvedev mugs on HC. I think they're very close to breaking through. Djokovic at the USO isn't Djokovic at the AO and Tsitsipas has slowly been honing his game on HC. Medvedev was punchless in the final of AO no doubt but maybe in an earlier round with less pressure he can perform. Djokovic is not infallible. At his age it isn't difficult to get a small injury that can compromise your whole tournament. It almost happened in the Fritz match and Zverev honestly gave Djokovic a good match at the AO as well.

Asking Djokovic to win all 4 is unrealistic to me at the moment. Like I said, he's got to win Sunday first to even kickstart this discussion.

Let him win the FO first on Sunday. He will be a heavy favorite at Wimbledon also. But, the slow hard courts at the USO and the NY humidity are a great equalizer and any of the top five players (Nadal, Medvedev, Thiem, Tsitsipas, Zverev) can beat him especially if he feels the pressure of reaching a CYGS.

I don’t think winning on Sunday is a given especially if he has an emotional down after winning against Nadal.

Titspas is 5-7 on tour finals. Most of them were 250 level.
His record is pathetic even at non slams.
He chokes more often than not and is a bit mental midget.
You think he will beat the GOAT in his first slam final, when Nadal a 100x superior could not do it?

So far Titspas has shown nothing in his career which shows he can handle nerves in any major event finals. Him beating Novak in a slam final is as close to impossible as it gets. Especially his first one.

it is still a gigantic task, even for earth's mightiest warrior........
It is. But who can stop him.
It was always Nadal who stopped Fed before and Novak as well.
Now however Novak conquered Nadal at RG. That is the hardest thing in tennis and all sports really.

Also Nadal lost today, yeah it's a tough blow. But the guy didn't pass away. Last I checked he will still be entering these events. He gets that SP in the 3rd and he probably wins today. Let's not go writing Nadal's obituary yet. He does very very well at the US Open as of late. He will be hungry to avenge this loss today. Bury RAFA at your own peril.

things change fast in tennis........the pressure from now on will be on djokovic as he is the one who is expected to sweep the rest of the season........i still don't think he is a lock anywhere but in australia.........let him win against tsitsipas first tomorrow, tsitsipas has the game to rattle djokovic........

I’m only asking for three more at this point.:giggle:

Well just like Rafa didn't die today, it's not like Djokovic's clock will suddenly expire at the end of the year either. So even if he doesn't CYGS or even win 3 slams, he's got a few years left minimum to keep trying to win.

The field is not catching up fast enough relative to Nadal/Djokovic declining enough to be consistently beaten.

TTW seems to lack patience. These guys have a fair few majors appearances left in them yet. TTW seems to always want to bury any player that doesn't win a slam.

Anyone ever thought that 2008 would be the last slam by Venus Williams. And 2017 AO was last by Serena when she was so dominant.

Father time waits for no one. Nadal cannot last more than 3 hours on court. Unless he gets really really lucky it's hard for him to win any slam. He is 36 next year and no one wins on clay at that age.

He needs to use the momentum of reaching the number 1 record to peak only at slams.

I’m not sure what you’re saying but the top players all try to peak at the slams. And The Big 3 are only playing for slams apart from maybe a sentimental tournament or their own thing (e.g., Laver Cup) but even then you are never getting their “A game” other than at a slam.

I picked Djokovic to win today from the rip but I also don't think Nadal is done yet. Just 24 hours ago he was 'NID' to win the French to the vast majority and now people want to put him in a casket and float him down the river. Well, let's be pragmatic and find the middle ground of 'NID' and 'Floating him down the river'.

Probably not, but if we're operating on the assumption that Djokovic wins RG (which isn't a given), then I'd say he's a 40% favorite at the US Open. It's more likely to me that he wins Wimbledon, but a shock upset wouldn't surprise me much either.

Most likely 3 slams this year, followed closely by 2 slams, then 4, then 1.

Reaching that record took a load off his head and proved he can break the records to become the Goat. That is a huge confidence booster and even if someone else gets n1 he will not bother because the slam record is the only focus now.

Tennis is a mental war and Novak is proving it.

Yeah it’s a bit ridiculous. And people need to understand that the psychology of the situation, with three players fighting for the most slams, really favours the Big 3 - they are fighting way harder than if there was only one of them playing and already holding the record.

He can certainly win on clay at that age against anyone! I’m so happy Novak won but Rafa will be trying to fix his serve for next year - if he does that he should win again. It really let him down, stopping him from getting enough forehands.

Just because something happened before it will happen again.

You are a fairly good poster and have seen matches from the days of Pete Sampras. Yet you post sily threads. Here in TTW, a match thread was created before 2011 RG final titled Novak Djokovic v Rafa Nadal final. We know what happened. In 2015 , people handed over the title to Novak Djokovic after beating Rafa, we all know what happened next. Matches are played for a reason. Novak Djokovic is not Rafa at French Open. He has lost to three different players other than Rafa at RG after 2014 RG. His opponent Stefanos took him to five sets in RG 2020 and to three sets in Rome 2021. And yet you act like Stefanos has no chance.

Not including one slam in the poll and acting as if he has already won RG is also very much disrespectful to Stefanos as a player.

Either way it's a good story line.

Either Eggvax hits 20 with a live CYGS or Steve breaks through for NextGen. With respect to Thiem it's not the same thing avoiding The Big 2. I like Steve but I strongly prefer the live CYGS and Steve should have a lot more chances.

Good post. Added to the poll options.
I must warn you. You are belaboring the obvious. On Sunday Novak will be 2 away from CYGS.

We were in the same place exactly ten years ago, when Djoke had that same chance in 2011 for the first time.

The fact that the tour has been in the same place for 10 years straight says something about the sad reality of it all, and while back then it was only natural that at some point Djokovic might put his fingers in the distribution of the big titles and accolades, the fact that the only ones that has consistently been at it as his competition are ancient Federer, and his other older generational rival is a testament to the situation we are witnessing.

Now to the point: this situation has been in the making for quite some time.

Djokovic has won the Australian Open - Wimbledon double in 2011, 2015 and 2019. In fact, it is a small wonder that he failed several times to even get close to it. We all remember why in 2011. In 2015 the most unlikely thing happened. In 2019 he fell to a player that is clearly not what he was touted to be, which brings us to the present situation, which shares a few similarities with the time of Laver's CYGS. Back then Rosewall was the obstacle in front of Laver's CYGS. In 1968 he lost to Rosewall at the FO, similarly how Djoke lost to Nadal at RG 2020. Next year the CYGS happened after Laver finally defeating Ken there, similarly to how it happened just now.

The other aspect of it was that at the time of the Laver's CYGS we had very similar situation, with Laver basically being the leading player of his generation, his greatest rival at one of the Majors being 4 years older than him (similarly to how Federer is 6 years older than Djoke).

Also similarly to now, there was a big gap in talent from the up and coming players. The more talented Newk and Roche were 6 and 7 years younger than Laver. Roche ended up something like Thiem is today (talking about singles only), whereas Newk went on to achieve great things. Today the gap is even more pronounced: the difference in age between the tomorrow finalists is the mind boggling 11 years! Stefanos is in his first final ever, which means that he still isn't up to the challenge to be a consistent threat to the top dogs yet. This is how big the gap has been.

The Tour will be forced to change if it is to go places from the current sad situation, and something like this can actually speed up that change. Yesterday's decision to leave the spectators, while being good for the match and the spectators, shows how serious strings are being pulled to ensure the Majors race and the preferential treatment of the Big 3.
