Will someone make tennis exciting again?

Well, after a pretty darn exciting and unpredictable 2014, we got one exceptionally boring season of tennis. The most dull since 2006. It was great to see Djokovic rising to a historic season remembering how he used to be a scrawny kid kicking tennis balls into his own pocket on tour, but like 2006, it doesn't matter how good the front-runner is, the tennis season is incredibly boring. This is not to assign blame to anyone - it's no more Djokovic's fault than it is the rest of the tour, but it's hard to stay invested as a non-fanboy next year if this is what we are to expect. This was the fear with Federer, but we did have Nadal waiting in the wings, edging closer and closer.

With Djokovic out in front and no clear second, I think we will need a new face to surge ahead to save next season. Kyrgios maybe? He seems primed for another ranking surge. Will things fall in place for Kevin Anderson? A Raonic comeback?

Federer and Novak have played some exciting matches this season.

I firmly believe that in 2016 you will see a surprise guy gain momentum as Fedal completely drop off.

Can't see it being kygrios. But I'm watching Coric, Kok, Anderson and to a lesser extent Raonic.

You know what?
I'm downloading and watching the final anyway to see how awesome Djoker must have been to beat Fed 6-3 6-4.

I'm not going to have Novak's "fans" ruin Djokovic for me just because of their trolling.
Later guys.

Tennis is boring, because it has become so predictable; and it is so predictable because one guy is just on another planet compared to the rest of the field. Tennis will become more exciting when the level of the playing field will be more even and there will be more unpredictability. I don't know when that willl happen though, hopefully in early 2016 already.

Fed is 34 years old Murray is not an all time great and there seems to be no one in young generation what we have is Rafa like it or not.He can still ask the question to Novak on outdoors outside of grass.

Just like 2006, though, it's probably not going to lead to several years of blanket domination. There are fellow legends, inconsistent kingslayers, and young talents milling about, as there always are. I've thoroughly enjoyed Novak's year as his fan, as well as Stan's singular moment of god-level tennis, but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. But tennis is a dynamic sport. For all we know, someone we don't quite notice now will emerge as Djokovic's primary threat over the next few years, and maybe that will push him to even greater excellence and/or maybe we'll discover a new ATG in the making. That's one of the joys of tennis. :)

Just like 2006? Are you serious with this comparison?

Nothing lasts forever, one day this time will pass also. Federer had his time at the top, Nadal had his time at the top, Djokovic currently having his time at the top...but just like those two incredible legends before him, Djokovic's time will come to an end. Someone always comes up.

Tennis needs another 2012 season with:

Murray to win AO
Djokovic to pummel Wawrinka to win Career GS at French
Rafa to win Wimbledon beating Federer
Tsonga to win Olympics
Federer to sail into the sunset with USO win

Federer is stubborn as a mule. Another slam win would only convince him that he should stick around even longer, imo. Tennis needs him right now in any event - at his highest level or not he is one of the few intrigues on tour.

Unless Djokovic loses form drastically, which would probably be the product of either injury or loss of interest (a la Wilander in 1989), the only realistic challenger in 2016 is obviously Nadal. Murray might be able to make it a little closer but Djokovic would still likely have an edge on him. By 2017, perhaps someone like Kyrgios could threaten more. But I think the young guns are all a year away. I just don't think it's reasonable to expect someone to go from outside the top 20 to challenging an ATG for #1. Even in 2005, Nadal was still way behind Federer overall, even though he was clear #2. And I don't think any of the youngsters has either the potential that Nadal had or the clear surface advantage over Djokovic that Nadal had over Federer on clay.

In the particular case of Kyrgios, he might be closer to challenging if he hadn't got so distracted by his behavioral issues this year. I think they have really held back his development.

Coric is just too young and raw, still.

Kyrgios is interesting, albeit a one-dimensional and total a-hole.

Anderson will never be relevant.

Raonic is beyond boring and is another Kei-- eternally injured.

Best bet is to get a time machine and dial it back to 1989: Edberg and Chang at the FO, Lendl still pegged to win another 5 majors, Pete on the horizon, Andre too, Edberg nearly getting a major on clay... Becker...

No comparison to today. A better era to live and a better time to be alive, period.

i think RAFA will make tennis exciting again in 2016 by winning 3 of the 4 majors and becoming #1

Well said, as that would be the most boring scenario imaginable, excellent, and improbable as in ZERO CHANCE at that.

Nadal's time is in the past, not the present, which right now belongs to Nole.

And why did you write rafa in all caps?

Just need a greater variety of court speeds. I always enjoy watching Cincy, for that reason. Same with Wimbledon. O2 Arena just too slow for me to enjoy it.. regardless of the outcome.

RAFA topspin is most exciting thing to come along in tennis ever in history of tennis... so you better hope he is #1 again in 2016

PLease EXPLAIN how the rafa topspin would be so exciting for you.

Those wasted spins hit from over 5 feet height are especially useless, ugly, and a waste of precious energy.

Aww.. That made me emotional.

Pretty much all the courts are slow, which again, greatly benefits Faker's terrible to watch game. So unless they change that, we will probably have to endure for another couple years. He will definitely decline next year though.
