Wilson 6.1 future

I hope Wilson brings back the 6.1 soon because as a long time 6.1 user, I'm not liking any of the new Wilson's. Big mistake by Wilson in discontinuing a classic model in their lineup. I recently started playing again and was looking for the new 6.1 but was surprised to see that it's been discontinued so I tried out the RF97 and the Pro Staff 97 which I was told the replacement. What a disappointment. The 6.1 was the only reason I stuck with Wilson all these years, guess I'm going to have to check out offerings from other manufacturers.

Haha yes, the K6.1 was actually my favorite racquet and hopefully he can push Wilson to bring it or something similar back.

Yeah I actually found one in my size but it looks a bit beat up. Will keep looking for a better one but in the meantime are you listening Wilson? Will need to find a few in decent condition but I hope Wilson brings it back by next year. It's ridiculous because I still see the 6.1 everywhere at my local club and college campuses used by Div 1 players yet they abandoned it?

I hear you but I don't see it happening. Makes no sense to me either, such a classic great line.

What is interesting though is TW got in more of the 6.1 95S but maybe those were left overs from a production run?

They should bring one of the 90s back.
I think every maker should just keep producing a few of the more popular/classic frames forever.

If you can only play with the 6.1 line then consider your days with Wilson sticks over. Truth or not, new is better in the modern society. With thousands of new players entering the market each year, why would Wilson want to sell these older models that are not a good anymore? If you are the Wilson CEO, would you want to cater to some old rec farts that play once maybe twice a week?

There are up coming youngsters plus many pros are still using it under prostaff 97 PJ and more than anything this Wilson 6.1 would suit better to juniors to develop their games and weapons.I go around with my son to 16 and 18yr old junior tournaments in US and I don't see any of the new so called Wilson racquets at all so in a way it's already proven current models aren't successful either.

I've started seeing juniors using the new Blade 2015 models and that is only positive sign. There were hardly any kids using RF97 or Prostaff 97 out of 1000 plus kids playing in one of the major tournaments in my state.

I resonate with everything you're saying. Check out some of the tribute threads we've got going on right now:

I like to see it also...
I truly bet Wilson ( Amer Sports) is focused on catching other fast money making fish...
6.1 would be a minnow in the scheme of things for them..
Don't think, they would invest into another line.
Plus really, I they would do is slap some new ugly paint on it and boom....219 or more $.....maybe a signature / autographed edition
But remember...they can't take away your dreams.
Buy a few extra the old 6.1 95's ...and close the thread...

we want new 6.1's with the new vibration dampening tech. Other than Precor, I don't see another line of business in their portfolio with more clout and annual revenue..

The 6.1 95S is tempting me at that price. I had one a few years ago but moved on due to some discomfort in my elbow. I really liked it, gave very nice spin and control. Also I seemed to volley really well with it also.

Anyone have that issue that used it?

Actually, old farts are the one with the buying power....just saying....

I don't think Wilson dropped the 6.1 line because new tech is better.

I think Wilson dropped the line because new tech is cheaper to make.

When you play these old farts frames as some put it, you are rewarded with some of the best feeling frames ever. Frames that carry some heft that today's young players, used to playing with ipods, will find too heavy to use. Frames that top players still use under those new frames PJ.

Thankfully Angell still makes these kind of frames. And hopefully, maybe Wilson will bring back the 6.1 one day.

Wilson still makes this kind of racquet, the RF 97. Rock solid just like the 6.1 even better imo if you can handle the weight.

I agree but I still have my 6.1classic and I still prefer it to the RF I tried. In a way the RF is the new 6.1 but without the foam filled frame.

Unfortunately Wilson could careless about the future of the 6.1. The will be pushing soft goods (apparel, shoes,etc..) , they are consumables which has shown to lave the largest area of growth and profit. But maybe you might be lucky and see six.one underwear, socks, shoes, shorts, and sport bras( for the old guys).....Maybe you will see these follow a similar marketing path. Like black out overpriced wilson undies signed by (& co-designed) RF (w/ a special letter - designed with your tennis BALLS in mind) or an autographed sport bra designed and signed by Serena. Who knows....exciting stuff....

Right...and Head should stop making the Radical and Prestige lines.

You do realize how popular the 6.1 line was even when they decided to end it, right? And the number of YOUNG pros who use the 6.1 under a paint job? Shapovalov is 17 and probably one of the best new hopes for tennis and he uses a 6.1 under a PS97 paint job. The greatness of the 6.1 line isn't lost on youth.

National big auction site has the white/red 2013 (I think) 6.1s for around $80 USD new with stringjob and shipping included. I might actually click that buy button.

Wilson won't bring back the 6.1 anytime soon since it will take away some sales of their current PS97 line. And they wouldn't be able to upcharge the 6.1 line as they can with the PS97.

Then why not bring it back in a limited release to select retails (TW, MWS, TE, etc). You could make a fortune if marketed properly as the "ultimate player's frame"

Like TW did it for PS85, when it came back, it was a best seller. But after a couple months, it died down, I'm sure you remembered that. Also, not many, if any pros are using the 6.1 90, sales probably wouldn't be that great. If only a few of us are willing to fork out the cash, they wouldn't do it for such a low demand.

Right, but if it's marketed effectively, it could totally work. I think it's all about marketing tactics, personally.

Absolutely! And now, they want to market their newest and latest PS97...

I remember when they were marketing the PS88. They tried so hard to push the legacy thing and it worked. Those things were backordered for weeks. All they have to do is commit to being true to their roots and producing classic, player frames.

What ever happened to the Wilson Tour and Open lines? Those headsizes were more manageable then the 90/95's, but still were quality frames. I know Kei still plays with a custom mould of the nCode nTour:

Instead, do this. Buy a Volkl SG 10 295. Put 2 to 6 grams of lead tape under the bumper in long strips centered at noon to get your desired SW. Put 4 grams on the handle pallet approximately 7" from the butt end. Then put strips around the handle pallet starting from just above the butt cap and continuing up the pallet until you get to your desired balance _ I have roughly 9 to 12 g wrapped around the pallet to get to almost 7HL. You will end up with a racket with grip, overgrip and vibration dampener that weighs between 12 oz and 12.4 oz depending on SW and balance. It will be reminiscent of a 6.1 but with a slightly more comfortable muted feel. I played the 6.1 BLX for awhile but have been tweaking the Volkl O10 and SG10 295 frames for last few years and I like it better.

I think the it's unlikely to happen. The trend has already gone to Babolat's hollow, powerful, lightweight frame as you can see in all the clubs. In order for Wilson to compete against Babolat, change of the line is inevitable. I am not saying Pro Staff is old school, but part of it is.

In South America you sell any used 6.1 95 and you are offered only half the price you could get selling your used Babolats.

People is so stupid here
