Wilson Sensation

Getting a new racket for my GF and am wonderig what to string it with. She isn't a "big hitter" and she hits pretty flat most of the time (trying to help her use some spin). I want something thats easy on the arm and durable (I know that is hard to find in multifilament). But, I heard that Wilson Sensation 16 is easy on the arm and more durable then other multi-filaments cause of the polyester coating. Is this true or should I look at something else? She'll be playing about 1-3 hours a week and she is getting a Wilson W6.

I was thinking maybe a hybrid of polyester and multifilament as well, but I'm really not sure.

Thanks

Sensation doesn't have a "polyester coating", whatever that would be. And, as one of the older multis out there now, it certainly isn't considered durable. If she doesn't break string every other day or so, it's also not necessary to do polyester. You should just get her "W" stick strung with Wilson's Reflection, which is even meant to pair with one. Here: http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/descpageACWILSON-WRSTR.html

Should you find you need something with a little more "spine" to it, then go for Tecnifibre's Multifeel too.

I guess I was talking about the Wilson Sensation NXT with the polyurethane coating... Yeah my GF has never broken a string, so you think Reflection is okay? I want it to be durable enough so that we can play 1-3 hours per week and change string 2-3 times a year tops.

Okay so would Wilson Reflection string be a better option? Remeber my GF is not a ''big hitter'' by any means, she is 5'3 115lbs.

However, she is pretty good at chasing down balls and she is good at shot placement.

She was complaining about elbow pain the other day... But, her current racket is crap and the grip is way too small (junior size) so I think that may have a roll in it. However, she doesn't want to be sidelined by arm pain, so she wants something easy on the arm and good for control without sacrificing a crap load of durability.

Why don't you try a gut or gut hybrid if you only string 2-3 times a year unless the cost is prohibiting.

I don't think she should use a junior racquet though, its too light & short.

That's why she is getting a Wilson W6 red crimson (she plays better on a non-OS head).... Her junior racket is weird though because it is heavy and has a small head size (it is super old though).

I guess we could try gut, but that is pretty expensive. I read some reviews on the Reflection string and seems that some people find the string great and others break it fast. On account of the fact that my GF isn't very strong and we only play 1-3 hours a week, I think I'll string it with reflection and see how it goes.

Wilson Sensation vs. PSGD??

What's your opinion about these two strings compared against each other (17 gauge)?

I took one of my racquets to my local tennis club to be restrung. I asked for PSGD, but the stringer put in Sensation 17g instead, and said "I think you'll really like this string."

Should I take it back and say "no way, give me what I asked for"? Or is Sensation a better string?

Sensation is horrible....just go with a good syn gut like Gosen OG Micro or Prince Synthetic Gut Duraflex...they should be fine for your GF..both very good strings.

Same thing happened when I bought my racquet. Only to find out that it dies so quickly. At least mine was free. I bet the stringers are pushing Sensation on people because nobody likes that string. It plays OK fresh but it only lasted 4 hours of play before feeling dead.

i used the sensation duo hybrid, with the sensation as the mains and i didn't like it. it doesn't have a lot of power. and i felt that my sweetspot was decreased and felt as if my racquet is dead. but i guess, it is descent enough considering the performance that the price can offer.

sensation is mediocre at best. if your girl friend is only playing 3 hours a week tops and is a beginner i don't think durability will be much of an issue. psgd, gosen og micro would be good enough imo.

Sensation is NOT a bad string. For a really hard hitter, a heavy topspin hitter, it probably isn't appropriate. But, for a female who doesn't fall into one of those categories, I think she'll like the feel of Sensation. And surprisingly, the last RSI issue rated it as one of the better tension holding multi's out there.

I play with the Wilson W6. In the past I have had issues with tennis elbow. I have one strung with natural gut 17 ga at 55 lbs. and never have a problem with my elbow. The second one I have strung with NXT Tour 17 ga. same 55 lbs. If there is any question about the weather I use it. The NXT Tour does not really last any longer than the gut but it is less expensive to string, it still feels pretty good on the ball and almost as good on the elbow. I do, however, prefer the gut strung racquet. I have tried the racquet with the Reaction and after an hour or so of hitting with my husband I can feel the difference in my elbow. I tried to like it but didn't. I have never tried the Sensation so I can't tell you anything there.

NXT Tour and Reaction are two of the stiffer multis out there; it's a little surprising that, having suffered from tennis elbow, you're playing with those two. Sensation is certainly softer, but in addition to its relative fragility (which may or may not be relevant to you), it loses tension rather quickly. NXT and NXT Max have various defects where you're concerned too. The best bet for you and your W in Wilson's line is still Reflection, in my opinion.

I said that I played with the gut racquet unless the weather looked bad. I do not want to get water on the strings. I use the racquet with the NXT tour when I can not use the gut strung racquet. I tried the Reaction string and did not like it. My elbow would start hurting after an hour or two and it was very stiff. The NXT tour is nothing like the Reaction and feels fine for a couple of hours of play. The other thing I notice with the NXT tour is that it is a little stiff the first couple of times I use it. After about twice the strings will start to fray a little and that's when it will start to feel pretty good.
