With Federer out, can Roddick win Cincy?

Now that Federer is out of his draw, is it possible for Roddick to at least make the final, if not win Cincy? It seems that he's back on his game, being very agressive. I liked his net coverage against Vliegen, although he could work on his forehand volleys abit :)

He can't win it. No way

Why not? His draw is actually looking VERY good. The only danger that I see in his draw at the moment is Baghdatis, but Roddick is so confident on this surface it seems that he's invincible in Cincy (except against Federer).

Yes he might win but his game is soo boring...
All he does is to serve bombs ...

He had one decent match against Vliegen, who he's supposed to beat and barely beat Bracciali. Are we supposed to throw him a parade? Hold off on 'invincible'. Gonzalez, Murray, Baghdatis, Ginepri still alive in his half alone. Nadal, Ljubicic in the other half. Other guys that have the goods to beat him. You don't consider them threats in much better form?

As much as I'd like to see andy win, he's been rusty. The thing is if he gets on top of his first set, he's all cool about it and motivated. If he's broken early, then he starts whining about stupid calls and this and that. His mental game is still shaky. He won't win Cincy.

You can't ever count Roddick out with a serve like that. Vliedan wasn't playing unusually great tennis, and Roddick struggled a bit on return. Against a Top 20 player, Roddick will be tested on service and return.

Andy has been doing the right things, stepping in on returns, short balls, coming to net. He has a shot. He is not a favorite though, Nadal is.

On such a fast surface, it is extremely difficult to beat someone with a big serve. There are very few people left in the draw that can handle Roddick's serve, and now that Federer is gone, Roddick's got a ton of confidence, as he no longer has the "Ghost of I lose to Federer" over him.

Murray didn't thrash Roddick at Wimbledon, it was actually pretty close. On this surface, I would call Roddick a favorite, as his big serve and improving net game and approach shots would give Murray alot of trouble on this surface. Also Roddick's covering the net very well, and getting alot of agressive returns in at this point, and you know how Roddick plays when he has confidence. Gonzalez has no chance to defeat Roddick here, his backhand is a very big weakness on his return game, and usually a kicker will draw an error.

In the other half of the draw, Nadal and Ljubicic could possibly beat Roddick here, but you forget that Nadal has trouble against guys with big serves on fast surfaces. Ljubicic imo would have a much better chance of beating Roddick at Cincy then Nadal.

Roddick may be a one trick pony, but when the one trick pony gets going, it is very difficult to stop him.

I think we'll see a Ljubicic-Roddick final this year.
It could go either way, depends on who returns better as both these guys will bash out 20-plus aces each if they meet.
Roddick can beat Gonzo with ease, see Queens this year.
When Andy played Andy at Wimbledon, he had a horrible backhand and he came to the net in no-mans land.
Working with Connors has definitely improved his backhand, and yesterday he hit quality net approaches and won 15/19 net points. His forehand has become sort of a liability for him, but it's still effective.
He will get past Murray and Chela, if Bags gets to the semis he might lose there, though I believe he will play Gonzo instead.

Now that Fed's out, I'm definitely hoping Roddick wins. It'd be great to see him regain his 2003 form and become a threat to the top players. He just needs to improve a few aspects of his game (like the return game) and he's still top 3 material.

I hear you. Good match against Chela today. This surface does suit him.

It would be awesome if he could win it, and I'll pull for him, but the chances are small. He definitely has a chance to get to the finals, he just has to beat Murray and Gonzo who are ranked lower than him and don't have as much experience as he does, though both of them are perfectly capable of taking him out. Beating Nadal in the finals...that will be a long shot. But if he is on overdrive with his forehand and he is getting over 60% first serves in, he will have a shot.

I think Roddick has a chance in winning Cincy but the favorite right now is Nadal. I think Nadal has the best chance in winning now that Federer is out.

roddick has improved alot, but nadal will probably win it, even if fed is arround.... don't forget, nadal is the one who beat fed in hard court regularly

Wouldn't you guys love to see a Nadal/Roddick final though? I think they've only played that one time at the US Open, when Roddick destroyed him in the first round. Especially if Roddick is really building up some confidence (I haven't seen him play since Indy final) and starting to play a little like 'old' Roddick.

even roddick is back to he used to be, but nadal is not the old nadal...
nadal is the nadal who beat fed most of the time.....

C'mon guys, how come suddenly Roddick is back to his 2003 form, it was only a few days ago that he so nearly lost to Bracciali in the 1st round...Plus he still has this injury which is still causing him difficulties. Don't get me wrong I like Roddick & wanna c him back to his best, its just i dont think he's anywhere near that form yet. If Nadal continues how he is he'll win this tournament.

Roddick has managed to make it to the quarter finals without playing anyone, to speak of ( all ranked below him). We will soon see how he does against a quality opponent. I don't see any great improvement, certainly nothing like he played in 2003.

Roddick seems to be playing good to me. Last match, he was really aggressive. He seems confident.

And despite being a huge Federer fan, it's hard for me to see how anyone can return some of his serves, whether you know where they're coming or not.

Murray managed to return enough to win in straights at Wimbledon. Though I do hope he ends up winning this event, he's had a run of rough luck lately.

Based on that rationale, Roger Federer has been a paper champ since the Aussie Open in 2004 because he's been number one in the world since then, and everyone else is ranked below him, which apparently means that everyone else isn't anyone to speak of.

Looks like Roddick didn't have to do it, Ferrero already did it. So, I guess Nadal already won the tournament even though he lost, right nadalgirl?

For those saying that Roddick isn't improving, he was demolishing Murray 5-2 in the second set untill he got tight abit in the end. He made some pretty good low net volleys too, and has really improved the backhand. He may not be Edberg at the net, but he's really getting hot now.

Roddick is 5-2 against Gonzo, 2-0 against Ferrero, and 7-0 against Robredo.

Gonzo has improved recently, but I doubt his newfound tennis smarts will help him return Roddick's serves. The courts are fairly fast and Roddick has home court advantage, so you've got to like his chances. He's always had success in Cincy.
