Goffin played very well and Federer played like garbage after set 1.
But by far not his worst performance.
Give some respect to Goffin.

Fed fans can't do that. Goffin only won because Federer was off, didn't play well, his back was hurting him, his knee was playing up, Goffin got lucky, Federer was tired etc.

I don't think they are. On average of sets this definitely wasn't his worst loss because he was good in the first, but his last 2 sets today were horrific. Definitely up there with the worst in his career. All this thread shows me is that in a career as long as Federer's he has a lot of really terrible matches. Obviously way more good/great than bad, but still a lot of bad.

There's also some i haven't listed, as people have reminded us :p Fed is more prone to them than a Nadal but he's also more prone to breathtaking performances, as opposed to Nadal vs Anderson where he just *gets the job done.*

Some of Nadals worst performances include USO 2009 vs Del Po, 2011 AO vs Ferrer (injured in that match) 2013 Wimbledon vs Darcis and 2015 FO vs Djokovic.

Yes, Fed is more likely than Nadal to implode in a barrage of UEs, but Nadal has gotten blown out a fair bit in his career by a zoning opponent. Just a product of their styles of play I'd say.

I'd add a few more from 2015 too. His match with Berdych wasn't pretty, I remember one match against Coric was really bad (not sure the year).

Ah yes, the Berdych match was horrific! And that Coric match led to people proclaiming Coric the next Djokovic, think that was 2015 aswell.

Artists like Fed always have wider fluctuations, a machine like Nadal is less unpredictable.

Yeah, I'll go with the grand slam final, the one where he'd won 6 bo5 set matches previously, beating a few very good players, all for the loss of what, 3 sets?

He hadn't played that well this week to begin with. He could easily have lost that Zverev match in straight sets. Most of those others listed have some viable reasoning save for probably the Berdych and Cilic ones, but again, neither is a final, and he didn't look very good in either tournament prior to those losses.

Frankly, I was very surprised to see him going to Shanghai, and I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't play anything between the US Open and Basel starting next year.
He should skip most, if not all, the clay season except maybe Istanbul, and then Canada in the summer. That's probably the best way for him to keep winning hte important titles (GS and his strongest tourneys)

Federer didn't practice.. sounds Montrealesque as far as his handling of the situation. I don't really understand this unless he was injured. I really believe it played a factor in this match. I don't want to give an injury excuse as a devoted fan ya know.

Not practicing if uninjured is a lazy move. I'm not hating cause I love Federer, but why the hell didn't he practice?

Federer certainly didn't play well for whatever reason, so more than a bad loss - it was an uninteresting loss.

People only remember the famous GS defeats but there were plenty of times when Fed had become really frustrating to watch. I have followed Federers matches for many years. I remember the 2001 win over Sampras when it happened.

A particular period I remember Federer playing some bad tennis (not bad at all obviously, but by his lofty standards) was early in 2010 after his Australian Open win against Murray. Those tournaments before Roland Garros (Indian Wells, Miami, Rome, Estoril) really stick in my mind. The matches against Baghdatis, Gulbis, and Montanes, were a real low point for me. He seemed to completely lose that ability to be clutch and trustworthy.
So for me, I'm going to say Federer vs. Montanes at Estoril 2010 was the lowest point I can recall. Not a famous match, I realise that, but I watched probably 90% of his matches from 2004 onwards.

It was a bad performance but given that he's 36 and it's the end of the year after he won two slams, a few Masters 1000s and finally played his main rival intelligently to win all four of their matches this year, I can't be too greedy. I think there were many other matches when he was in his prime or close to it, that were much more disappointing. The FO 2008 vs Nadal has to be at the top of the list of Federer's worst performances ever IMO.

Sadly that's true for most Fed fans.
I am one myself, watching every single match and so on, but Goffin was on fire in set two and three.
I didn't think he could beat Roger, because he lacks weapons, but he did and he deserved it.

But of course, all those UE from Fed helped, no doubt about that.
But that's tennis.
