Yonex Tour Super 850 Pro Spin vs. Gosen SM

I have been doing a direct comparison between the Yonex Tour Super 850 Pro Spin 16 and my standard Gosen Sheep Micro 17. I was drawn to the Yonex because of its high stiffness rating for a multi and the many great comments here about it. I strung 2 of my Yonex RDS001 MPs up fresh, one with the 850 and one with the SM. Both at 58 on the mains and 55 on the crosses. After a couple of hours of bedding them in, here are my impressions.

The 850 is definitely a very crisp string, but still not as crisp as the SM. It felt great for the first 60 minutes, then settled down into more of a typical multi profile, i.e. softer and with less feel. I immediately noticed the loss of feel, particularly at the net where my volleys lost the crisp feel. Also I noted that I had to take a really big cut at the ball to get any pace on my shots. This actually made me prefer the 850 at the baseline where I could swing freely, generate good topspin, and rarely worry about the ball flying long. But everywhere else I felt the SM was a better choice.

All in all, I think the 850 Super Pro is probably the best playing multi I have ever hit with. Its a great multi if you like a crisper string. Still the SM is almost as good and it costs roughly 50-60% less than the 850, so the value proposition doesn't work. Still if you must have a multi and want something close to a syn gut, the 850 is worth a look.

Is the Gosen significantly stiffer than the Yonex?

I also think the 850 is a great multi. Especially for the price. I think there are some syn guts that compete pretty good with multis, but there is a certain kind of feel that a multi like 850 gives that you just can't get with a syn gut.

I think that feel is one of the main reasons for picking a string. Unfortunately it's almost always directly opposite of durability.
