So despite playing at a low level, a huge comeback, at least for me, can be really rewarding and spike some confidence in turning the H2H around, hahaha.
I started the year 0-9 against one of my friends who started playing around the same time as me, just casually. I was getting really sick of losing, since besides his first serve, he really has no weapons despite being 6'6" and 240lbs.
Being 5'7-5'8" myself, I was playing WAAAY too much into his hands. Going for winners all the time, being too aggressive on no-pace second serves, etc.
So I mapped out after the ninth loss his weaknesses in my head, and tried to do everything possible to exploit each one of them:
A) draw him into net with a drop shot, then lob him, or at least force him to step way back to hit an overhead
B) slice deep to the forehand, where he makes many errors
C) extend rallies to get some sort of rhythm, and when comfortable, then go for a winner
D) make an effort to serve harder, instead of just spinning it in.
Well I finally got my first win last week. 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Was even until the third. I would probably be a much better player if I was larger because my arm is dead after an hour and a half of hitting.
Anyways, yesterday, I got bombed in the first set. 6-1. Started the second with my plan in place, was not executing that well. Fell down a double break. 0-3. Had a massive game 4th game which saw him dig it out, so 4-0. I got broken again, 5-0. At this point he is serving for the match. Gets up 6-3, 5-0, 30-0.
Played two very long rallies to win the next two points, and after that, he started making errors. I hit a couple really nice shots and next thing you know, I have won 4 straight points.
Well I won the set in a tie break 7-6, then won the final set 6-1. Suddenly I don't feel like I should be losing to him anymore. Moral of the story is, never give up, especially at the rec level.
So what are your largest comebacks? Furthermore, what extent do you go to to win?
