stop bashing federer for the 15 jacket

To me the whole argument can only be based around whether Roddick took offense or not. IMHO, he could care less. So if his opponent wasn't bothered by it why should we be?

I do think Andy did take a little offense to Roger saying "I know how you feel" as was evidenced by his passive-aggressive joking response. But if I had to guess back in the locker room they both have a lot of respect for one another.

You shouldn't judge a man based upon one or two incidents if he has a long track record of being a sportsman and gentleman. How many years has Fed been voted the best sportsman by his peers? +5?

No, not really, grow up.

The worst thing about this is Federer is being bashed for being successful..it's like you guys are saying he should fail at his job or something.
He didn't have to flaunt it. It just didn't look good on his part to rub it in even though it was unintentional. Let others talk about you is the way to go. Not you talking about yourself and wearing jackets to show what you did.

Do what I have been doing for years. Boycott Nike. I can't stand that company.

I don't buy anything Nike, but Roger himself said he and Nike come up with the ideas, so Roger is half to blame :) and he is quite happy to wear it

He was handed that jacket by an official after he won. (Shown on BBC) He didn't have it in his bag and he didn't even know about it beforehand. In an interview on ESPN radio this morning Federer said that he didn't know anything about the special jacket until someone handed it to him after the match.

But I know people will continue bashing him regardless.

Does it matter?

LOL. Exactly. Anyone who thinks it's "cool" to wear a jacket with your accomplishments WRITTEN ON IT.....ROFL! They're the ones who need to grow up. Especially when the jacket is custom made for you! It's not like it's a traditional uniform! And to do it AT an awards ceremony right....um...yes...people already know what you did...you're getting a big trophy for it....

Low-class, cheesy, trailer-park stuff. Somebody in the WWE might do this, but they'd do it to get people to hate them, and they'd be doing it fully aware of how stupid it is....

This is worthy of an SNL parody...you win Wimbledon, your 15th title, and you put on a 15 jacket???

As a gesture of contrition and belated modesty, he should have his name removed from the Wimbledon trophy.

NOT!

16 what? Months off due to tendonitis?

:)( I feel bad now for Nadal... I'm sure he'll do well again, winning more slams, but I can't see him beating 15. I'm sure someone will beat 15 though)

He can win more..but people look at his age wrong..he has 6 slams at 23..but has been a force since 18, Fed has been a force since about 23 or 22...

In terms of tennis mileage Rafa isn't 23, and i wonder if he'll have the longevity for to achieve 10 or more..it would be nice to see him in the double digits.

THANK YOU!
Federer is a really nice guy. He wouldn't do something stupid like that.

funny how macenroe knew it was on the jacket before it was brought out but federer didnt.

McEnroe was part of the Nike commercial that played immediately after the win (on NBC anyway) congratulating Federer for winning his 15th, includes serena, pete, tiger, and some other nike stars

For those of you who were offended by the 15 jacket, I have some other suggestions:
1) Let's get rid of the whole trophy vs plate thing. It's just so mean to the guy who loses the match.
2) In golf, no more green jacket at the Masters. How would the guy in second place feel
3) We need to absolutely bar any team from putting on "world champs" hat/shirts/etc on as soon as they win. That makes the runner up team feel bad.
4) No more "I'm going to Disneyworld" ads.
5) The Gatoraid bath at the end of most team sporting events should be officially banned.
6) At the Olympics, a neutral song should be played at the medal ceremony for each event and all medals should be made of the same alloy. How do the folks who finish in 2nd/3rd feel when they have to listen to a foreign national anthem.
7) The winner of the Indy 500 should just drink ice water like everybody else instead of the traditional winners milk.
8) Champagne spray on the podium of a cycling or formula one event- NO MORE

Hey, Roger won. He dealt with the pressure of trying to break 15 while winning an incredibly tough match in front of many of the legends. Let him celebrate, especially in light of last year's crushing defeat. Roddick is a big boy and knew what the moment was all about. If the 15 jacket made Roddick upset, I'm sure getting back to Brooklyn will help ease his pain.

That being said, I wonder what Nike has in store for when Tiger breaks Jack's record.

I didn't think there was any thing wrong with Roger wearing that jacket, but I did think it was a little arrogant when he changed his bandana after winning the second set.8)

Who cares about the jacket, it was a one time thing and besides he made history so does it really matter what he wore.

Nadal should have a headband that says "6."

Even though it's been mentioned several times in this thread alone, it seems some people here really have selective comprehension issues.

Nike is paying Federer an enormous amount of money (approx. 13 million per year) for him to wear and promote Nike. For them it is a huge investment that they expect to pay off. It's natural for them to market Federer as much as possible in order to get any returns on their money.

Also, some people seem to think that they pay Federer so he can go around and play fashion designer for a couple of years. He doesn't design these clothes. The best he gets (the same goes for Nadal AFAIK) is a different CHOICE of clothes for the season. Everyone else has to wear the standard range. Nonetheless, he has a contractual agreement to wear what Nike tells him to, with the given flexibility of different styles and colours (i.e look at it as 3 or 4 different jackets, all with the number 15 on them and one of which he had to pick, if he did, in fact know about it which has not been proven).

By the way, I'm not too sure of the numbers, I got them from http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/57885 but if they're true, he's looking at easily over $100 million for the duration of the contract. Anybody who says that he decides what advertising will be on his clothes (that's what the number 15 is from Nike's point of view) needs to go and read up on marketing techniques.
