So the 4 grand slam champions this year have been Wozniacki, Halep, Kerber and Osaka. I'm pretty neutral towards those first 3 players, but I was very happy to see Wozniacki and Halep finally crossing the finishing line and winning their first majors (this year's women's AO tournament was incredible), and for Kerber to win another major at a 3rd different venue no less to show that 2016 wasn't a flash in the pan.

And I've become an Osaka fan since I saw her play Venus at Wimbledon and beat Kerber at the US Open last year, so I'm delighted with her success. She my favourite WTA player alongside Caroline Garcia. She was cool and calm under pressure, served very well and expertly transitioned between attack and defence from the baseline. She beat the in-form Sabalenka in the 4th round before her convincing victories over Keys and Serena in the semis and final; an impressive way to win a first grand slam title.

Can you think of another player whose first 2 career titles were of this caliber? I can't think of another of the top of my head. Osaka had never even won an ITF title in her career.

Wasnt Ostapenkoflop first title RG? Not sure. And not sure what title she won next?
She's so inconsistent it's hard to keep track.

I'm struggling to think of any as well. If Kuerten had won the 1997 Montreal final against Woodruff, that would have been his 2nd title after his his RG success earlier that year. His 2nd title came nearly a year later at the 1998 Stuttgart outdoor event where winner got a Mercedes. Wilander's 2nd title after his stunning RG success in 1982 came in Bastad later that year, and Chang's first title before his 1989 RG title came in San Francisco earlier that year.

Of course on the women's side Ostapenko has come reasonably close, first title at RG in 2017, 2nd title at Seoul in 2017, and then her next final appearance in Miami this year. ASV won 2 fairly minor titles before her stunning RG upset win in 1989.

These examples don't fit the bill, but Becker's first 3 titles were in Queen's, Wimbledon and Cincinnati (admittedly a week before the USO and not really 'masters series equivalent' yet but he beat Wilander in the final) in 1985, and after winning Wimbledon last year Muguruza had 4 titles and 2 majors (then her 5th title came in Cincy a few weeks later).

So everyone who thinks she was justly punished for not following the rules now just want to ban her permanently outside of any rule.

At least you are honest!

What else would you expect around here? This is the same board where certain members pray at the altar of Evert (Just ask Connors about that), yet treat Serena as if she committed murder. This is what you are dealing with. Selective outraged based on something having nothing to do with tennis.

Ah Chris Evert, famous for her anger and outbursts on court. Threatening Umpires, Linesman, practically defaulted from a major, unable to finish a Wimbledon doubles match because of bizarre behaviour, temper tirades, robbing opponents of their moment in the sun, gamesmanship, woefully bad loser, swearing on court, screaming "c'mon" at any opportunity, grunting when playing dropshots, called on hindrance, receiving penalty points/games......
Oh wait...... that wasn't Evert.....

Not permanently but for a period, 12 months is fair for the nature of the offence. The bat smash and last tirade was done to put off of opponent as a last attempt to avoid impending defeat. Sporting etiquette of the lowest standard and should be dealt with accordingly.

From national news media outlets to Twitter, kind of shocking that the media are spinning it that Serena was the victim! LOL! Rules are rules!
Nike money and the fear of being labeled by SJW as racist/antifeminist triggers most of the businesses (media and celebrities) to act in Serena’s favor.
Meanwhile, us, the plebs, with nothing to lose, call it as it is... an act of a rich bully.

I am curious if she will be booed by the crowd at future events. Afterall, she did work hard for that

What's your point.? different umpire, different call. Fed was sitting not standing up pointing fingers or demanding an apology on "three changeovers"
Should Fed have gotten a code violation? Possibly Yes. I'd give him a violation and he's my favorite player.
Was the umpire Carlos Ramos?
Did Fed demand, call the umpire a thief, tell the umpire you owe me, or just use profanity as an adverb?
Are technical fouls called on every NBA player when they get in the refs face, curse ? No. It depends on the history of the player.
Does Fed have a history? No. Does Serena? Yes.
Get over this sh*t... She was never in the lead, lost the match & it did not change the match. Big deal. Move on & hope she wins next year.

Bring up McEnroe as the most equivalent in terms of heated exchanges with umpires and linesman. He got a game penalty and was suspended for 2 months for his abuse. Stop this nonsense of sexism. If Venus or Sloane did that, they would probably not been given a violation. Well, they actually would not let it get to that level.

I initially thought of Muguruza, however her first 2 titles before the French were relatively small. Ostapenko comes close but the Korea Open is only an international event.

Sloane Stephen's, post comeback from surgery, fits the bill. Her first 2 titles back were her US Open and Miami.

Before winning IW in 2014 and the US Open in 2015 Pennetta hadn't wont any kind of title in singles since 2010...so it's close, sort of.

Sharapova won 3 relatively middle of the pack tournaments before she lifted the Wimbledon trophy in 2004...

Those are the closest off the top of my head....

Serena behaved like a temperamental brat throwing a tantrum when things weren't going her way.

Her behaviour was poor in the extreme and to threated the umpire that she will ensure he never chairs another one of here matches is a disgrace as was her calling him a liar and a thief.

But what is even worse is the rush to defend her appalling behaviour by people who should know better.

the likes of the WTA ,Andy Roddick, Billie Jean King and Sue baker have embarrassed themselves by trying to stick up for her and lay the blame at poor Ramos's feet when all he did was apply the rules correctly.

If the attack on Ramos' continues I suggest as many reasonable tennis fans as possible on here make it clear we support him 100%.

First the ridiculous princess tennis attire, now this childish, self important, tirade. What an embarrassment.

Really. I wonder if she has any idea how ridiculous she looks with that fluffy, frilly ballet skirt sticking out over her massive butt. She looks like a cartoon character. And now, this insane 20-minute tantrum. What a freak show.

People keep making big deal out of the word "thief," but as many have pointed out, it wasn't just that single word; that was the culmination of a prolonged, screaming verbal attack and attempt to dominate the umpire and completely disrupt the match. The "thief" thing was just the last straw. I'm surprised he didn't just disqualify her.

Yes, other players have blown up, called the ump names, etc. and in general were penalized for it, and in some cases disqualified. But they "got it all out," accepted it, and went back to playing the match. That didn't happen here; she went into a prolonged rage and kept attacking him over and over again, between points, etc. and wouldn't let it go. Good grief, is she on 'roids or something?

Former umpire Richard Ings, who was also in charge of officials and rules on the men's tour, backed Ramos' actions.

"Carlos was composed, effective, knowledgeable of the rules and applied them absolutely correctly in each of those three situations," he told Radio 5 live.

"He saw violations, he had the courage of his convictions to call them when he saw it and I support him 110%. It's one of the best officiating jobs I've seen in years."

I totally agree and I hope that most of the sensible tennis world and bodies get behind him 100%, he deserves it and for the likes of Andy Roddick, Billie Jean King and Marion Bartoli to insult his umpiring
and scramble to defend Serena's actions are inexcusable.

Nope, they all want to keep their jobs.
You will hear criticism from political columnists, but never tennis commentators.
BJK: what double standards? She picked up 3 code violations. Any male tennis player would have had the same penalty.

Thus far, most of the reporting here (I live in Philly) is pro-Serena. All the talk is of her "fight for equality", and the needed changes in tennis!

Seems Serena is being rewarded and applauded for her diva-ness. I just can't stop gagging over this.

Ask Connors about your false idol.

Make it the rules then like they do in Football and other Sports. Bringing the game into disrepute, make the rule charge her and ban her.

Not going to happen. If Courier committing an act of violece by shaking the occupied umpire's chair, nearly putching him from it...if Hewitt was not permanently banned for his racist tirade against Blake and a linesperson, then you are never going to see any other action taken against Serena's minor incident.

Good luck with that "we" dream. Ramos went overboard with his abuse of his "authority" especially after he had a far milder reaction to Nadal's direct threat to his livelihood. Now he should truly experience that threat put into action.

can you read the whole context? I said I'd give Fed a violation for verbal abuse.
I am accosting Serena? WT_ is the matter with you.
NOTE: Not everybody, not half of the tennis world, not all blacks, and not all women will agree with Serena.
Some of you Serena fans are all up in her junk. The woman's behavior was wrong period. end of story.
Deal with it and move on.

Wow that really is a disgraceful cartoon full of Jim Crow type racism. Naomi not even really given the courtesy of being shown in the image and looks more like Sharapova with the real blonde hair and barely tanned skin. Just pathetic really. What Serena did was awful and a disgrace but that cartoon is disgusting and vile. Rightfully getting torn apart on social media.

JK Rowling said this:

Well done on reducing one of the greatest sportswomen alive to racist and sexist tropes and turning a second great sportswoman into a faceless prop.

You are right except for the part that what Serena did was 'awful and a disgrace.'

Losing one's temper is unfortunate but hardly awful or a disgrace.

She didn't call the umpire an abortion, call him names related to his appearance, education, intelligence, ethnicity and so on. Those would be disgraceful.

She called him a thief because she believed he stole her point and a liar because she believed he had earlier agreed that she did not cheat.

So yes she lost her temper and certainly should have handled things better. But to pretend that she did something awful (as many here are alleging) is probably a very clear demonstration of the sexism Serena was talking about.

And yeah that cartoon is racist as ****.

As if I'd ask Connors anything!
I know you are attempting to rile me by slating Evert, and I admire your tenacity, but, as you know, l just take it as deflection on your part. And that just amuses me.

You wish to compare Evert's private life with Serena's on court antics. So be it.

But l wonder which of the two is considered one of the classiest champions ever. And which..... isn't?

But, you plough on..... It's rather endearing.
