Don't ya just love that ?

Anyway, I thought I would Post for our non-USA Fans, a few definitions of symbols used to better understand the game of Football and maybe convert a few.

TD - Touch Down
FG - Field Goal
TB - Touch Back
Spike - When a QB (Quater Back) intentially grounds the ball to stop the clock
Snap - The handoff of the ball from the C (Center) lines person to the QB.
PI - Pass Interference (penalty)
p - Punt, usually happens after an unsuccessful drive.

Positions

Offense

T - Left & Right Tackle

TE - Tight End

G - Left & Right Guard

C - Center

QB - Quarter Back

RB - Running Back

FB - Full Back

WR - Wide Receiver

Defense

DE - Left & Right Defensive End

DT - Nose Tackle (I know why not NT) dunno

ILB - Left & Right Inside Line Backer

OLB - Left & Right Outside Line Backer

DB - Left & Right Corner Back or sometimmes called Deep Back

S - Free Safety & Strong Safety
* Thought I'd explain this one a little:
The Strong Safety, as the name suggests, lines up close to the Strong Side of the field (the side with the Tight End on it). He is more responsible for protecting against the run. However, he can also be called on to cover the Tight End or one of the running backs if need be. And the reason for this is because quite often the QB looks to the TE in the event his WRs are covered heavily. This is what's consider a Screen Pass where the TE runs a cross pattern just beyond the Line of Scrimmage. If you ever play this game try very hard not to raise your hand when someone wants a volunteer for TE.
Those guys get the hardest hits - way too much traffic in that area.

I tell you, it's a bad day to be a Packer fan...

Well if there's anybody on this site that can relate, it's me. To tell you the truth, GB has done this before, like last year if my memory serves me and still made the PlayOffs. So fear not or at least not yet. Problem is you have some very green Guards not like Wahle and Marco Rivera. These new guys can't stop my mother. So can you teach that or is it something built in ? I feel sorry for a lot of these guys that come from NCAA Ball thinking they're badass and when they get hit by a seasoned Pro Tackle, they feel the pain and get Gunshy.

Well still if there's anybody who can figure it out, it's Bret Favre. If you're a true fan then you already know that. Damn I wish Favre would get an offer from Jerry Jones

favre's gonna retire this year. he should have quit 2 years ago. and if he went to dallas i would have to hate him. dallas just pisses me off its like there finally losing so we have to feel bad for them now. they won for how many years in the past its nice to see other teams winning.

Yo Blubarry. You don't have to prefer Jones OR Barber. They complement each other very well, and not every single has to have a feature-back system. Barber breaks more tackles, but can't compare to Jones in terms of speed or overall elusiveness.

Drew Bledsoe is very good. Give him time and he'll pick apart D's. The line looks great so far, so he's doing pretty good.

DT is a defensive tackle. NT is a nose tackle. An NT is in the middle of a 3-man line, while there are two DT's in a 4 man line. NT's are space-eaters and almost always should be 300+ pounds while a DT can be a quicker pass rusher. A NT should draw a double-team consistently for the 3-4 to work; his most important job is to occupy blockers.

That strong safety definition isn't all that great. Even strong safeties get plenty of deep coverage action in the Cover-2. Yes usually he covers a TE or RB in man-coverage, but often he has deep coverage duties, or helps double-cover a WR, or plays an intermediate zone. Strong safeties are also used to blitz more often than FS's but the distinction isn't all that clear sometimes.

I agree with you 100% about Jones. When he debuted, of course there were the comparions between him and Emmit and comparisons should never be made like that. So he was trying to live up to something that he could never accomplish. He may wind up accomplishing more. As for your belief of a Featured-Back, no question. It keeps them guessing and anything that keeps them guessing is all good. As for Bledsoe, come on man, he has been around long enough to already know what is going on. My only prob with Drew is he holds the ball too damn long for my taste. and that tells me he's indecisive.
So he puts a lot of pressure on his Guards to hold the Pass Rushers off longer than they can.

Yeah I was trying to keep it as simple as possible. That whole thing is mostly for those that live outside of the US and know nothing about Amercian Football. Your precise definition would confuse the hell out of them because then you'd have to explain the meaning of 3 Man Front and its' purpose etc.
But obviously you know football dude.

the nfl is messed up right now. did you guys see some of the point spreads this weak. colts are favored by 18 over titans. thats riducalus. ive never seen a spread like that. also patriots by 9 over dolphins seemed a little high also for pro football.

McNabb isn't that great. The Cowboys just had terrible coverage yesterday. Watkins gave up 3 big passes but I feel for the guy...he was crying on the sidelines.

To the casual observer (or Eagles fan), McNabb was great. To someone who knows football, it's clear that the Cowboys secondary just played a terrible game. That flea-flicker should've been picked off by Roy Williams.

It's ok to be back and for my first Post upon return, I thought I'd talk about Football on the Tennis Board, since me and my friends watched a lot of it.

Cowboys vs Eagles was a complete disaster. I was amongst true Diehard Cowboy Fans including myself. The Corona's, Chips & Salsa turned out to be the only good thing about Sunday. Watching Drew Bledsoe completely shame himself on the National Stage couldn't have hurt any deeper. I called a friend in CT. that's a Philly Fan and proceeded to secure some nice side action because I was confident, Dallas was going to go there and turn Philadelphia into the CryBaby City.

!. Worse Quarter Backing I've ever seen
2. Worse Calls from the Co-Ordinators I ever witnessed.
3. Worse decisions between and Quarter Back and Coach I thought possible.

The Philadelphia Eagles didn't WIN Sunday's Game. The Dallas Cowboys LOST Sunday's Game. Drew Bledsoe handed it to them on a Silver Platter.
Terrell Owens was so ticked that he probably wanted to punch Drew out.

All that's left to say is, Parcells showed me he doesn't have anything new or exciting this season to ensure a Playoff birth as long as he continues to hang onto his babyboy Drew.

You obviously have not been watching the Browns...

That's why today's safteys have to be so damn versatile. With the popularity of cover 2, you need safteys that can almost double as CBs in terms of speed and field coverage.

Well, even though the final score was very close, a team that is considered to be the best of their division (5-0 Colts), going up against one of the worst teams in the NFL (the 0-5 titans) will always be HEAVILY favored. Look at the line whenever The 49ers travel to Soldier field in chicago. that'll be an 18 pt line too.

The Cowboys secondary did play a terrible game. McNabb is a stud though. He can throw off his back foot on a frozen rope, and he's fast enough to buy himself time to get out of the pocket and make someting happen. Think of this, No QB in HISTORY has ever thrown for more than 1500yds, 10 TD's and 1 or less picks through their first 5 games. McNabb has done it this year. Crappy coverage? Yes. Great QB exploiting those weaknesses? Absolutley.

Edit: he's also rushed for 3 touchdowns this year.

BTW, Raised in Seattle, big Hawks fan. Bears fans, you guys nearly ended my life last Sunday when we got SCHLOCKED at soldier field. Bears are a helluva team though. Punch you in the mouth defense, where the hell did Rex Grossman come from offense. Fun team to watch. Barring injuries, have fun at Super Bowl XLI

The problem with Bledsoe is not that he's immobile. He just waits for his wide receivers to get open before he throws...which turns out to be a long wait sometimes. I don't get why he didn't just lob it to Owens a few times and let him make a play...Owens is 6'3'' and the Philly DB's are 5'10'' or less I think. Why no jump balls??

And BigServer, the Eagles have had quite a cushy schedule so far except for the Dallas game. They'll start to fade. And even if they make the playoffs, McNabb is even less clutch than Bledsoe, so they're going nowhere...

Eagles playing their BEST > Cowboys playing their worst....by just a LITTLE! This was a division game in a hostile environment for the young Cowboys...a loss like this hurts, but they are to be expected.

i dont get why everyone was so big on the cowboys. no running game. aging quarterback, and the worst thing is they added TO. the guy is a cancer in the locker room. i wouldnt be surprised to see him off the team in a couple of weeks. let bledsoe have 2 more bad games. also he threw 13 times to TO and he only caught 3 so he didnt play well either. as for the eagles this year they are playing well. but there not the even close to the best.

Dude, of those 13 passes, about 5 were catchable and two were intercepted. The other 6 were nowhere to be found. Yes TO did drop a couple, but look at what happened this last week. Three TD catches. You give this guy the ball, he'll make it happen. Bad teamate, but great reciever.

great he has one good game and hes the greatest wr again. how long before he does something stupid and gets kicked off. i still doubt the cowboys going far. anyone who can put pressure on bledsoe will beat them.

Yes that's true. I think the Cowboys finish 2nd or 3rd in that division, but I do think that TO is a great reciever. I will never defend his locker room antics, but he brings it and leaves it all on the field with the best of them.
