Tons of digital pushes have been poured down over this forum after the famous WTA party " incident" that involved Chris Evert and Tracy Austin.
We are not back to that as it has been already and very deeply debated by the fiercest Evertians here ( since Tracy seems to have no flagbearer, I had to assume that role).
Evert and Austin played the same but...were they the same?
A superficial look may indicate likewise.Both behaved well on court, were very focused and ambitious individuals and their peaks overlapped for a while (Austin retired in 1982, as she couldn´t overcome an injury and having played the tour just five full years).
Riots of US journalist, a bit fed up of Evert winning so much enhanced Austin when she arrived in 1978.They wanted somebody to destroy the Bride of America myth and Austin, another fellow american was the perfect target.Navratilova came from Europe and she was such a strange individual ( at that time at least) that she offered little bulk to the press in terms of " the perfect AntiEvert".Evonne was not that consistent nor tennis focused and she was also somebody everybody liked so she wasn´t the targetted opponent as well.
If we have a deep insight and go through a bit of meditation and unbiassed judgement, one comes to the conclusion that Evert vs Austin was just the modern version of WHITESNOW TALE
Tell me Magical Mirror...is there any girl who is Most perfect than myself? , keept Chris asking year after year ever since 1974, forgetting the abortion, passion for male and non schoolarship but she could sell a refrigerator to an eskimo such perfection had Chris reached in the PR arts)
And of course, in 1974 the answer was "NO, my Highness, you are the most perfect girl in VirginiaSlimsland and Avonland as well..."
In 1975, 1976,1977,1978 the answer kept being the same...
But by the start of 1979, something dramatically changed in the iced cool and charming Floridian ( Chris was really a charming girl, do not take my wrong).
When in the Avon Finals Austin trashed Evert, the mirror finlly answered:
" There is a More Perfect Girl than You, Oh my Highness¡¡ Her backhand is two handed like yours, her smile more natural than yours, her ambition and concentration equals yours...and her mind is able to get through a tennis court ¡¡¡ in fact, she has an intelectual career at Stanford¡¡¡)"
And the rest is history.
I am very interesting in knowing if, after another Tracy beatdown by 1982 ( The Masters?), Chris Evert finally decided to give her a venenous apple and cut her career in her flourishing teen years¡¡¡
