I'm heartbroken

People here tend to skew the facts about the match.
1. Novak played awful tennis yesterday. He's a good player, so he still won.
2. Federer played good, but mostly because Novak just watched the balls fly by, and didn't even bother to try and reach them.
3. Novak was choking throughout the match
4. Federer choked even worse on match points
5. This was an awful final, and what makes it epic is just context (Federer being 1000yo in a Wimbledon final; Novak chasing his records; match length; everyone cheering for Federer / against Novak etc.)
All in all, it was 5 hours of my life wasted (well, 4 actually, because I took an hour to read some comics during this miserable match). Yey, Novak won. I'm his fan so it's good for the statistics, but I'll try to forget what I saw.
What comics did you read?

Bruh we can't even say this is comparable to Wimby 2018. Nadal would still need to serve it out and that's no given, esp vs Djokovic

This on the other hand was not one but TWO Championship points on Fed's own serve, who's a much better server than our guy mind you, and still lost.

Sure it is, had Nadal won the tb that he had multiple set points for it would have been the same thing. Both times it felt like Djokovic was outplayed the whole match so at the end of the day I have to give him credit for standing in the storm and walking out the winner.

And therein is the mystery of this sport. The player who appears to have been outplayed is the one who made the fewer mistakes and won the last point of the match.

You could just as easily say, if Novak converted his BPs better, he would have beaten Nadal in 4

Djokovic was 3/16 on BP in the first four sets, while Nadal was 4/6

He played at least as well as Nadal in that match. Can't say the same about this one against Fed

I didn't feel Nadal was the better player throughout the match, Djokovic was more deserving there than here.

This match was a heist of the biggest order if I ever saw one. gotta be honest if this was Nadal winning vs Federer this way it would've been the most awkward feeling in years of watching Nadal lifting trophies.

I'm having trouble accepting what happened yesterday. It feels even worse than it did yesterday after the match. I could deal with Wimbledon 2014. It was a five setter as well, but Djokovic was the better player throughout that match. It stung, but there was none of that feeling that there was an undeserved winner. Yesterday only one player should have won and that was Federer. Better player in each of the sets, bar the tiebreaks. Served for the match, two championship points in the biggest event in tennis. Lost. It just sucks in every way. It shouldn't have happened. Fed had basically every statistics on his side, yet lost. Obviously credit must be given to Djokovic. No player has ever been as clutch as him. Yet that doesn't make the feeling go away. This wasn't Djokovic's match, this was Roger's.

This loss makes the USO 10 and 11 losses pale in comparison. I simply can't believe Fed lost after having had championship points on his own goddamn serve. I just don't know how to forget about this, and I don't think Federer will either. This has had to scar him. I hope he can get back up and win #21, because he really deserves it. I've read what some Djokovic fans have been saying. That this was karma for the crowd being entirely on Federer's side. Really? Is it Fed's fault that they don't cheer for Djokovic? Also saw someone mentioning the finger wag at the 2011 FO SF. So this was karma for a celebration he did that wasn't directly aimed at Djokovic? Man, some of these fans don't get how many of us Federer fans feel today. At least be respectful, FOR ONCE. I know some great posters like @Hitman and @Djokovic2011 are kind and sensible, but I would have imagined that even the usual suspects could at least be quiet and not talk with utter disrespect to Federer and his fans after yesterday.

Federer beating Nadal and coming so close to beating Djokovic, while being the better player in BOTH matches, at the age of 37 and 11 months, is just insane. If there ever was a doubt regarding who the GOAT is, we got the answer the last couple of days. Despite the loss.
As much a yesterday may hurt you, fact is, Roger is a 20 slam winner, won over 100 tournaments, the most popular player on tour, and still reaching slam finals at 37. Pardon me for not feeling sorry for Roger and his fans.

You lot might be harsher on him now than us. :D Which is understandable, because he made us poop our pants, while he eventually lost from a very favorable position.

You are not the only one..friend.

It sucks big time because he had two match points on serve and couldn't get that done. Nerves clearly hit him in that game, he hit two forehand errors.

When he had breakpoint at 10-10 , and had a forehand pass. He went cross court because that's where he went last time. And Djokovic guessed correctly.

I'd only advise you to move on. Don't think about this match or tennis.
Get away from all this for some days.
Time will heal

As long as you accept that there is no GOAT, just a pantheon of all-time greats, and that the active ones tend to tear strips off each other like this, you should be able to accept the outcome.

How about this: go back and watch the 2007 USO final. Djokovic was hitting bigger, moving better, serving better, and yet Federer won in straights. Veterans master the art of winning ugly.

This is an extremely painful loss.

My solace is that at the end of the day Novak won match point and deserves the title. Not like Fed got a bad call against him which cost him the title...Nole won fair and square so deserves it.

If Fed wants to make up for it he can work harder and let this fuel him to win another slam.

It's just the opposite. The match was on his racquet. With one serve, he could have defended his goathood and secured his legacy... He didn't, and few people were surprised.

It's now pretty much a forgone conclusion Fed won't be the slam king, and may be destined for 3rd place.

I thought most Nole fans were subdued after the game. I know there are some exceptions but most of the Novak fans I know and follow were just happy he won and made no comments about Fed. If anything I found a few Nole fans “defending” Fed after many of Fed’s fans began trashing him. Count me in that group. I don’t think Fed choked. I think neither played the best match technically, both had ups and downs, and both gave it their all. Luck played a role as it always does in such close matches.

If we are going to complain about fan bases I think Nole fans have felt for years that many other fans simply dismissed Nole as a real contender. Starting some time ago with Nole “majoring in minors” or making fun of Nole when he began losing after 2016. Now some are saying that Fed was the “moral victor” yesterday.

My view is that the Big 3 are very close to each other and too many of these debates, while fun, don’t make much sense. There is not as big a difference between the 3 as some in the fan bases would make it out to be.

It does help knowing I'm not the only one. I've been inconsolable. I try to remind myself no one died. Federer had his wife to give him a hug after. His kids are going to hug him and couldn't care less about what happened. He has reminders of what is truly important in life.

This what I was refering to. Really humble fans here, trying to pour salt in the wounds instead of being respectful.

First, it's totally normal to still be gutted by Fed's loss yesterday. This one will sting forever, how could it not? That pain is legit, but why do you care about what other fan bases said yesterday? I must have them all on ignore because I saw mostly respect. If you're so adversely affected by what strangers say about Roger on the Internet, put them on ignore and the Forum will instantly become a more pleasant place. :)

Listen. Do not be sad. You have a virtual hug from me (y). It's just tennis. It's like life, you just don't know what's gonna happen next day. You might lose your job, you might get hit by a drunk driver. You might win lottery too :). It will pass. My simple explanation is that Novak played the bigger points better. That's why he won.

As for the crowd. It was expected and Djokovic was dealing fine with it. It would be nice if the is crowd always neutral but it is what it is. They love Fed.

What the OP is going to have to understand is that one fan's agony is another fan's ecstasy.

Watching Djokovic save two Championship points against Federer and go on to win the title was one of the greatest moments many people have experienced in watching sport. The fact it silenced a shamefully partisan crowd just made it all the sweeter. It felt as if sporting justice had been served.

The idea that everyone has to go into a respectful period of mourning to placate grieving Federer fans is-frankly- laughable.

He blew it. Millions of us loved seeing him blow it. You'll have to learn to deal with it. It's called watching sport.

I really expected Djoko to win, and it would be ok if he won clearly. But losing like this, with two MPs... Thats tough.

But important to remember that they all have losses like this. Federer probably the most, but he also has most slams :)

Also interesting to read Feds own thoughts on the matter, which of course changes with age. When he was younger he was obsessed with breaking the record. Then you break it and you need to find motivation other places. Now his main goal isnt to stay ahead anymore, every record gets broken.

Federer should've held the trophy, but it wasn't meant to be for whatever reason. It really sucks as a fan. I saw that his game was where it needed to be and it still wasn't enough in the end. Just remember everyone that he still beat Nadal and most thought that he couldn't do that.

Listen, in all seriousness. Federer was better yesterday, but its not Novaks fault that Roger choked on most important points. Unforced errors in tiebreaks was 11 for Federer and 0 for Novak.

To be honest Federer didn't look that bothered even in the on court runner up speech, he recognised himself it was an epic final to be in that will be remembered for ages. Obviously he would've wanted to come out as THE winner but he knew it was a great match to be a part of
