In/Out Device

So ALL in all,, Does this device work or not ????? Can it be used to Resolve Dispute on the Line calls during the league match ????? TOO MANY Cheater in USTA leagues,,,, we just need something like challenge system,,when there is Fishy call, we want to be able to dispute it and see if it can be settled using this device ..............

Definitely not there yet, nope! This device would either interest you now for the stats, recording, and tech factor, or it might interest you in a few months after many more revisions for the line calling.

I also get no stats at all when i import sessions to the app on my android :

You have to fix all those triangle exclamations, then disconnect from the device while on this screen and press the button "sync now" to get your stats.

And yet the device isn't called the "stats, recording and tech factor" device. It is called "In/Out."

"Hey, look at this $250,000 Ferrari."

"How fast is it?"

"It doesn't have an engine."

"WTF?!?"

"But, it has a cool cup holder, manual windows and shiny 24 inch rims!"

You have a point there. But members of this forum neither have the interest / probably don’t care about name deep enough nor the power to force a name change.

Even if it was 100% accurate, a cheater would never agree to use it unless it was forced on them.

I had a singles practice yesterday. It's an indoor carpet court.

Here's how I put cushions around the device. It doesn't look neat but it works. I'll find a way not to cover the heat sink next time.
https://1drv.ms/i/s!AtY6ClEnF6NsimHffTEnKqrfs8PW

The court calibration was a big problem. It took more than 10 attempts. Once it found the court, it got much faster, like in 3 or 4 attempts. But the calibration screen started showing a picture of some other court, obviously the one in the sample video. So I couldn't tell if the green lines were aligned correctly.

I had all the signals on, so I could tell if the device was catching the shots properly. I guess more than 95% of the shots are called. It misses out calls more often than in calls. There were close shots on the baseline. It missed half of those calls. It was disappointing because that's where we want calls. Calls made on lines were almost correct. I can't review it because the video is lost.

Yes, the video file of the main session got broken. It's lost. I expected to watch point replays but I can't. It's a pity.

Here's the chart of shot placement. I am ElMago and the hitting partner is a coach. We only had cross court rallies. You can tell how consistent he is and I'm not. My shots are evenly scattered in a wide area but the coach is hitting back to the smaller spot.
https://1drv.ms/i/s!AtY6ClEnF6NsimIy4QKtvjqzt2o0

Edit: I changed the images to simple links. Hope this works.
For the lost video, how long did your session last ? Maybe the cushions block the air vents and the device gets too hot
For calibration, you have reached a hidden screen that I discovered some time ago.
Indeed in the calibration screen, if you touch the screen in the right corner at the bottom, you'll reach the sample video demo.
To go back to your court, touch again the same area.
In the sample video demo, you can push "Find lines" and "Line Calling" and you can review 7 demo shots of the sample video ;)

Ah

First err i noticed is if I'm already inside the in out app and connect to the wifi after the app is already open. I need to restart the app for it to show "connected to in out", Then I need to close the app, disconnect from the wifi. Then re open the app again for it to work. It would be a nice with a button for disconnecting and connecting from inside the app.

Would also be nice if you could import videos from the memory card to the phone and not just from the internal memory.

MY session was about 30 minuets. I’ll think of something for the heat sink anyway.

Thank you for your advice about the calibration. I’m happy now that I know what it is. You seem to know everything.

Played with it again today. Had it set to only report balls that were out with sound and flash. As you can see its a bit random :)

Wow. There were some really random calls by the device.

Is there any pattern you noticed during the times it messes up? From your video it didn't look like anything weird happened like you obstructing the line of sight with your body, etc. Just looked like a simple baseline rally, where I would have expected it to perform well consistently.

Kind of makes me question how accurate the keeping track of where the ball lands will be for charting where shots go.

I think it must be picking up other stuff as the ball like racket, shoes e.g. I noticed this when i reviewed some calls and you see the little video replay snippet. Sometimes it was the shoe. Mine are yellow so i understand it gets confused.

Just put up the device and say you video yourself for training purposes. Any cheater would be a bit more careful with the calls I'm sure if they know they are on video. Then upload it to youtube and let the trolls rip into him in the comments section :)

Well, I was charging the device today for a session this afternoon and the battery pulled out with the cable. The battery would not re-insert because the mechanism was still in the 'battery locked in the device' position. I took an allen key and pushed the mechanism like I want to take the battery out which allowed me to re-insert the battery, but it went to far. It is now stuck in the device and will not start up. I think the contacts are not aligned for power.

I do not see any way to fix this other than opening up the case. I did place a ticket, but wanted to give a warning to be careful with the batter and it may be best pull it out before charging.

Good luck, mine broke the first night I received it and I shipped it back nearly a month ago. I keep receiving promises that it is fixed and shipped, but it has yet to arrive. His communication about issues is insufficient and you have to chase him to get the most basic reply. He claims to have shipped mine Monday, which would have been delivered yesterday, but it didn't even arrive today.
I'm really upset because I was planning to video a league match with it tonight - heck, I was hoping to video Monday's match as well, but it just adds to the overall letdown.
I guess I'll just setup the GoPro, which works (inside joke regarding his past Twitter post) and get a single angle.

I showed the shot placement chart to my coach. He was quite impressed. He mentioned Djokovic buys data from HawkEye. Does he? Anyway, I’ve been inclined to line calling rather than stats. But these data are useful.

Ok 2nd time out. Nearly flawless in detecting the same court. Go figure. Line calls were generally good, but I did note a few clear wrong calls, which I marked and submitted. These were mostly at the far baseline on fast shots.

I set it to line call + video. Got home and 4 videos were “broken”. No sd card, just using internal memory [emoji19] so does that mean I lost the shot data as well?

I erased the broken videos and then connected to the app. The data were still there and successfully found.

I think my device is definitely overheating and shutting down. I checked after it had crashed the temp said 95C. I'ts when its recording video and doing line calls at same time it heats up.

Was able to tryout the device, finally!

I couldn’t find the court, no matter what I tried. I almost gave up on it and then it recognized. I used net post. Bright and sunny conditions.Line calling is not accurate. Too Many misses. I am also not sure if it lost calibration during the session. If anyone has tips on how to find court quickly and consistently, I would appreciate.

The stats sheet is what most impressed me and my friend. We both felt that the ball placement and percentages are reflective of how things played out, even with those misses. I already feel I have more insights on my game than I ever did.

The hardware and software is clearly beta and work in progress. Menu’s are not yet intuitive , hardware appears fragile.

I’m very impressed with the packaging and responsiveness.

Try tilting the unit downward bit-by-bit until it detects.

Congrats! I agree that the shot placements tell a lot of things. Everyone should see his own data.

Well the 3rd outing was a bust. Got a similar indoor court with probably a bit less lighting, so it couldn't detect the court at all. Just used the video capture, though I did note that in the videos, the alignment was a bit off, not all lines were in the picture. Maybe it was my fault....

I got to try it out again for the third time. It sensed the court, tracked some of the balls, and then started calling almost everything out as if it was extremely pissed off. It sensed the white Rafa logo on my jacket as a ball and it didn't recognize a ball that went out of its field of view that spun into the court. The last time I took it out, the camera decided to not work properly and somehow I got video recording of one side of the court only on both halves of the screen as well as screen glitching it seems. The more I pull this out on the court, the more I am looking like a fool to friends. I am doing more tests but I am definitely not impressed and hope my device isn't defective :(

the device is recording at 720p@30fps

Has anyone tried faster serve?

I tested it out again yesterday and it made some calls accurately during the doubles match but a lot of the time, it was sensing random things such as player butt caps, logos, shoes, bright strings. Does anyone have any tips that would help?

It goes that way in doubles at the moment. We should wait for the release of version 1.1.

Hey mine did this too - the screen started glitching and one side of the court started showing for both cameras! I submitted a ticket, Gregoire thought my camera might be loose but that's a coincidence if you also had the same issue.

Also, I agree, I don't bring out the device really except to test it during practice. There's just way too many problems currently to be confident in it. Crashing, glitching, only "practice" mode, no ability to swap ends (so the stats are all wrong if we're changing sides), constant beeps from my shoes or clothes or racquet being detected as balls, etc.

ROADMAP (from http://support.inout.tennis/roadmap)

status.png

A second-stage beta version will have:
  • "Match Single" and serve training modes
Version 1.0 will include:
  • Best possible court calibration
  • Best possible line calling accuracy
Version 1.1 will include:
  • Speed of ball and shots type in the statistics
  • "Match Double" mode

The version 1.0 will be very important. It’ll show the basic potential of how far this device can go.

I think I swap ends in the Line Call screen by touching on the word "Opponent" or "Myself".

In the hidden match mode right? I meant for the practice mode there's no way to do this (unless I didn't find it).

It's in regular Practice Mode. I tap on "Opponent" or "Myself".

In addition, during the data upload to cloud, I can specify which side for opponent and myself.

Yes this is what I'm used to, when I upload a session I choose which side I'm on... So that doesn't really make sense, if it's set in the practice mode then why do you have to set it again later? And does setting it during the upload overwrite the entire session to have you on one side?

Well, more ways to change or correct the "opponent" or "myself" side.

So far, I have not had a recorded session in which I played on one end and swapped ends.

Maybe in the future version, it will be able to recognize all players and provide the stats accordingly. :)

Below a picture that explains how I screw the In/Out device on top of a mini tripod ball head in order to pan/tilt it more easily during court calibration.
In my last in/out test, the first with this mini-tripod attachment, the court calibration was successful on my first or second try in all of my 3 indoor courts on each side (plus one side on one outdoor clay court).
This is the first time that this calibration process has worked as well. But perhaps also related to lighting improvement.

Even thought at moment the device is not close to true potential.

I hope this device will gain just a bit of traction in market so it brings other competitors to market.

Maybe separate the device in two parts one for each side of court and mount it away from net post have it at higher angle with better high speed and resolution camera.

It wouldn't even need to talk to the other device just have its own rectangle on half of court and make calls.

Yes it has potential but hard to bring customers if the unit prices go over $500.
Looks like it might be impossible to be more accurate unless 4 to 6 cameras can monitor lines.

New beta is available. I tested HDMI audio. It was good.

It says false positive calls are improved. I'll test it in doubles matches on Friday.

Next beta will have a ball speed feature. That'll be interesting especially for service practice.

Lots of good stuff in this new firmware

Release 2017-12-05
New features:

  • Serve training modes are enabled.
  • Light and/or sound for only close call is possible (in the custom mode of Signal).
  • Repairing a video is possible if the video is broken (after a hard shutdown during record for instance).
Fixed bugs:

  • Court detection has been improved again in difficult light conditions.
  • Number of false positive balls (ball detected but it's not a ball) is considerably reduced.
  • Video record and replay is more reliable.
  • Dead pixels in the camera are correctly interpolated after three seconds of videos in "record only" mode.
  • Kernel debug information doesn't appear on HDMI output any more.
  • Audio is sent through the HDMI output.
  • Scrolling in the "Video" screen is improved.
  • Unpairing two devices works now as it's supposed to be.
