Another spectacular Kyrgios meltdown: Cincinatti 2018 Edition

Fabresque

Legend
This time he goes down a break in the third after splitting the first two sets 6-7 and 7-6 with Juan Martin Del Potro. After getting broken early, he proceeds to tank the return games and tanked any points on his serve where they went more than 5-6 strokes. He received a warning for audible obscenity and a point penalty for racquet abuse. He lost the set 2-6.

Why can’t he take a page out of Lleyton Hewitt’s book? Even after struggling with injuries during his later career and getting constantly swept aside by Federer, he would always fight tooth and nail through the bitter end. I hoped when Lleyton started working with him a bit that he’d take after him and really start pulling through in tough matches. I guess not. I’m not sure what to really think of this guy. Or how to think of anything positive for this guy.

Oh comon

This was the most justified tank ever. And yes, such a thing exists.

Match was over after the first game in the third, I'm disappointed he didn't even bother smashing rackets, berating umpires and only gave up on one point.

Because they have radically different DNA: Hewitt worked hard to compensate for a lack of natural talent. Nick has the reverse problem: he is oozing with talent, but will never put in the hard work.

I know there will be people now who point out, "Hewitt was not untalented, he got to be #1 in the world!" True, but like Lendl, he's not tremendously talented. Nick is and he squanders it, time and time again.

By taking a page out of Hewitts book and really using his talent he can be a great player

Every player in the Top 100-200 under the age of 25 is generally pretty talented to be there, and that includes Hewitt. You can’t have no talent and reach Number 1 by age 21

Was hilarious when the ball boy throws ball to him and he just ignores it and walks over to the other ball boy. lol
Del Potro destroyed his momentum by taking a 10 minute “bathroom break”

Blatant cheating. Should’ve been defaulted.

When you gotta go you gotta go.

The ''gentle giant'' would never use such disgusting stalling tactics. Not our ''gentle giant''. Not good ol JMDP, a man that has never once sinned.

He didn't do anything illegal. 9 mins break after 2 tough sets is not abnormal, also the locker room is a bit far from the grand stand. Don't blame him for Kyrgios' inability to remain focused.

How long does it take to have a slash? Only about 1-2 minutes, including hand washing and drying time. Any ''bathroom break'' longer than 3-4 minutes is pure gamesmanship.

I know that it appears to be a taboo on these forums to speak ill of Del Potro, but the guy is hardly a paragon of sportsmanship. Not that he's necessarily a bad sportsman, but he's just not a particularly good one.

Having said that, Kyrgios should obviously not have let the gamesmanship get to him. Once again, he's proved that he's just not cut-out to be a really top professional tennis player. He's 23 now, and I doubt that he'll ever be a major contender at the very top.

I agree, but the main fault is with the rules or umpire. Breaks should not be allowed, for any reason, during a match. Especially a bathroom break after the first set. When did they start this Nonsense?

Not really. Many TTW kiddies have been whining about him ever since he made his comeback in 2016. Double standards as always. Del has always been a competitive Sob, if you don't know it, you probably started watching tennis in 2017. And some of the Murray believers (99% of them from the UK as always) are somewhat butthurt (?) because he insulted their whiny countryman. It's funny how all of them overlook the shady sportsmanship that Murray has shown over years. This is classic TTW.

I've only been on TTW since 2016, but I've been playing, watching and following tennis since I was a a very young kid (in the late 1980's).

From what I've seen on TTW, it appears to be taboo to criticise Del Potro or Wawrinka for anything other than on-court performance.

Also, even so I'm British, that supposed Del Potro-Murray ''confrontation'' is ridiculous. Juan wasn't saying something along the lines of ''your mum'' in a cussing sense. It was just heat of battle stuff, which doesn't need to be dwelt upon at all.

I'm also not entirely a fan of Andy Murray's on-court antics, so I wouldn't hold him up as a paragon of sportsmanship, either.

I was at the ground. Quite unfortunate. It was a great match for the first 2 sets, and the crowd was in it. In fact I hung around to watch this one rather than the djoko-dimitrov match that started on center, but it turned out to be a bad choice in the end.

My bad, I should've said "you weren't active on here when he was getting "hate"

I was just stating the reasons why some folks don't like him. And if you dig deep, you'll find people bashing them both.

I believe we all know whom it is taboo to criticize. It certainly isn't Delpo - which is obvious from the plethora of negative comments.

I've tried to get behind him before, but i've given up on him. Kyrgios is a total d*uch^bag.

Well done Del Potro! Now that's a true champion.....Kyrgios should take a leaf out of Delpo's book.

Looking forward to a Federer vs Delpo SF.

He isn’t a paragon of sportsmanship, Ivanisevic hit out at JMDP for time wasting and got major **** for it by everyone

I am not a Nick fan but you're kind of blowing this out of proportion. He got the language penalty after losing an important point towards the end of the 1st or 2nd, and he had a legit point. In either case it was not part of the meltdown and he won the second set.

Similarly, the racket smash was after getting broken early in the third. He was ticked.

He definitely stopped giving effort after that though. Third set was disappointing.

Are you serious? I know guys who spend half an hour on the toilet just to get away from the wife and kids. Delpo probably just wanted a few minutes to check his shares or the golf scores or something.....

In HK the mainland Chinese just use the streets - saw an episode in each of my last 2 visits - sad.

In the other thread it was mentioned the grandstand court didn’t have a facility for the players - or it’s a long walk. I’m going Delpo the benefit of the doubt unless there’s real evidence he wasted time.

You gotta take the good with the bad with Nick. And by that I mean 70pc choking, tanking, poor fitness, box abuse for the 30pc ridiculous serving, touch, antics and 185kph fearhands. I find the immaturity and antics refreshing and amusing, partly because it reminds me of my tennis when I was truly competitive: my early teenage years.

Nick was one of those chubby kids, like me, who didn't really like the game. The fact that he made it this far is testament to his talent, with modern sports science and his mum somehow keeping the show on the road. He is tall with a huge serve and reach so he can now be even lazier on court, so unless he gets his act together he'll always be a chubby kid player to me.

He played some frankly ridiculous tennis vs Wawrinka in the R1 Toronto loss too. I'd love to go drinking with him, Bernie and Fog. Can't say that about most of the other guys on tour.

Kyrgios would never have been as good of a groundstroker/returner as Lleyton Hewitt was at his best, no matter how hard he worked. The only thing Kyrgios was demonstrably better at was serving, and that with a 6' height advantage.

The young Aussie's problem is in-match effort. His off-court regimen is fine. He just needs an out when he's losing. It serves as a very convenient scapegoat.

2 minutes?? We don't all have golden bowels!

Barring a dodgy meal the night before, there's no valid reason for a professional sportsperson to have a case of numero dos.

It's obvious that they want a 30-40 second urination break, but claim 10 minutes for their efforts.

And, after that, Nick actually turned his back on a shot that was still in play. Why didn't the ump dock him then as well? He literally turned his back when Delpo was returning. That's an official tank. Yet they didn't call it. It's a black mark on the sport.

I've seen Nick in action when he is being a jerk. He can be a real jerk. I've felt sorry for him as a person with some clear mental health challenges, but that doesn't mean that he should be allowed to flaunt fair play.

(and, yes, Delpo can 'play games', but he didn't tank play.)

he loses focus and says some dumb things, but the tennis world's response to him really shows how stodgy, arbitrary and controlling an institution this is.

i'd be pissed if i was a grown ass adult and i couldn't freely speak negatively about someone else or trash my racquet because i'm upset at my performance.

not a fan of his game, but even if though he does things like tanking, he's helping tennis by virtue of being human, being interesting and drawing people under the age of 95 to the land of the WASP.
