Serena turns 37 in a few weeks, so she will obviously retire "soon". But how soon?

I had predicted before the US Open that she would take the title and retire at the trophy presentation (a la Sampras). I think that was her plan. The perfect fairytale ending (and it would have been). Not winning the US Open cost her that (and I think was a huge part of why she was so angry). And with the loss (and all that surrounded it), it's not clear she really can have that fairytale ending in front of the New York crowd, even if she were to win it next year and retire. Sad I think. She really deserves it for all she's done for the sport over the past 2 decades.

If she wants to have another child (and I think she does), then I'd guess she'll be pregnant again anytime now and I can't see her coming back to play after that.

So, when will she retire?

I think there is a real possibility she could "shock the world" and announce her retirement in the next few weeks. Combination of a bad taste in her mouth from US Open (and wanting to punish the tour / show how much they need her (and they do)) and the fact that she will probably want to get pregnant soon.

The tour is far too weak for her to hang em' up and frankly I believe it is too weak to prevent her from winning another slam or two.

Serena demonstrated a lack of fitness this season, however, and I think she will need to work harder than she'd care to to climb the mountain again. The question is how hungry is she.

I think this is why she bothered to come back at all after the birth of her child. So I do think this is her ONLY motivation to keep playing.

She was exactly 2 wins away from surpassing Court this year. If she had, no doubt in my mind she would have retired at US Open (which is what I think she had in mind when she came back).

But, will this continue to motivate her to keep playing? I'm not sure. If it were Graf or Evert or Navratilova ahead of her, then she would for sure stay until she surpassed them. But nobody really takes Court's record all that seriously.

Should have I extended the poll choices past 2023? She'll be 42. I would assume she would probably retire by that time at least. But if that offends you, I can extend the choices as far out as you want (if I can edit the poll still).

How far out would you like me to extend the choices?

I'm interested to see how Mouratoglou admitting to coaching plays out with her behind closed doors. He basically undermined most of her argument by his admission. As Flink points out in his article she had to know what that gesture meant otherwise Mouratoglou won't have used it. Also Although a good number of articles support what she did, it is interesting to see those like Steven A Smith that have criticized her. Serena can't be happy about that.

Unless you have evidence Mirka and Roger had IV, which is most likely to produce twins or more? Which is what you appear to be implying. Does that mean Roger’s sister who has twins as well also did? Or does it mean twins just run in the family?

She always said she'll stop when Venus stops. Martina played doubles until age 50? with doubles prize money at $700k and they can continue to market themselves, it'll be at least 5-10 years before she stops.

It's just a coincidence that I hate Lewis Hamilton, Nafi Thiam, Serena Williams, Kyrie Irving, LeBron James, Wayde Van Niekerk and Michael Johnson. It has nothing to do with the colour of their skin, I just happen to hate them.


Especially Lewis Hamilton. I've never supported him in the past and never will in the future.

PS, And my favourite football player will NEVER be Pelé. He doesn't really compare to players like Maradona, Cruyff, Zidane or Messi and instead he's only in the same league as guys like Thierry Henry, Eusebio and Emile Heskey.

I'm a big fan of Lewis Hamilton, best talent in F1 at the moment along with Vettel. Kyrie Irving is one of my favorite BBall players.

Yeah Kyrie's handles are wicked good and he's just brilliant to watch. I agree Lewis Hamilton is the best talent in F1 at the moment, but not along with Vettel based on Vettel's mistakes this year. He's had bulletproof reliability and the faster car and still trails Lewis by 30 points despite Lewis having a gearbox penalty and a mechanical DNF.

Let's see if Leclerc gives Vettel a kick up the backside in 2019, but Ferrari still have good chances for both Championships this year - they still have the best car, after all.

You know what gets an athlete to retire is when they feel they can no longer compete and they are being beaten. Guess what? Serena is still credible even at her age. If the young up and comers want her to retire then beat her and she will then hang up her racket but until then she will be a contendor for a few more years to come.

Just like some folks are ready for the new gen on the male side to take over it isn't happening because none of them can contend with the top 3-4 in slams yet. New gen, if you want these players to retire then do something about it and start winning. Stop whining about when they will retire because in a way it is you're own doing. As a fan of tennis for a few decades I can honestly say there are tons of talent out there but not enough belief to win against the aging players.

Maybe there is too much respect for them? Hey, I'm all for respect for the legends but if I had the talent to beat these guys and I was an up and comer, respect for them would be second and beating them would be my priority. I recall when a young Martina Hingis as a teenager was beating a majority of players in her gen to include the likes of Steffie Graf. She insisted that some of these players should just retire. Arrogance on her part? Perhaps, but she believed and that was why she was successful at an early age.

Reminds me of his 2010 season which he was lucky to scrape through despite having the best car. Alonso didn't have the cleanest season either but was very close to the Championship in an inferior setting. Alonso's 2012 was simply legendary and he almost had Vettel in a far worse car. So far in the battle between Hamilton and Vettel, Hamilton has been clearly superior with an edge in 2017 and the clear beating in 2018. Vettel still has time to turn 2018 around if he just stops making errors because the car should generally be the fastest for most of the remaining races.

But it raises the point that despite Serena's undoubted accolades, the way a person carries themself is still important in the sense that "greatest" carries more than just mere accomplishments, but also how one comports oneself.

You'll have to forgive me though. I find Naomi even more charming than Chrissie. ;)

You should have seen me when they embraced each other at the ceremony, with Chris Evert performing a courteous bow.

Let's me a bit more realistic. She'll turn 21 in October, but she won't win no 30 slams, lmao. This one won't be her only slam though. I am sure about it. ;)

PS. I rather liked Evert had a front row seat to see her US Open record not get bettered.

Sorry irrelevant to the discussion, but you do know how twins come about?
They are either the splitting of the female egg so two embryos are produced, or the female releases two eggs at same time. It's all about the female
Rogers sister having twins is irrelevant, Roger is male, he cannot produce the eggs that facilate twins
There is no genetic link between Mirka and rogers sister, therefore it does not "run in the family"

I think it isn't well advised to bet against her, or to hope that se won't win one and then be disappointed when she does.
A player who makes two Slam finals out of two after returning from pregnancy is obviously among the favourites to win any Slam in the near future.

She's an attention ***** spoiled brat at the USO (and countless other examples have showed) . She can't live without the limelight. If she were to retire she would probably end up becoming a train wreck and committing herself to an Asylum

Getting 25 is the goal. If she does it next year I could see her retiring then. Women's tennis will suffer big time when she's gone God knows it.

I have read that the chances of physical and cognative deformation increase with the age of the mother (and father too), with the risks accelerating after age 35. I don't think that they have the luxury of time, seeing that Serena's offspring already have precious little margin for error in the cognative aspect.

Favourite players/athletes are a matter of preference, but comparing Pelé to Heskey is plain insulting.
