I always thought he was a tool but he gave a great press conference after his Milos loss. Not a single excuse, humble, respectful to his opponent, and calmly answered the silly questions. Reminded me of Andy Roddick:


"What do you think went wrong out there?" I played bad. I played horrible.
"Were there any injury concerns?" No.
"You smashed your racquet. Does that help? Does that make you feel better" Yeah it made me feel better.
"Do you often smash your racquet? Have you done it in the past" Have you never watched my matches? You should watch my matches.
"How do you react to this type of result?" Right now I'm not happy but I'm not depressed either. It's fine. It's a tennis match. It's not the end of the world."

And that backhand is amazing. I don't think I've seen anyone hit a backhand that hard.

tbqh his tennis leaves a lot to be desired but he seems like an alright/nice kid off court and he does have a great sense of humor.

why do you assume that they aren't hungry because they don't think its the end of the world? honestly thats an even worse attitude to have and makes it much harder to pick yourself up and move on to the next match and learn from what you did wrong.

also he's a privileged athlete, this is not his livelihood. its his profession and clearly something he is passionate about but i dont think it goes beyond that.

He seems quite likable to me and definitely does have a good sense of humor. Just a few months ago I likely wouldn't have said that but it's been evident and he also seems to have tossed some of that arrogance he used to show. Hope he keeps improving, gets better at the net, develops more variety. Want to see competitive matches from young gen vs. young gen!

I thought he came from middle class, if he's a rich kid I'm never cheering for him. Yes, yes, I know, but you line up two athletes that reach same heights and one was poor and the other rich who do you choose right? No way. That's why Agassi was such a fan favourite, Sampras was middle class, Safin was rich and look how much of a dink he was.

i mean currently. he is now in a position that he can travel, afford the best team, including bringing lendl on to this team, i'm sure gets a lot of sponsors or w/e and etc. i dont know what kind of background he came from but i imagine that he is pretty comfortable.

ofcourse the rags to riches makes for a great story, albeit i often choose who i cheer for based on style of play, sometimes personality comes into as well.

ehh that seems incredibly unfair, as if those 3 guys didnt have their bad moments or low moments. fed is my fav but dont tell me he was never in a funk or didnt have melt downs. novak and nadal (albeit he shows it slightly differently) all have. i'm pretty sure as well when they lose, they are upset might even take a few days or a week to get over it but I'm pretty sure they are not thinking its teh end of the world.

also sascha at this point has been here before so it might be easier for him to just analyze his matches in a way that makes it easier for him to digest versus if he were a few years younger.

Oh he did. That's why he lost in opening round matches 3 of 5 times before his maiden Slam.

I'm down with Zverev as a dude but don't find his tennis that interesting. However, I'm for any of the new guard to make statements in the big events regardless of style right now.

The press conference seems like complete denial. He didn't just play poorly, he failed to compete.

Yup. The end of the world is when you lose a family member, or a close friend to a tragedy. Or see the world go to hell around you in warfare.

Anyone who thinks losing a tennis match is the end of the world, even an ATG, is a fool.

The ATP needs to incorporate faster surfaces to protect the quality of their product. For the nest Gen, they would benefit from having the muscle memory and training on faster surfaces. I think of Taitsipas and his press conference after his Nadal match where he said he felt a step slow and was always off balance. Having more time on faster courts would help against a player like Nadal; certainly it isn't a panacea but it would help in footwork and shotmaking repertoire.

Yep I mean I could kind of imagine that being the case on the juniors because lbr that's just how teens are and they probably haven't learned how to deal with losses and I dhoidk state there are tennis players who probably do see moving to the next round as part of their livelihood because they dont hsvr as much money but people like the big 3 aren't thinking like that and in sure sascha isnt either

I don’t find this interview particularly humble. When getting destroyed 1-6,1-6,6-7 there is not much space for excuses anyways. He didn’t claim to be injured but neither can I read him acknowledging how well Raonic played.

He's already a millionaire. The hunger is probably slowly dissipating for that reason and he's starting to see tennis as just a 9 to 5 job.

Of course a match is way more important when that's how you make your living, and you are right. Teens have no sense of importance except for those who have to grow up really fast, the ones who assume adult responsibility very early in life. I had no idea what was really important when I was young, and you probably didn't either. That's just the way the world works! ;)

Your last sentence actually IS the problem. They earn that much money with tennis these days that being NEAR the top is more than enough, if they only play for their livelihood. Just look at Bernard Tomic who is busy counting his millions.

A player has to play for honor and glory to become the best player in the world. Nobody impersonates that attitude better than the Big 3, anyone in his own fashion.

I agree with all of this except one word. I would change "even an ATG" to "especially an ATG." ATGs have less riding on matches than other players, not more. They don't need the money, other players do. It's pure ego for them. For example, a Slam final (actually as unimportant a match as it's possible to play) must be more important for someone who's never won a Slam than for someone who can go from 14 to 15 Slam titles or from 17 to 18 or from 20 to 21.

I absolutely agree, helter. The filthy rich players, they don't need more money. They are after more name and fame. In other words, their ego is in play here which is well disguised. And the fanbases are supporting their ego too becasue if you support them, you support their agenda at least at this point.

For other players, it's their income. I remember when Goran said that he had only two shirts at that Wimbledon where he won and how he'd have to wash it every day to have it ready for the next day. That's why his Wimbledon feels so precious to me. And there are lots of other players who are unable to take their whole team when they travel from tournament to another, because they can't afford it.

I think that rings true once the match is done. When the match is on it's more enthralling if the players play as though it will be the end of the world if they lose. The memorable matches are the ones where you know both players are driving themselves to their limit, something I don't think we've seen with Zverev at slam level.
