Yeah I started watching tennis around 05 so I didn't see those days. I wish I had. For me I really hope after the big 3 we find some more of that.
I've been watching tennis mostly likely before you were born. (do you want to trade places?) I've been avidly watching and playing for over 45 years. And in my opinion, the best tennis is right now. The elegance of Federer, the agility of Djokovic, the athleticism of Nadal, the backhand of Wawrinka, the del Potro forehand... and that isnt even mentioning Murray and his successes.
Tennis players of today have better equipment - not only rackets, shoes, but technical/computer support to further hone their games. There are academies as well. And physios and medical treatments, improved surgeries to get players back, better, faster. Ice baths and better training regimes. It is said Lendl was the first player who gained an edge by being in good shape. McEnroe 'trained' by playing doubles. They have easier travel today too. And roof-covered majors - soon to be 4- for less uncertainty.
There are also more, better players from around the world. 'Back then' there mainly were the Aussies, Americans, and eventually Becker and ... (the other German guy)(Stchick - or however he spells it). A Spaniard or two who stuck with clay. There were few if any players from former Iron Curtain countries. Then that fell. Martina had to literally defect, for example. Then when things opened up further, we got Kafelnikof and Safin. And today we have even more, with Djoko at the head of the list. And now we're getting more players from the Orient too.
It's a much better time in tennis now. It's definitely more polished and with greater prize money. But a weaker era? I don't think so. Enjoy who we have now in Fed, Nad, and Djoko and the others - we might never be so lucky again. Every single one of them.
