'Roger revealed', long special on Fedr (it was shown in multiple smaller clips a few months ago). Click the cnn.com link in tweet for the video:

this was a good read and some really great words from roddick. I know people got caught up with that 15 jacket and fed stumbling over his words to comfort andy but saying he understood his pain got people angry, but it was reading about how he tried to downplay his celebration in teh locker room. I think andy brought that up back in 2013 when he interviewed him.

Who is reporting that?

Sources?

I don’t have a shoe deal. For now, I will be wearing Nike,” he said. “They have shown interest to have a shoe deal with me, as well. Ties are not broken there."

"It is also conceivable that he agrees a shoe deal with Nike, a company he is still in contact with"

"Also, the Japanese brand doesn’t manufacture shoes so therefore the Swoosh continues to supply Roger Federer with the footwear and which has kept the Federer-Nike relationship intact to an extent."

Everything's been about how a Nike deal is still possible, but no deal was every reported on that I can find. If he has a shoe deal, it was done in private. I also watch the majority of his press conferences and can tell you there have been a couple of questions over the past year from reporters checking in if there's any news on that front. Usually it's just a "nothing new, hoping to get a deal done" non-answer.

Personally, I think the friction over the RF logo rights has been the main reason neither side has been able to agree to a long-term shoe deal.

Anybody nervous for the draw? I know I am. Who do we not want? Do we want Rafa in our draw or not?

tbh that really is a decent draw, i'd say he probably got the softest of the big 3, maybe it starts getting tricky from coric? obviously his toughest will be the sf/f combo but who knows if nadal will get that far.

FINALLY! The Old Man got a good draw. There IS a draw god, and he finally felt pity for Fedr .
Get dat trophy Fedr! :giggle:
That Halle19 win is lookin bettah and bettah 8-B.

If nothing else changed, that 'could've' been Nadl's draw :happydevil:, while Fedr would instead have to go through the...

#3 seed's draw of:
R1: Sugita
R2: Kyrgios
R3: Shapovalov/Tsonga
R4: Cilic
QF: Thiem
SF: Federer
F: Djokovic

yeah my only concern is fed not being testing before a potential rafa/nole combo. I'm still hoping rafa flops in r2

For once, I’m quite happy with Roger’s draw. Could be better if Nadal was on the other side but I doubt he’s making he semis anyway.

Re. the show deal, if Roger is wearing their shoes anyway, to some extent he has to, why would NIKE agree on a deal while they can get it for free already? Saves millions a year.

That statement is from way back (basically at the wake of the switch to Uniqlo) and even then he said that Nike are interested in having a deal with him and that he will be "wearing Nike for now" which is an implication that he will be doing a short term work with them. Nike also provided him with shoes with his logo recently, so that indicates that they are working with him on his shoes, which shows that they are not only shoes to have something to play in.

From a practical point of view, and in today's world of endorsements of high figures the suggestion that Federer promotes a company for free while being a living legend is ludicrous. It is not happening, no matter how much accustomed to his shoes he is. These players are out there to win as much as they can, and they also have agents that want their cut from any potential deal.

So why would the deal not be announced? What do they have to gain by not telling the world they're working together again?

Nadal might regret not getting up early a couple of days to protect his (then :happydevil:) #2 seed. Of course, it would have been better for Fed, if Nadsy was in the other half, but since apparently it is Djoko's turn to have it easy after the Nadal, we can't have everything.

Still, Federer will make his own fortunes here. So, Chum Jetze!

His draw is not that bad. Only bad thing I see is NK. Other than that, I think he is the better player and should win. Thiem is not a tough QF.

My guess is because they haven't reached a long term deal, which is different than having no deal. As I already said, probably the legal issues around the logo create some tensions or indeed legal problems before the correct and desirable long term contract, so they are looking to resolve that before signing something that might turn out to be a massive problem because they have rushed the decision. They are probably working on some sort of short term multiple contracts (maybe even such that automatically renew themselves unless something else is decided form one of the parties), which explains also why Nike is not producing anything as a Fed line: they simply don't know early enough that he will be with them to plan ahead with such lines.

Or Nike is testing the waters without him. Maybe Nike sees numbers are not dipping. They got several shoes now, and FAA and some other young guys might be a hit soon. However, I know I have not bought a Nike item since the move, have not bought Uniqlo either (mainly lack of opportunities to do so).

I don't think that that is the case, as firstly, Federer will remain most popular ambassador for the Vapors, regardless of what the others do, and secondly Federer himself won't allow to be kept on his toes whether he will continue to have shoes or he should start negotiations with other companies.

As for buying stuff, I buy what I like and find worth it. Nike's prices went off rails a very long time ago, so I stopped buying their stuff in 2014, and their absurd designs in recent years are not making it any better. I have always been a fan of the Lacoste quality, so I buy mainly their stuff, but I don't buy things from them because they are Lacoste either. There are plenty of options out there, so on reasonable people Federer can work his magic only until they see for themselves whether what he advertises is worth it. I bought the RG outfit just to test the quality, and it is very good, so I will probably buy more when I like something, but since I am able to buy Lacoste stuff at those prices, and Adidas even lower, I will probably continue to have more of those.

Have you ever thought Fed simply does not want to try new shoes this late in the game? He is a stubborn guy. Switching clothing is one thing, shoes is completely different, as he has mentioned this many time when he has talked about colabs and such.

I get you can mold shoes to your foot, but maybe Fed knows it still won't feel the same. Rackets can do the same, but he would not leave Wilson at this point in his career.

I have thought of that, and I find it highly probable too, but not because he won't find the same level of execution, performance or comfort elsewhere, but just because many people are simply not fixing things that aren't broken. However, like I said, he is a pro player, so if they don't pay him it is broken, that is why I am of the opinion that he is still paid (probably handsomely) to wear those shoes.

Rackets are a completely different matter to me. Without exception every racquet change after a long time use has been a long affair with considerable time for adjustment. Not so with shoes, and if we are to be realistic, shoes are shoes. There isn't much difference between them. The biggest one is fit, and Federer won't have such a problem regardless of brand. If Yonex, who is relatively small company compared to the likes of Adidas and Nike can produce custom shoes for Stan, any company their size and with their expertise or greater can. Djokovic made a seamless switch from Adidas to Asics, so it won't be any different for Federer.

I think eventually he will have something like Nishi but to a much greater extent. Nishi has a deal where Nike sells colabs and special editions for him (not often but from time to time). Nike probably wants it more for after tennis like they did with Agassi retros.

Yes, it's ... different I'd say.

Interviews like that is why Fedr is such a unique sportsman for me. He's so Joe-next-door but jeez, what a phenom. In contrast, see Jordan or Ali. They can't wait to shout to the world how great(est) they are. Then you have Fedr, asking juniors about everything, as if 'he' was the junior (or fan) speaking to a veteran, just as he was asking this reporter questions. The reporter explicitly states that such a thing basically never happens to him over the years.

After 20 yrs on tour, he still greets fans and everyone as if it was his 1st. It's an unteachable trait. Unique.

Fedr is really the perfect blend of everything. There's not much more well-put-together a champ than that. How the world gravitates/reacts to him proves this.

This to me, is why no matter what the slam race is, or any other records, his on court combined with off court is why he is GOAT.

So many options to choose from, and he goes with that? Maybe he's just saying that for motivation.

Idk if it's even in my top 10 Fedr disappointments.

I had thought similarly, too. But if I were to guess, I think it's a combination of:

1) Close Wimbley loss from a commanding, blowout lead.
2) WB loss from MP up.
3) 'having' MP while semi-injured, and trying hard yet still couldn't gut it out in sets 3-5.
4) bc at tail-end of career, esp. at WB.
5) MP-up against Anderson, a much lesser player, instead of vs. Djokr (USO10 & 11), but it feels even worse bc it's at WB.

Maybe it's bc he was defending champ as well, and he expected more from himself as a result. MP's up at USO10 & 11 against Djokr, he was not defending champ, and it was NOT in set 3, but set 5. Having MP in set 3 and losing in 5 has gotta sting more. And at WB, it's doubly so, maybe?

All points are definitely true. I think it just doesn't sting as much to me because it was only a quarter-final. He still had so much work to do, it wasn't like some other losses where it felt he already had one hand on the trophy.

I get what you mean. I suppose we can chalk that down to the feelings of the fans' vs. the player's.

I thought that tidbit of detail from Fedr was illuminating bc I wouldn't think that way had he not said it. It shines light into him as the one experiencing it, and that the round in which he lost may not be the most important aspect, but the circumstances are.
