Two similar Wimbledon championship points for Federer (2019 and 2012). Different Outcomes

Very tentative approach shot against Novak

Maybe the last missed forehand on the first approach shot was weighing on Fed's mind?

Unbelievable how similar it is.

The difference is that the serve spot against Djoko was bad (it was first serve in). Also the return shot from Fed against Murray was closer to the side line. If Fed was able to get the same placement against Djoko, he would have time to finish it at the net. So the Wimbledon trophy was within reach by a matter of mere inches.

Anybody care to comment on Federer's stance? Open stance against Murray, closed against Novak. Feel like he also could have stepped through that shot but he didn't. I dunno, just a lowly 3.5/4.0 scrub here.

yep, cramped himself I think. He was late to get to his right against Djoko.

I've done my best to not go back and look at highlights. I remembered the first serve being weak, but I didn't remember just how bad the forehand was.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but he even would've been better off with one of those stupid inside-out fh drop shots he always tries at the worst times.

It would not have been a bad play at all.

By the time Djoker hit the ball it was already too late to move.
a) He never should have approached on such a lousy shot.
b) Once he decided to approach, he should go straight to the center of the court, not remain on the side!

That's incredible. The differences appear so slight: In '12 Federer hit the ball ever a bit closer to the sideline and ever so slightly deeper than he did this year. And Djokovic's first step towards the ball appears to be slightly more explosive than Murray's so that he's better set to hit the ball. Also, Federer charges to the net quicker this year than he did in 2012, perhaps revealing too much too early about his intentions.

Look at the trajectory of the FH. It is straight up to Novak. It is diagonal from Fed to Murray, making him stretch.

I am not sure if that comes into play. Fed would have had the same intensity both times. It was just 1 break there as well and it was a 40-30 point.
Fed was leading 2-1 in sets. Further more Djokovic already did that to him, Murray didn't. And when you play more than 4 hours and you get that in 16th game of 5th set, you can not be super steady and effective.

The intensity on championship point can't be much lesser.
