It will be interesting. Last year Djokovic was strong but the draw was kinder than the one that was projected. Federer, Cilic and Nadal all went out a round before the potential meeting. But I believe he will be up for it again.

Hopefully he gets some matches under his belt in Cincy. Doesn't have to win it, just to shake off the rust. It's been a while since Wimbledon, and a whole lot longer since last hard court tournaments, where he didn't do well.

I don't think he was too bothered about IW and Miami to be honest. You could see his mind was thinking about RG at that time.

The guy is at his mentally strongest right now, that win against Nadal at Wimbledon 2018 and then the one against Federer at Wimbledon 2019, he has got to be feeling the wind in his back heading into the big one in NYC. He knows fully well that history beckons should he win the Open, he will almost certainly pass Nadal then and will then lock his sights on the biggest prize, Federer.

Yes that last win has to have him feeling really strong right now. I think Cincy will be interesting though. I expect Federer to play really well. That will be a tough one for him to defend.

Looking back, he was playing us. He clearly didn't give his best at either tournament like he just played around. Wasn't really training because he looked nothing like those pics above. Now he looks like iron man and ready to conquer everytbing. Maybe he was just really saving himself for the Slams.

Cincy is the one I will be most curious about. Does he go all out to defend, or does he go in with mindset of getting in a couple of good quality matches, but not to push too hard either, saving it for USO. I know he will be fully ready for USO, Cincy is the question mark, because honestly he doesn't need it now.

He was having more fun and enjoying the doubles with Fognini there. He looked disinterested, I didn't see his game face return until Madrid, when you could that look in his eyes, the same one he had against Nadal in AO. Now, he will keep it through this key period at least.

I think he will really go for Cincy. The prospect of the double golden Masters is just too enticing for him to turn down. It be tough though.

He is looking so much better now than even at the last US Open. Remember that one moment when he took his shirt off and relaxing during the break? :oops:Was never concerned much by it especially then as he started to ascend again anyway, but I am glad he got himself in better shape.

I don't doubt it, he used to go all out at those events too because he could afford it and probably didn't look at Slams as the only important tournaments as he wasn't close in the race. Just saying it's been a while since his last quality hard court match, which was in the AO final. I am looking forward to that wait ending soon.

I saw the game face in MC but it took him a tournament to snap back into it. At least that's what I looked like from my end. That's why I thought, he will be hell in Madrid and Rome.

I will agree with you to a certain extent. He will go for it, but I don't think he will go all out for it. I don't think he will do anything to hurt his chances at the USO, and I am talking about any physical exertion that requires more than what he should put out there so close to the open. Last year was a bit different, he was fresh, had hardly played, his body was ready, this year, he has already had several tough battles, the crazy run in Rome, the epic with Thiem in RG, the epic with Federer at W, situation is a little different this time round IMO. If he can win it without reaching top gear, he will, but I think he wants to save his best for NYC.

He is looking at longevity now, and it is about winning as many slams as possible, and honestly, I don't even think he is looking at 21 as the ultimate goal. I think he wants to set it as high as he possibly can, while he still can. That is the real objective now. He has done fantastic outside of the slams, and his legacy there is now locked in platinum after getting that Cincy title last year, now, while all these titles still mean a lot, he knows what he really needs at this stage in career.

Agree. You knew he was thinking four in a row at that point. But that is gone for now. If he gets USO in a few weeks, he will be in a super position to again go for four in a row IMO, especially when AO being the next one.

I think Novak is physically and mentally in a better state than he was last year at this time. He was really skinny last fall. And he was mentally exhausted going through all those ups and downs earlier in the year.
Right now, he is just enjoying life and rejuvenating himself. On hardcourt, BO5, I mean who can beat this guy?

I honestly think that if Jelena asks Novak to win 25 GS for her and their kids, he will do it. My only concern is they may call it a career to pursue, you know, higher order of meaning/pleasure of life - like Novak walking their kids to and from school. I won't be surprised if Novak stops with a combined career of Hewitt, Safin, and Roddick still left in him.

True. Yea he has had a lot of long matches during the clay season and of course that Wimbledon final. I would agree with that in that he won't do anything to mess up his chances of another USO so he will go for it in Cincy but not overdo it. This is kind of where crashing out in IW and Miami may benefit him a bit compared to 2015 and 2016 though when he had already played much more tennis.

The draw for Novak (and Fed) is ridiculous. I just had to laugh. If he could come through that to at least the SF, at least he’s be battle-hardened.

Well, that draw looks chaotic. Has to play against two big servers on his return since Wimbledon, lets see how much Novak has rested and prepared himself for hard courts. I'm optimistic. :)

"Wimbledon had a movie script, I will always be proud of what I have done"

The best player in the world Novak Djokovic claims that he will arrive fully ready to the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season, where he defends the title.

Novak is in Cincinnati, where he is also defending the title, and in his statement for Sport Klub he talked about the upcoming tournaments, as well as the Wimbledon final and the eternal race with Federer and Nadal.

Djokovic says it wasn't easy for him to make a decision to skip the Rogers Cup in Canada.

"I played a lot of tennis even though I wasn't at the tournament in Canada. It was a difficult decision for me considering I love playing in Canada, I had a lot of success there and it's a big tournament we are talking about. However it was a team decision for us to skip that tournament in order to spend one more week on training and preparations for Cincinnati and US Open, I hope to be fresh and fully ready there because that's the goal in this part of the season", says Djokovic for SK.

On the legendary Wimbledon final where he defeated Roger Federer in five sets after nearly five hours, Novak said that it was one of the matches he will remember for the rest of his life.

"It was a movie script, one of the most exciting matches I have played in my life. Probably the only match that can be compared with is the one in Australia against Nadal in 2012 which lasted nearly six hours. Mentally, probably the most demanding match because of the whole atmosphere and everything that was happening, because of Federer who played the Wimbledon final very well"

"Now, I am not thinking much about that match, because my thoughts are on the present moments and what is coming. Tennis season is the way it is that you don't even have much time to look back at everything you experienced. That one additional week without tournaments allowed me to spend more quality time with family and to train, to look back at everything that happened in London. I am very proud and filled, it's something that I will carry with myself, but it's time to keep going",
says Novak.

The world number one is currently sitting on 16 Grand Slam trophies, he has two less than Nadal and four less than Federer.

Every next Grand Slam can be of big significance in the final tallies, so the Big 3 race for the final place in the history of sport is something that really attracts the attention of tennis fans.

"For Nadal, Federer and me it's already a race. Especially in this phase of our careers, when we are, according to some tennis standards in older years, especially Roger, but we still occupy the top three spots in the world. As far as I am concerned, I always valued Grand Slams as the most important tournaments, especially in these last few years because I am aware that they are what counts the most, besides, of course, the historic number one which I am approaching as well. That's why I definitely have to give my maximum at other tournaments", added Novak.

That's why Cincinnati, which he failed to win before last season, will be very important for him.

"I don't know to play any differently. Any tournament, any match, I try to give my best, although you always try to time your form to be the best at Grand Slams, which is the highest goal", concluded Djokovic.

Rewatched the wimbledon final again. Greater match than i first thought! Fed came out with the best game plan against djokovic that he has in years. The power shots they both were hitting was unreal. Feds bh is better now than ever. He was hitting that with a nice compact motion. Djokovic just went into lock down. What match. Mad full props to the AO Goat! I could see 6 wimbledons before he is done maybe 7! A nadal vs djokovic us open would be nice. We need rrvenge for 2013!

Fed's backhand was the best I have ever seen it in that tournament. He has never been able to go backhand to backhand with Djokovic before but he did it that day.

I was trying to figure out what was going on differently and rewatching the match i really was able to see the nuances and details with much more clarity. Watching it live is far more emotional than technical!

Novak played doubles yesterday with Tipsarevic. They lost to No.2 seeds Kubot/Melo.

This is a little bit worrisome. Novak didn't win a tournament when he applied for doubles in ages. Does this mean he just needed some time on court or that he doesn't have intention of going all out in Cinci?

I think its fine. He probably won't push too hard in Cincinnati and will try to peak for USO.

He said multiple times that most important thing are Slams in this phase of his career and that he won't go all out at Masters and other tournaments like before.

Watching it live was torture. Lol.
Lol i basically became numb after the 2nd set. Who knew who would win! Felt bad for fed after he lost the 1st set figured he would get wiped out in straights. Then 6-1! Then 7-6! Several times they both should have been done but turned it around. Unreal fortitude to win with that crowd. Nole got loose instead of tight at the end. Unreal balls of mechagodzilla space titanium!

Federer had the whole crowd on his side so I never felt bad for him until the end where you know that was one that was going to sting. Djokovic just wasn't playing as well as he should have in a Slam final and I never felt he was in control until he broke for 4-2 in the 5th and then just allowed Federer back into the match. It was very topsy turvy to say the least. But yea great mental toughness and boldness from Djokovic to hold his nerve through that match.

Lol i guess i still have a soft spot for fed. Even with his fanatic following lol. But true fed was mostly dictating play. But rewatching it fed cannot beat djokovic with a pure offensive game. Djokovic gets things back deep and that forces fed to have to reastablish the points. He had the right tactic this match. Djokovic did not give up. Underrated match!

Well you were a Federer fan before so that's probably why. Yea Federer played a tactically brilliant match really. He got Djokovic on a not so great day and it was the perfect makings of a big upset, but Djokovic just refused to lose. It reminded me of that Venus/Davenport final in 2005 when Davenport was just handling Venus and she was off, especially compared to her demolitions of Pierce and Sharapova, and Davenport had a championship point as well but Venus refused to lose and hung tight until the end, where there was an opening and took it. It was like both played their best when their backs were against the wall but were average at other times. Very similar matches and outcomes.

That 2005 Wimby final between Venus and Lindsay is one for the ages. Loved that match. I thought it was mostly high quality and both players were hitting HARD (and accurately). Great drama too.

Ironically I think it was longest Wimbleon ladies final like Djokovic/Federer match was on the men's side. Yea it was a very dramatic match and I thought Venus played great when she was down and Davenport was great all the way throughout. (Where did the like button go?)

True true was a fed fan up until IW 2007!
Interesting forgot about that match. Very very similar those two matches. Davenport was basically done after that match.
The wimbledon match might be better for djoker mentally than if he won in straights!
Count him out at your own peril!

Played very bad today..... Isner could eliminate him soon.

I only saw it from 2-1 second set. Understandable that he's rusty but he served pretty well after that bad first game it seems. Looks slow to react and his timing off the ground is somewhat off. He has to adjust to the quick conditions being that the Wimbledon conditions were quite slow. Good win today against a big server to get ready for Isner.

Busta should be easy work.... I would have preferred Isner though...... Busta won't prepare him well enough for Kyrgios..... I expect Nole v KryPunk to go 3 sets?
