Who here thinks Canada could win the DC?

Canada is playing spectacular tennis. They are putting great sets and matches on the board, and I really believe at this point they have a shot. Mind you, they haven't played the big guns yet. But, Denis' win over Berrettini was really wonderful. Pospisil is one set up on Opelka.
The jinx is in. Don't see how they do it without FAA.

Great to see Pospisil regain some of his old form. They don't have a Nadal or Djokovic but there is real depth to this squad. And they don't need Raonic!

It's a stretch. They're relying on Pospisil - and if he could keep up his current level for a week at a time, he wouldn't be ranked where he is. Also, Pops and Shapo have to play both matches each tie, so fatigue is going to matter because they don't have dedicated doubles specialists.

Win probably not but Felix is a wildcard now, he could be a factor in a big run. They've made the first step anyway.

A Commonwealth foe in the QFs. Kyrgios playing well in support of de Minaurity and Peers/Thompson quite capable.

It won’t be easy!

My understanding is that the Aussies are descended from a bunch of purse snatchers and pick-pockets. The more virtuous Canadians won't take any guff off those sort of people. Canada 3-0.

I'm hoping Canada vs Aus comes down to the doubles rubber. Shaps and Pospisil are both playing well, but De Minaur and Kyrgios could be tricky so I really can't call it yet. Any ideas who will play who?

I doubt that will happen. Australia should be through to the semis after the singles.
Both Pospisil and Shapovalov are playing well thought, De Minaur and Kyrgios aren't unbeatable, I really can't predict this tie.

We sure are and don't forget we cheat at line calling so just be grateful we don't get to call our own lines!! My best overseas holidays are when my wife and I share tour groups with Canadians - very similar sense of humour as Aussies and very easy to get along with. Go the Commonwealth!!!

Thanks for the nice reply, and my best vacation was to Australia scuba diving where I felt very at home with our cousins.

No fair dinkum attitude surviving the millennium? Sad to hear.

As a late teen I was privileged to bend my elbow in Earl’s Court London public houses with many an Aussie drinking mate. The area was (may still be?) affectionately referred to as Kangaroo Court due to the large population of young Aussies in the area. The one uniting factor for this American and his Aussie mates was pure hatred of pi$$ warm draft brewskis served in the pubs. There’s nothing like an ice cold one and they weren’t readily available at every corner of a pub crawl through The Court.

Can God-mode Popsicle show up again vs Mother Russia? He did beat Khachanov at USO!
I really do think Khachanov is a liability in the singles. Rublev is in some good form and will be tough to beat. I'm hoping Canada do make the final though.

Shapo is 2-1 against Rublev, winning the last two matches both this year.
Shapo has never played Khachanov.

Pospisil is 1-0 against both Khachanov and Rublev.

I expect Dancevic will pit Khachanov against Pospisil who is goating at the moment. Shapovalov v. Rublev could go either way, but I expect Denis won't lose another singles.

Who or how are the matchups determined? If it’s a strict by-the-rankings determination (#1’s KK vs Shapo) then it’s Rubylev. If it’s a coin flip or the higher seeded team gets to choose, and Canada wins, then Dancevic should let Popsicle play Karen.
Where is Aliassime? I havent seen him since USO

Had ankle injury at beginning of the week, is available for action now, but why yank Pospisil when he's been on fire?

Actually he had his ankle injury just before Paris M1000 and had to pull out. It's all about the recovery time.
And, to your point, it would be tough to pull Pospisil, when he's won every single match he's played. What coach wants to make that call? To put in a guy coming back from injury for a guy who's got the "mo"?

Completely off topic, but....I just found out last night that my friend's father-in-law 'discovered' Phil Esposito. He was the Blackhawk's scout for Ontario.

[Sorry for the interruption....carry on.]
That is not an interruption at all, it is the continuance of relaying trivia information related to the great Canada versus Russia sports rivalry (since 1972), it is highly valued. To further connect the rivalry I am certain that Phil Esposito is getting up at 4:30 AM (EST) tomorrow (in Florida) to watch the Canada vs Russia Davis Cup match.

Doubles is more important than ever in the best of 3 matches format. Nadal is good at both singles and doubles and that's a huge advantage to Spain. I think Spain is the favorite. However, Russia may be able to beat them if Rublev somehow beats Nadal, which is unlikely. Canada doesn't have strong no.2 singles player. Pospisil has regressed a lot, I think, he looked to be a solid top 20 kind of player when he was younger, but hasn't progressed much since. However, anything can happen in sports, so let's see.

the reason that chant was taken up in Moscow in 72:

"Officials barred the Canadians' horns from the stands at the Luzhniki Ice Palace, so the Canadians instead took up the unforgettable chant: "Da, da, Canada! Nyet, nyet, Soviet!"

One of the Moscow newspapers described the Canadians in a headline as "colourful barbarians.""

I was so into that Summit Series (as was the rest of Canada) that when the upstart WHA tried to imitate the series in 1974 I had to, just HAD to, go to Moscow to be a part of the crazy. What an interesting trip that was!!!! And I screamed myself hoarse yelling that "Da, da, Canada! Nyet, nyet, Soviet!". What great memories. :giggle:

Nice storey.

I was in grade 5 when the 7th game was played in September '72 and it was broadcast from Moscow. I was in Mrs. Pugh's class, home room, and the game was on in the afternoon and everyone was talking about it. The principal, Mr. Buck, came on over the PA system and said "regarding the game today we are going to allow TV's in the classroom so everyone can watch it". He hardly got through the sentence when the cheers came up and I could hear the cheers from other classrooms up and down the hallway. "If I don't let you watch it here in school", Mr Buck continued, "then no one will be here this afternoon" and then he allowed himself a little laugh.

When Henderson scored we actually danced on our school desks. I have never reached that height of elation again, not with my clothes on anyway.

You misinterpreted what I wrote. When I said he had an ankle injury at the beginning of the week, that isn't supposed to mean he got the injury at the beginning of the week.
