Well...
If you dig into the history of Nike, co-founder Bill Bowerman was obsessed with eliminating waste and making high performing products specifically for elite athletes. He had no patience for making shoes that were pretty or fancy looking at the expense of performance. That's why you sometimes see that label on Nike products that says "Engineered to the Exact Specifications of Championship Athletes." It goes back to Bowerman's ideals.
@the_faceless_player is correct with apparel in that sometimes the designers are chasing fashion trends and streetwear styles over strict performance, and that seems to be the case with the Nike Court area for the past couple years. Although, to be fair, I don't see anything in these new designs that would be detrimental to performance from a physical standpoint. The purple cow suit and those shorts wouldn't be my choice, but I doubt I'm the demographic they are being designed for anyway. And I supposed Nike should be applauded for trying something different... very different...
