They havent played for a long time largely because Djokovic has not done well in america by his high standards in recent years. He has had a number of early exits.

At the AO maybe, but at the USO Nadal is the current champion and defeated Thiem in their last USO match. Thiem hasn't got past the QF of the USO in his whole career, so it depends on which kind of hard court you refer. At the AO you can go with Thiem, but at the USO you have to go with Nadal until proven otherwise.
Sorry, I was unfair with Thiem as well. You were indeed partially right! It really depends on which kind of hard court. Specifically at the AO, I think Thiem is better right now, just like specifically at the USO Nadal is still better than Thiem until proven otherwise.
Thiem has a problem in Big Finals. Won only Indian Wells and nothing on clay so far. Curious.
