The rankings have it:
Medvedev
Nadal
Thiem
Federer
Tistispas
Zverev

The big titles have it:
Nadal: 2 (USO & Canada)
Medvedev: 2 (Shangai & Cinci)
Tsitsipas: 1 (WTF)
Thiem: 1 (Indian Wells)
Federer: 1 (Miami)

I dunno, the difference in some hard courts are as big as the difference between hardcourt and some other surfaces.

I can't disagree with that but the premise of the thread is who is the second best hard court player right now, not who is the better indoor fast hard court player or who is the better outdoor slow hard court player.

  1. Djokovic
  2. Nadal
  3. Medvedev
  4. Thiem / Fed
Counted out Tsitsipas because he's going the Zverev route at the slams

For too harcourt, here’s who I would prefer to rack him the most hard court during the next 12 months.

1. Djoker- look at the Grand Canyon
2. Nadal- won USO. Easy #2
3 Thiem- watch out for him at the USO
4. Medvedev-Still very dangerous
5 Stan— he’s kind of dangerous.
6. Zverev- did he turn a corner? Or was his insane serving a complete fluke?
7. Tsitsipas-
8. Federer.-

Fed’s age is really catching up to him quickly. Millman and Sandgren tested him way too much. The Dimitrov match was a nightmare.

errr pretty obvious, Thiem convincingly beats Nadal and then Zvevs for his 3rd slam final in his 5th slam semi and Medvedev was nowhere, and he gave Djoks a hell of a lot more trouble than Feds or Nadal earlier in the month

Rafa is current Us open champ and Montreal masters champ. AO runner last year and quarter final this year. Rafa is above Thiem by quite a lot and only behind Djokovic.
Thiem is this year's runner up (little bit more relevant than last years' runner up and he didnt get mauled like Nadal did then and recently by Djoks), and also Indian Wells champion with a real draw and YE finalist

9th Sept 2013. if I was Nadal, id do a Lendl and stop playing on my favourite surface to just focus on sorting out this horrible damning statistic for him (and against Feds it's not much better: Jan 2014)

err yeah, and then 9 straight wins (in fact 18 successive sets) on HC since then plus a Wimbledon semi. Djoks has had Nadal's number off clay since 11, and even on clay in 11, 15 and 16

Well then 'Hardcourt' is really meaningless since they differ so much. It's like asking who's the best natural surface player? What for? Clay and grass were always night and day and still are quite different relatively speaking.

Good question. It's Novak and then some distance. Based on results, it's probably Medvedev but based on recent form I'm inclined to say Thiem.
Thiem just made the final of a HC slam, Med lost in the fourth round to a 34 year old guy who hasn't done much for years.

The answer is obvious.

Yes, because both Thiem and Medvedev have won the last US Open.

Nadal won the last US Open, Thiem hasn't won a HC Slam in his whole career.

Yes, because both Thiem and Medvedev have won the last US Open. Completely unobjective response from you.
I'm gonna be honest with you; I literally forgot about Nadal when writing that response, partially due to prior bias since I didn't consider him to be a "hard court type". But then I realized he has the US Open title. You're probably correct on the bolded.

If the two played a match today, I would choose Thiem.
At the AO maybe, but at the USO Nadal is the current champion and defeated Thiem in their last USO match. Thiem hasn't got past the QF of the USO in his whole career, so it depends on which kind of hard court you refer. At the AO you can go with Thiem, but at the USO you have to go with Nadal until proven otherwise.

Sorry, I was unfair with Thiem as well. You were indeed partially right! It really depends on which kind of hard court. Specifically at the AO, I think Thiem is better right now, just like specifically at the USO Nadal is still better than Thiem until proven otherwise.

Nadal is rightfully the second best in the world just from the sheer fact he is holding the USO title, and even has a masters title in Montreal. Only Djokovic is overall better than him right now on HC.

I would still choose Thiem who is only getting better with time.

I think Thiem is clearly #3. Made the finals of the last 2 big events, although unfortunately lost both. Has beaten everyone, just can't win the big one. If he had won either of his big finals I would consider having him at #1 as he has become really consistent on hard courts lately.
Thiem has a problem in Big Finals. Won only Indian Wells and nothing on clay so far. Curious.

How far back in time are you going with your analysis of Thiem as second best on HC? WTF? AO?

Very recent history only. Don't get me wrong, i already rated him very highly on HC last year because I've seen him play a lot at USO. But my opinion of him has gone up further since watching him practice a lot at this year's AO and seeing his matches.

2020 Thiem is an upgrade on 2019, which is a scary thought.

Could make the clay season very interesting if that is the case.

Thiem is an amazing player. Ever since he brought Massu to his team, he has been in process of constant improvement.
