Hope you get back to 100% soon.

Just had my first hamstring injury in a long time. Recovering now.

How did you injure your hamstring? Did you feel a sharp pain initially? How long does it take to recover?

Come on man come to Destin. Its the best chance I have to survive the BounceHitBounceHit beatdown. Actually my vids would look a ton better if NYTA and Maximagq and Mango had to play with my legs and I got theirs. Craig is the real deal dude!!

Hey guys got a new sitch and came to ask the grey ghost panel

Got diagnosed with a classic sports hernia on the right hand side I'm a righty.

It's a small one less than a centimetre. Half an inch for you guys. and the ultrasound says it just contains fat so no problem with intestines bulging out.

The plan is I will have the op in August so I'm stuck playing with it until then.

Since it's the most common type I'm assuming a few of you have had it.

I've bought one of those bloody truss things i.e. giant Bridget Jones panties to give it some support playing. No dignity in getting old.

It's a bit sore but the only drama so far is it seems to make my lower back tighter.

Does anyone have any good links on what you can do safely as warm up and stretching.

And yeah I accept that nobody is a doctor all risk on me.

Thanks

Had a great morning of Men's Doubles. 4 guys we all take turns playing one set with each other. Today we got 4 sets in so I played the extra set with my first partner. We are all pretty evenly matched so it's a good time.
Well today I was King of the Court winning all 4 of my sets: 6-1, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2. It's pretty rare to have everything that one-sided. A few things I noticed about my game that helped:

1) Get your first serve in! In 4 sets I hit 6 second serves, one DF. Held all my service games with only one deuce game.
2) Get your returns back! In 4 sets I missed 8 returns.
3) Weight loss. I've taken 15 lbs off since Christmas Holidays and it's made a big difference in net play. Poaching was so much easier with a few less lbs.
4) Volley and OVH well. Again i only failed on 2 volley or OVH opportunities in the 4 sets. Focus was the key.
5) 18x20 Frame. With my recent bout of golfer's elbow I've been playing more open pattern frames as they play a little softer. Today I pulled out the Phantom Pro 100 18x20. Just a great doubles frame for a control game. Serves and returns were more accurate, low slices were nasty. Volleys were pin point. Less airmailed balls.
6) My new FH is finally starting to groove in so fewer unforced errors.

Heading to Palm Desert next week so I'm glad my game is rounding into form. Wondering if I should bring my 18x20 with me rather than the 16x19?

Been hitting 3 times a week, serving occasionally when I play dubs but trying to let my wrist mend and avoiding serving. Play my first league match tomorrow (singles). Hitting well, moving well but competition rusty. We shall see.

@ChaelAZ good on you for hitting with your recovering friend. I had a couple guys who would hit with me when I could hardly move and I was so appreciative of their patience.

Well, as is I cannot make side step onto my left, it is really hard to space right. The pain is too much yet the arthritis/arthrosis medicine. And sprinting off to the net is totally out of repertoire, cause the need to stop too. Looks really bad. And will probably end my senior tennis carrier before any reasonable success.

Since the sideways move is so agonizing, it seems to be an end being a skater as well. Cycling maybe, but water running... What a brain drilling thrill that is between the oversized, over weighted gossiping grannies.

Identity crises hitting big. A sports person turning into a crippled crumpy old drunk hag. Cheers, anyway!

For me, I've said before I hit with anyone and any level. I can find something to work on. With my buddy, he cannot run much and has to keep his heart rate down, so my goal is to give him hittable balls close to him. So good consistency and placement practice really. And very challenging as after we get warmed up I tell him to hit where ever he wants, so I get a decent cardio workout.

Well challenge this weak. Playing a guy I used to beat but who has beaten me the last two times so it's on.

Trouble is he is a net player and drop shotter and there is no way I'm going to be making desperate sprints with a hernia no matter how mild.

So first strike tennis and move forward two or three steps into court waiting for the weak reply. Of course if he hits a strong deep reply I am stuffed but this guy arm balls so hopefully that won't happen too often

I don't think I'd play real singles if I was recovering from a sports hernia. Is this a money match or league playoffs? If not I'd ask him to play one on one doubles and limit the lateral movement.

So Saturday I made the brilliant decision to do a bunch of yardwork, lots of shoveling, raking, pruning, cleaning out the (large) henhouse, pulling a bunch of spring weeds. Listened to a great podcast on the shipwreck of the Batavia and ensuing madness (highly recommended!). All good till the middle of the night when my back started hurting.

Got up Sunday to get ready for my league match. Back hurts but not *too* much. Feel pretty good in warmups but then after a game or two I feel a tweak and suddenly my ability to get low and make sudden movements is a bit compromised. Still can play though and lose a close match (5-7, 6-7 [8]). Can't really blame the back as he played better on crucial points. Would have been bummed if my match was the decider but it wasn't (we got whooped).

I figured it would be pretty much better after a day's rest but here it is Weds and it hurts even more - maybe from doing office work all week. Sucks if it doesn't get better soon, 2 of our 3 best singles guys are out hurt already and we might go from first (last season) to worst lol.

My 55th birthday is next week and I'm feeling it. Great, now I have to strategically schedule chores! This getting old stuff sucks!

hey guys, as I get older, I am getting little slower on the Return of serve on returning big serves. I am finding that I am getting late on the ball more often. is this normal ??

On the other DT Movie it seems, that your opponent isn’t doing any better on the return, yet you may have a benefit double foot faulting on the deuce court.

Yes, the court is very fast and we both serve in 80-100mph range, so return rate is naturally low. The biggest problem is not the return but surviving the next couple of shots after the return. I was going for deep and aggressive returns because conservative returns are punished.

We play practice sets to 10 when one of us serve all the points to see what is the win-loss ratio in the serve and return.
It is typically 10-3 in favor of the server for both of us. If I serve only to my partners forehand the score is like 10-7. And if I serve to his forehand and play the next shot to his forehand the score is almost even and I often loose

You don't look as ready as I think I remember from other videos you posted. Where are you again that you are playing indoor?

And yeah, those courts look fast so I would be late and pulling serve returns out my azz, methinks.

I felt as could not focus on the ball when it was closing in. Another age related thing. I am tracking the ball and suddenly it is lost and I have to refocus.
May be it was not enough light.
There are many plastic carpet courts like this one in Moscow. For some reason they were popular some time ago and only past couple of years clubs started to resurface making hard courts.

This is exactly an issue I have. So I play well enough in the day time, but that evening dusk or when the lights are first on, I struggle a lot. Also any courts with crappy lights just kill me anymore. But even with light like in the day, with my vision issues I lose depth perception at times and that is annoying.

But don't worry, I hear it only gets...worse! :p

Why are you hugging the baseline on a fast court against a good serve? More people should take a note from Nadal and move back if they are rushed against a big server, especially if the server doesn't like coming in. You will get a higher % of serves back.

I NEVER* tell my partners what to do in dubs BUT a couple weeks ago my partner (who was deuce side) was shanking/missing EVERY return against a big server (was trying to return at/inside BL). This put ALL the pressure on me (playing ad). Sorry but if I get us to deuce a couple times with NO help from you because you are using moronic strategy (or more like zero thought/strategy) I'm going to say something. So I told him to back up 5 feet.

Next serve: swing and a miss!

Apparently moving back messed up his timing. He gave me a look like "SEE!!!"

Short answer - I have tried it ( keep trying ) and it does not work. Not on this court. I do it on slow courts though.

My partner serve mostly slices.
If I step back I barely touch the ball on the return. It has too much lateral movement.

I wonder what Nadal would be doing on a court like this. On a slow hard or clay ball loses about 30% of speed on the bounce. On plastic surface I think it is not more then 10%. So with our 100mph serves I get at contact what Nadal gets from 120mph serve. And I am not Nadal.

2 people at my work tested positive for corona (different part of building/different elevator bank so not too worried). Got news last night the building is shut down till Thurs for cleaning/disinfecting.

Then just heard on the news the bay area counties are to 'shelter in place' (stay home) till April 7. This includes my home office.

I can't even visit my mom at her assisted living place (I'm actually glad since they are the most vulnerable). I'm very worried about her (and all of our elderly). I'm thankful my job is not in jeopardy as so many are. Really puts things in perspective.

Crazy times. Stay healthy fellow seniors!

Got a notice yesterday that all of our offices are closed. So everyone that can, is working from home. My equipment did work which is nice (I hadn't tested my home setup). Things are not too crazy here as we have 13 cases, none severe. All of the cases were due to travel. There was one case with travel to Central America. All of the others were to Europe. About 400 people are being monitored.

Since tennis is somewhat not possible at the moment, weather and restrictions on loitering, my brother got an idea and ordered a guitar amp kit to my address.

Soldering and measuring the device after having it assembled gives huge satisfaction and make you feel enlightened in these sad times of covid-19.

The kit was an updated vintage Fender 5F1 Tweed amp. Bro is producing the cabinet and put all together with a vintage Warehouse guitar 8”-speaker. Looking forward to hear how it’ll sound.

Had been like over ten years since I last fiddled with electronics, but it was as rewarding as back in the day, when building speakers and amps before.

The best in such is, that while you put an electronic device together, you see yourself handcrafting something in front of your very own eyes, then you measure, what you manufactured and finally get the biggest reward, hear the sound quality and precise replay of the idea of a composer.

April showers bring May flowers. I'm thinking of driving to my office and running under the parking deck. Right now, doing body weight and barbell in the basement. I had to clear off some space for that. It would be great if it were sunny and 70 but we're still getting snow on and off.

I've been doing running training at a local mall that has been closed down. It's a seven story high parking garage and floors three and up are closed off to cars. I run from the bottom all the way to the top and on the way back down, walk the downhill portions and sprint the flats. It's a bit less than three minutes to run the whole way up at about a 9 minute mile pace with about 50 feet elevation gain, which is not bad for a 58 year old that weighs 200 pounds. I've also been doing single legged step-ups onto a 2+ foot high stepladder. Probably doing 30-50 pushups a day, core and shoulder/arm work with some barbells that we have. Our weather has been pretty wet but this coming week will dry out and get to near 60 degrees F. Time for some hiking.

I'm pretty sure there is going to be another wave of infections once social distancing and stay-at-home mandates are eased. During that time, I'm going to invest in a more complete weight set than the bits and pieces that I already have. Right now, any kind of home workout equipment is going for a premium.

That’s a nice workout. stairs would be nice to do as well.

I hope that we don’t get a second wave. China appears to have one but nobody knows how big it is.

I am looking at a Kaiser m3i and I think that they’re less right now than usual. I would consider a treadmill but I don’t have the space and wouldn’t like the noise. The Kaiser is supposed to be very quiet.

I have a barbell set but I love the set at the office as we have eight 45s which makes things faster. I will have to make do with what I have.

I have a stationary bike at my disposal but I got so burned out about 30 years ago when I was a competitive cyclist. Living in the Paciffic Northwest, I used to do a couple of hours at a time on a magnetic resistance unit hooked up to my bike. It was like an exercise in sensory deprivation and I would be an incoherent, slobbering mess making sub-human noises by the time I got off the bike.

My daughter purchased a set of Costco barbells a while ago and that has been her sanctuary and reprieve. If I ever see that set again, I'm going to buy it wothout hesitation.
