I would cancel the French. It’s not worth the risk and it’s a garbage slam anyways. Let’s play Wimbledon and then call it a year.

Are you crazy ? we need French open, there we see that insane topspin from RAFA. we can't miss that. NO cancellation of ANy ATP events. WTA players can just come on swisuits and play cheerleader. NO spectators. only TV coverage for ATP events. This is the Plan

If the calendar year ends up needing to be crammed into say June or July onward, do you think they'll play all the slams in a condensed format? Say, RG in June, Wimbledon in July, US in September?

I am very angry. lets all write ATP and WTA to put the Miami open back on. Playing in empty stadium is just as good. and it will still make ton of money with TV coverage. Players can't afford this.. some of these lower ranked guys will have to go on Food Stamps.

Your argument is so laughable. These lower guys can still make money by coaching at local clubs or private lessons at public tennis courts at $100USD/hour. They do not pay taxes and get to use public tennis courts for free).

What's the cost of playing the tournament and broadcasting with no crowd, vs not playing it at all? Surely there will be a high demand with self-isolations and working from home to watch the tennis, no? I'm sure if it were doable and they could adapt fast enough, they would, but I'd genuinely like to know.

y June.
now that IW’s been cancelled is there an actual chance of RG being cancelled?

I would say a very good chance because Paris can still have cool temps in May and early June and France may still be very cautious at that time. Same with Italian Open - I doubt they play it. Tennis may resume on the grass when temps are better.

The increase in ultraviolet radiation, especially starting with the month of May, should prove to be even more deadlier for the virus than the actual rise in temperatures.Just look at how countries like India, Nepal or tropical countries in general are (way) less affected, the exception being Singapore due to continuous "import" of diseased persons and incredible overcrowding typical of the region.Based on the fact that no living organism can withstand continuous high doses of UV and that this virus shares 90% of the 2003 SARS characteristics, I expect it to gradually decline starting with May, but problems could move to the Southern Hemisphere.
Another key factor should be humidity; the higher the humidity, the smaller chances for the virus to go airborne.

Unfortunately, covid-19 will cause so much carnage for the next six weeks. Italy's health system is on the brink of collapse. Lot of prays for Italian people.

Hopefully the people in Argentina, Chile and Brazil have time to prepare for this because it is the end of summer over there

Modern science should be able to fully contain this virus by June-July, but this will have serious impacts on the economy as well, especially in Europe. For example, I can't imagine how long it will take for turism to bounce back in countries like Italy and Spain after all will be said and done.
The East Asian countries like South Korea proved to be smarter and better organised, yet again.

The virus will shut down evething for the entire year. In germany it is expected to infect 55 million people and peak around august. And this is only the first wave

You are too pessimistic. We are not in 1347 when The Black Death had apocaliptic effects.

In their response to the virus sure. But it's difficult to consider them smarter and better organised when it originated from over there, yet again...
Well China is always the exception, "the black sheep" when it comes to these kind of things. They should stop eating everything that moves, in the first place, but old habits die hard.I don't want to sound harsh, but it is how it is.

I think we will never know for sure, but many share your opinion on the internet and not only.As always, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

What do you mean it 'originated from over there yet again'?

2009 H1N1 swine flu originated from the United States and killed 300,000 people. During that outbreak, I don't recall xenophobic anti-America attacks across the globe, do you?

Please stop that nonsense. Next thing you know, Western countries attempted to re-write history by blaming the Spanish flu of 1918 on the Chinese too.

From what position are you saying this? You are not a doctor, neither someone who knows anything about this virus other than what we all know.

The media outlets who defend the current US administration are already trying to shift the blame to someone else by calling it the "foreign coronavirus" or the "Chinese coronavirus"

Let's remember where the SARS outbreak from 2002 started.I am not saying that China is guilty for everything and the West is better or something like it , not at all, but definitely they do something wrong because this is the 2nd time.I don't defend the West, but China neither as I have nothing to gain.I am from a country that was part of the communist block for decades.

Spanish flu is thought to have originated in Kansas. Killed circa 50 million.

Just saying

You are making excuses for Rafa's lack of achievements at the ATP world tour finals.
We know it you know it.

He's never dominated the tour the way Fed and Novak have. Even in 2010 his best year on tour, he lost to players like Baghdatis Lopez Garcia Lopez....

Fed 36 consecutive GS QF.
Novak 28 consecutiveGS QF

Consistency is a sign of domination. Nadal is far behind in that area.

Nadal has never reached all GS finals in the same year and has never defended a GS title outside of the FO.

That was over 100 years ago. It's quite irrelevant for the discussion about what changes need to be made to minimize the risk of these outbreaks from occurring today. And if anyone doubts that China has a problem then simply go to the WHO web page and lookup disease outbreak news by country.

I mean, he / she mentions Brazil, Argentina and Chile forgetting the other countries in the region such as Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.
I still think that Man's worst enemy is ignorance.

No. I think if a Slam misses its normal date, it won't be played. I guess maybe minor shifts could happen - like a week later, but not big shifts.

It will definitely be cancelled. I think the whole year might be. Tennis or any sport is not important right now. Stay safe everyone.

Hope not. This Corona virus is supposed to die out during hot summer month,, according to Recent study published. means, no threat during summer. so why should we miss out on Federer winning another Wimbledon and US open...

Show me this study. It is ******** wishful thinking. Every virologist now says that weather has very little effect on this virus. When Merkel says 60-70 % of people in germany get infected, i guarantee you Corona will be here at least till the end of the year.
You ABSOLUTELY don't know what you are talking about and are spreading misinformation.

If the delay strategy of Boris Johnson works the peak in the UK would be in the summer. I fear both FO and Wimbledon will be canceled this year. :(

Looks probable but if it is on,Nadal will be near unbackable favourite because of the lack of warm up tournaments and he is vastly more experienced at RG than anyone else. Would be bakery city for Rafa...

Yes it is under threat. But coronavirus is similar to influenzas in that is spreads in the colder months and isn’t so prominent in the warmer months. The spread will die down once we get into May or so. its the only thing that stopped SARS and is the only thing that will stop Covid-19

Just started to read this thread, so I might be late. How do you know that Covid-19 is like the flu?

Funny that nobody mentioned Macau. They had 10 cases in the beginning and now they're reopening their schools cause they didn't have any new case in more than a month. That's government doing their job.
