New York, New Jersey visitors must quarantine. USO?

I just read that Federal States of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut announced all visitors will have to quarantine for 14 days if they wish to enter this area of the US.
How do you think this will impact the USO and USO series of tournaments announced earlier by ATP and ITF?

Any players training in FL would be affected by this restriction if the state’s numbers continue their current spike. Isner, who lives in Dallas, would also be impacted.

We must wait and see if the upward trends in Sunbelt states flatten early enough to avoid the quarantine. It’s not looking good though.

Here is an idea: why don't we hold all tennis tournaments in one isolated place in the world? After all, there won't be any spectators right? Maybe do it indoor somewhere in the Arctic or Antarctic?

I doubt the U.S. Open is going to happen. Outside of the public health issue of having fans attend in one of the most populous cities in the world, getting the players there and keeping them healthy for the duration of the tournament would a huge challenge/risk. What if multiple players test positive mid-tournament? Would the tournament have lucky losers, walkovers, or would it be that tournament that "no one won"?

Edit: I just read that the plan is to play it without fans. Even so, I doubt it'll happen.

It's looking horrible. 260 dead in FL in the last week, total. The last higher total was 272 on June 2nd. The worst week every was 336, on April 23rd. Deaths are the bottom line, and we don't know how much worse it will get because these numbers are from up to 3 weeks ago. There is a direct connection with reopening too soon and what is happening. Our leaders are idiots.

U kiding right?About ~10 million people dying every month in the world. We are having Corona virus for ~6 months (60mln people died) and only almost 500000 deaths by corona virus globally. These 500000 if not corona would die soon anyway because of their health problems.

I feel for you regarding your "leaders".

I think in the future, emergency health matters should be handled completely separately from politics/ governance. Health authority should be independent and no politician should be allowed to control it.

It’s funny these 3 states are doing this when these 3 states each have 10 times the deaths per capita as Florida.
Guess you don’t stay up on current events...the tri-state area curve has been severely flattened while Sunbelt states are now peaking. The three governors don’t want to undo their progress.

I find it funnier that Spring Break was still going on with no social distancing at FL beaches for a week after Gov. DeSantis made an identical quarantine on NYers three months ago. It took days for him to figure out an airport-only enforcement still let NY motorists enter the state and that Louisiana residents, then a second hotspot, would also need turning back at Pensacola on I-10.

Kentucky Derby is going to run on September 5th with fans in attendance. Just posted today.

Thats a solid 150-170 thousand people at one place.

**** is going to be opening back up. Its time.

Crowd size will be severely reduced from the normal 150K throng. No specific data was released but KY restaurants are just now allowed 50% occupancy. I doubt Churchill Downs will reach 1/3 their normal crowd. Add in the comfort factor of 1st Saturday in May >>> 1st Saturday in September in steamy Louisville.

You have to be prepared for multiple players to test positive before, during, and after the tournament.

If the intention is to hold the tournament to completion if and only if nobody tests positive, then you may as well cancel it now because that's probably not going to happen.

The number of new cases is spiking in Florida, but the deaths everyday are still lower than New York. Might it be that more and more people are being tested, but are in the 99% who will have no or mild symptoms? Until we see an appreciable rise in deaths per day, I won’t jump to conclusions. I know Florida at 155 deaths per million is very far away from the 1615 deaths per million in NY. In theory, 25% of the population has had Coronavirus and most don’t know it.
No. 46 deaths in FL yesterday. 20 in NY State. With the average lag between case count and fatalities, FL’s numbers will jump in July as every day in the last half of June has set records for case counts. NYS’s numbers will continue downward as long as people are more sensible in social behavior as they reopen. Hopefully, no 2-dozen positives Incidents like from the one bar in Jacksonville about two weeks ago.

Your stated 1615/million is skewed by NYS being the epicenter 6 weeks ago and more.

As to ease of being tested in FL...come down here for a test but set your alarm for 3am or so to get in line for about 5 hours or more to be tested. Whatever happened to ease of testing promised in the winter?

One person tested positive and they just cancelled a football match, but I don't think they'll shut down a tournament unless there are several day after day.

If you look at a map, CT, NY and New Jersey have flattened curves and worked hard by staying home to do so. New York was one of the worst states, but they are not any longer. We have had solid leadership. It is one of the best areas in the country for the amount of cases right now. I believe CT, where I live, has the fewest cases per 1000 people in the country. Florida is one of the worst states right now, as is CA, Texas, Arizona, etc. Take a look at the map. I for one am glad people have to quarantine to come here from those states. The government in Florida is an absolute mess. Check a map - it certainly benefits everyone to be on top of this.

I live in Florida. Mortality rate from this keeps dropping. 2.9% as of today's data. Rate was over 4% a month ago. Cases go up, mortality rate goes down. Will be interesting how this all susses out. My guess is that this pathogen ends up a sub-3% mortality rate when all is said and done. Only time will tell.

Yes, time will tell.

“If you’re going to do that with the death rate, you should be prepared to look at the death rate in a month or so,” said William Hanage, an epidemiologist at Harvard’s school of public health. “You might not find it so attractive.”

Part of the reason why the death rate seems to be "falling" is that more widespread testing is catching more cases that would have otherwise gone undetected.

Data from early in the pandemic overestimated how deadly the virus was, and then later analyses underestimated its lethality. Now, numerous studies — using a range of methods — estimate that in many countries some 5 to 10 people will die for every 1,000 people with COVID-19. “The studies I have any faith in are tending to converge around 0.5–1%,” says Russell.

Note that this is an estimation of the IFR (infection fatality rate) instead of CFR, which is limited by testing

So you’re trusting the data from the state government that fired their top data specialist on May 18 for refusing to fudge numbers that showed only two of FL’s 67 counties were meeting reopening portals? Google Rebekah Jones and review her privately posted dashboard on the real numbers. Then report back to us if you’re still optimistic about our trend.

I live in Orlando and depend on tourism for my livelihood. I appreciated the mini-bump we had two weeks ago. Last week went softer and this week so far is a total bust. What person in their right mind pays to enter a hotspot for this potentially lethal circumstance? Bye bye pleasure tourism! Our business tourism has been nil since early March and I’m not expecting that sector back until a vaccine is universally available, probably at least a year away.

It’s hunker down and hope for more help from Washington. We certainly won’t get it from Tallahassee and DeInsanity, the ultimate denier who won’t even make face masks mandatory.

Rebekah's site says 3,423 dead in FL
FL site says 3,327

Her number is higher, but not hugely so.

FL is similar to Sweden, for good or bad. Deaths are not coming down fast enough, but they are coming down. Data on how many people are in hospitals varies.

Keep watching deaths over the next month. If they go back up, we're in deep doo-doo. But I refuse to judge this virus by cases. The only important thing re cases is the % of positives in all new cases. Deaths remains the number one stat, always assuming of course that our numbers are accurate (huge problem).

Deaths on the FL site match Worldometer, but daily deaths on the FL site are updated daily, going back up to a month. The graphs on both are about the same, but FL shows an earlier peak because many deaths show on a day on the W site actually happen 2-3 weeks earlier, with 1 or 2 occasionally up to a month earlier.

I had to postpone going to a couple homes to teach because of the deaths, which are not coming down fast enough. Another month will really tell the story. Either things drop by the end of July or there is absolute proof that reopening so soon failed (which I believe is at least partially correct.)

AdriaDjocovid irresponsible. They had already relaxed the entourage size and hotel site perimeter thanks to bellyaching from Number One, who then embarrassed the sport with his denial motivated lackadaisical approach to sensible behavior.

I usually don’t wish for anyone’s failure at legal enterprise but I’m really hoping USTA winds up with egg on their face and the whole thing gets scrapped before anyone gets the walrus and fuques up their life beyond repair.

There is an explosion of infection in FL among young people. Two 17 year old kids died recently, so the myth that young people are immune to this has been busted again. I hope the USO can go forward somehow, but I fear it is an impossibility.

We won’t know the real numbers for two years. How many of the people who died and were tested positive for COVID-19 would have died from pneumonia, the flu, diabetic keto acidosis, renal failure, or other diseases? 3 million people died in 2017 in the United States. We have to wait and compare the total deaths in 2020 to the last 4 years. We need to compare pneumonia deaths to the prior years. Obviously Coronavirus is killing some people who were healthy, but a significant portion of the 127,000 (not 120 million as some people think) may have died anyway.
the northeast of the country has had it bad for many reasons. the biggest is being first. we had states bidding up prices on scarce items that could easily have been made available if our federal leadership listened to experts or simply watched the dreaded media in january and saw what was clearly coming. nj is the most densely populated state.. ny has nyc and draws commuters and visitors from nearby states on a disney type level everyday- and the virus spread quickly and easily while the president lied and confused the people. governors here did a very admirable job in spite of the president. when an accurate account is finally made in a few years it will only make this mess horribly worse than it actually is now. the initial reaction from donald was a joke and now he says that testing creates cases and that he is de-funding testing. amazing. idiot.

beyond the quarantine of incoming people from hot spots within the country.. what about international travel [players] and how about the rapid turnaround for the french? i assume that there can be no quarantine for people leaving new york going to france? otherwise playing one or the other is the only option.

The USTA is working with the NY government so if the event is still allowed to go ahead at that time I am very sure they will figure something out.

So much pessimism in this thread. Sports simply can't come back, impossible! Whatever. I am going to continue enjoying watching the impossible English Premier League (with the occasional La Liga and Serie A match) and PGA Tour golf every weekend. Probably some other sports coming up in the next few months as well. Hopefully, the ATP/WTA can join these sports in restarting safely soon.

Sweden is at 518 deaths per million. Florida is at 155 deaths per million. Interestingly, Florida has twice the population as Sweden.
Well yes, FL has twice the population, but I don't know why we are talking about that when population is already baked into the cake when you talk about deaths per million.

Also, deaths per million means nothing until this is over and we have a final count. I read something that said there is now an estimate of 180,000 dead in the US by October. OK. Maybe that's right, maybe not. Maybe it will be lower. But that will be around 544 deaths per million, and we will be right up there with the worst disasters in the world. As for FL, 155 is now, when that number is growing daily, and that's for the whole state. Broward is already close to 200.

New York had terrible leadership during Coronavirus. Nursing homes were abandoned and subways remained opened. Florida had a different approach which had targeted lockdowns of nursing homes and used the national guard to effectively test and sanitize them. Florida residents were given more freedom to take their personal risk factors into account and make the best decisions for themselves and their families.

New York will be the worst state, at 1613 deaths per million, until it is overtaken. Florida is at 155 deaths per million. I shouldn’t lie. New Jersey just overtook New York and has 1693 deaths per million. Connecticut is at 1206. It’s ridiculous to claim these states were effectively managed when they have many more deaths per capita compared to Florida. Florida even has the bigger population. Bad leadership by the governors of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut will not disappear because a state has an uptick in cases during 1 week.

How can you compare a big city like NYC where people jam into subways, live next to each other, etc. to any other place in America? It's set up perfectly for a pandemic to spread. They totally locked down and it took a while. To manage to crush the curve in a place like NYC took strong leadership and an incredible effort by the people to respect others and wear masks and constantly be told of a threat. It's the only way to approach a virus - wear a mask or stay home. Many states leadership has been lacking, just like the WH administration. Florida has even stopped reporting the amount of new cases. For other states to not learn what to do after months of having people stay home is such a big failure. Packed beaches got Florida in trouble - the unexpected circumstances in the very beginning got NYC in trouble. To still have record setting numbers of cases in the US at this point when we had so many other countries to learn from is scary. Florida, CA, Texas, Arizona also had NY and countries in Europe to learn from. Oh yeah, don't get me started on the pandemic team that was let go by the White House 2 years ago and the detailed document that was worked on in a bipartisan way when Obama was in office - it's 69 pages and I read it. It's easy to find if you Google it. It had everything you needed to know about a pandemic. If it was followed, the deaths would have been astronomically cut. My point is if we had any type of leadership our curve would be smashed- instead it is stronger than ever after three months. I severely doubt a US Open will happen. I'm more optimistic about the French because it isn't in the US. We may soon be blocked from traveling to Europe because of how badly the virus has been handled here (they are considering it). Also, it should tell you something that NY, CT, and NJ won't allow people in state from Florida and similar states that are spiking unless they quarantine for 14 days. That illustrates where we are now better than anything.

Maybe they should go straight to the finals. Nadal vs Thiem

Not sure Rafa plays this one given how brutal the schedule is. I could honestly see him giving serious consideration to sitting out the entire North American hardcourt portion and focusing on the European clay. Especially when he's saying that he wasn't able to practice/play for several months and only recently started practicing again, but only doing like an hour or so sessions.
