Sloane Stephens: out of shape and underachieving

She is married to one of the most embarrassing football players of all time in terms of career and the position he had.
Not really, I know it's very fashionable for Europeans to rip American football players and gleefully talk about how terrible they are, but he's about average over here. Also in February you stated that you didn't even who he was, and now you're an expert on where he stands in history ?

That’s not true it’s fashionable to diss American soccer players. We love when Americans can play football.
Born in England but American citizen. Gets mentioned all the time and talked about in Euro sports media. That he is American makes it extra cool. He is awesome and already setting records for his age. One of the most interesting players today. No one is dissing him. He is set to play huge teams when he gets a little older. Sloanes husband though is something entirely different. Sloane is way more successful than her husband.

edit... saw you edited your post.
If sloanes husband was a great football player I would have known about him before February.

I really enjoy watching her. She has such smooth strokes, imo, makes it look effortless. Some of her tennis at 2018 Roland Garros was wonderful.
She looks really happy though. Maybe for her, she has achieved enough.

Couldn't agree more. Generalizing here, but most of the top athletes in any sport are absolute psychos. It already takes so much effort to become a consistent professional in any sport, but the dedication, drive and determination to be a Djokovic or Serena hurts my brain to even think about.

If you're not in the running for the greatest of all time or able to break records, it would be hard not to start coasting once you've won a slam and become a multi millionaire. Train enough to stay competitive but don't go crazy over it. Go out there and have some fun. Someone like Sloane has nothing to prove anymore. Worst case scenario is retiring as a "one-slam wonder," a pejorative that 99% of all players who ever picked up a racket would kill to be known as.

Right, but don't you think it's a little overboard to say he's one of the most embarrassing football players in history ? I mean he played in the World Cup and in the Premier League, do you know how many professional football players never accomplish those things ? I never said he was a great player.

Sloane is in trouble. Currently #37 in the world, she has clay points to defend. If those points drop off without anything to replace them, she is starting to get into qualie range. So in a way, this pause in play may have benefited her, at least she has more time to get her game back on track. But she has done little in 2020, 1-6 before the break, and not much in the second half of 2019, sorry to say.

She did take care of Bouchard though:

I don't think Sloane Stephens ever had or was ever regarded as having other worldly talent where she'd be racking up numerous Slams and dominating the scene. I don't think she ever had that type of drive. She wasn't that special compared to any other women on the tour. She could make a good run here and there but she wasn't ever going to be one of the dominant players on the tour. Most players are happy where they are. Like Gasquet, Monfils and them. They like to enjoy life, have fun, and spend their millions.

He was embarrassing in Premier league. He wasn’t on that level.
That he has played in World Cup doesn’t make him an amazing player.
Compared to tennis achievements I’d say he is on challenger level.

Not sure why this is so important for you.

You could argue they settled. But they clearly just tried to get to that level, then they failed because in the end they simply weren't good enough, then they stopped beating themselves up over losing time and time again. So many of these guys portrayed as wasted talents just weren't as talented as people thought they were and then it's just easier to blame the players instead of reevaluating if they were that special to begin with.

When you have a leaderless tour full of players, who cannot dominate, the one has to emerge above all and win more than others...it's not like women's tour these days has multiple dominating players equivalent to big-3 or something...it has old Serena, who isn't even dominating anymore and still manages to look the most consistent even without winning multiple slams a season or even a single slam! If anything, that says a lot about sorry-butt state of women's tour than about the strength of it's players...
So all things considered why Sloane couldn't be that player??! It's not like she was getting blocked by someone like female versions of Djokovic, Federer or Nadal, so why the heck not?...
In the current state, women's tour finds itself these days i expect ANYONE at all to step up and start winning everything...if this keeps up - it's no brainer it'll inevitably happen one day! One day some player will use weakened tour to her advantage and will start winning more than others by dominating for a few seasons until next truly great player arrives and does something to her, what Federer did to Hewitt and Roddick back in the day...in fact i expect Halep to have one of those "ATG-tier" seasons when tennis resumes after COVID, if not in 2021, then maybe in 2022! She definitely more than any other player now has capabilities of pulling off a couple of multi-slam seasons back-to-back...i can totally see it happening from mile away!

sloane has an average serve, you need a serve like Osaka to be able to dominate. andreescu and osaka are the only players who are able to dominate, andreescu has more talent than sloane, so she can overcome the serve disadvantage.

Really shocking he wasnt tearing the Premier League up on a piece of shut club like Sunderland who are now in League One. :-D

You exaggerated and said it’s fashionable for Europeans to talk bad about American football players, that’s not true.
Talking about maturity, Gio Reyna who is 17 already has had a more impressive career than Sloanes husband. You have exaggerated his level and career.

I mean, she won USO, RG RU and won Miami wasn't it? Those are better achievements than most who enter professional tennis.
Could she have achieved more? Probably. Could she still achieve more? I'm not sure - maybe a few more decent wins but tournaments wise I'm doubtful that she could win even a premier event. Having said that, more shocking things have happened in sport, so she could have a resurgence. The vibe I do get from her is that if she has say another 2 years of bad form on tour I think she'll hang the racket up as she seems to have other commitments such as her foundation as well as her family and partner of course.
I will just say though that all players have a 'peak' in their form, and peak Stephens wasn't as bad player at all - in fact I enjoyed watching her and her groundies were actually beautiful when she was in the zone.

Sloane Stephens seems to have been around for ever. And her career is consistent in her inconsistency. She is not alone in this.
As such, l wouldn't write her off nor would I expect her to win major titles.
You can change the above by substituting Stephens for Keys, and a host of others.

Aside from being 15 pounds overweight, her game has not evolved at all. She often looks slow and listless on the court. No evidence of any stroke improvement and her results over the last 2 2/3 years have mostly been terrible. She was supposed to be a top 3-5 player consistently. After thrashing Keys in the 2017 US Open final, it looked like she was gonna take off.

Instead, she often plays error prone, sloppy tennis with lazy footwork. Whoever is coaching her has done a terrible job. She should be in her prime and having gotten better. Instead, she has regressed and throwing away her potential. She also seems a bit in love with promoting herself in photos and such, kind of like Bouchard and Svitolina. She appears mentally lazy and lacking the will to win. Ridiculous actually.

It’s her life but she’ll regret her lack of focus one day when she looks back.

She looks fatter and even her face looks different. Her eyes have lost the brightness they used to have before.

I think she is engaged now? Maybe her mind is elsewhere?

Yeah it's really unfortunate, I think she is just happy to win one slam and call it a good career.

Her net worth is $4 million and she has a Slam. Perhaps she is thinking of quitting.

Or CV blues might be the reason. She might bounce back soon.

Apparently you don't spend much time on football forums, but whatever, your statement that Reyna has "already has had a more impressive career" than Altidore is so ridiculous I don't know how to respond. He may have more potential and in the long run will have a better career, but as of right now he has zero starts with the USMNT and Altidore has 100, second only to Landon Donovan. He had a hat trick against Bosnia in 2013 (yes three goals against a European team oh no !). Makes me wonder why you really are hating on this guy so much.

I hadn’t seen my next door neighbor in 3 months during the lockdown until she emerged this week when I passed her in the elevator. I almost didn’t recognize her as she had gained so much weight. CV blues might be the reason.

Odd, only one person I know gained weight in the past 4 months. She had twins a month ago

I spend zero amount on football forums. I have a life and not time for any other forum or social media actions besides this one, fortunately :giggle:

Im not hating the guy so much. Hate is a very strong word. You have some judgements that makes you jump to conclusions very fast. (Similar time “Europeans don’t likeAmerican football players which was also not true.)

I’ve said this in the past about Sloane, I feel she likes the celebrity aspect of being a tennis player but she does not like the commitment/professionalism it takes to be a top tennis player.
